The Patterson House, owned by the
P. C K. K. Co., and kept by John Hays, a
most clever landlord, was profusely decora

the opening of the Centennial Exhibition.

partook of the flag decorating spirit that
prevailed to almost an unlimited extent in

Last Friday Cornelius Carter was caught
in the act of setting fire to lumber in Wil
liamsport. A desperate fight took place
with him bef ore he was captured in which
he only was injured. WilUanixport papers
say he is a crazy man. It is a question it
every man who fires f roperty iutent!onaUy,
as he did, is in his right mind. There is,
theref ore, the greater need to imprison such
people, not so much as a punishment for
their deviltry or insanity, but as a protcc-
tion to society generally, from their de
structive propensities. If a man is a de
mon, or is insane, imprison him.

Editor or Sentinel axd Refcbli-
cas Sir: In accordance with the
suggestion in your late paper. I have
considered that which seemed to be
everybody's, is nobody's business, and
yet it may be anybody's business,
hence, permit me to assume to call a
meeting at Mifflintown, on Tuesday,
the 30th day of May. at 10 o'clock,
A. when I will meet any and all
ancient citizens of Juniata county of
fifty years and upwards of age, with
a view of organizing to gather statis
tics of which to make History
for our children and their successors,
and when another Century has passed
away this bit of History of little
Juniata county vrfll be sought after
with avidity. I trust that there may
be a goodly nnmber there and that
we may be allowed the use of the
Court House to organize the meeting
in. Will yon be so kind as to give
this an insertion in your paper, and
also send it to the other papers of
Miffiintown pressso that it may give
the most general notice:

Last Sunday Rev. Mr. Sherrard,
after reading tbe 2ud chapter of the
Song of Solomon took, for tbe text of
tbe coiucunion service sermon the 10th
verse of tbe chapter mentioned'. Tbe
text reads
My beloved spake, and said unto me,
Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come
away."
A pleasant, instructive introductory
followed the reading of tbe Wit, which
gave tbe estimate of tbe true spiritual
love for Christ, breathed in the Song of
Solomon, as placed on it by tbe most
eminent divines. Tbe text may become
tbe source of tbe most exalted spiritual
joy. it should not oe read literally,
but taken m an allegorical sense, as it
was intended it should be by the au
thor. Tbe them deduced front the song,
and the text thereon, was or it, "Tbe
mutual love of Christ and Lis church,"
Which tbe Reverend speaker aua
iixed and preached from under tbe fol
lowing divisions and sub divisions :
I. Tbe mutual relations between
. brist and the Believer is love.
1. The character of Christ's love.
2. Christ's lore cherishes us.
8. The promises of Christ's lor.
To establish a mutuality between
( brist and the believer there must be
on tbe part of tbe latter
1. The Believer's love.
2. The Beiicver's love is sure that he con
fides, a
2. The Believer's love is manifest in that
he loves. '
II. The toanifestion of Christ's love,
which is found
1. That Christ's love is considerate.
2. Christ's love is demonstrative.
8. Christ's lore overlooks iinperfectk ns.
HI. The privileges of Christ's love.
Tbe privileges of Christ's love are
glorious
1. By the privileges of Christ's love the
Believer is called away from sin.
2. By the privileges of Christ's love the
Believer is called to Holiness.
3. By the privileges of Christ's love the
Believer is called into Glory.
Farmers, if you want a Mower and
Reaper, buv the New Raritan. It bas
been before tbe public for the past four
years, and recommends itself to farmers
with tbat degree of confidence which a
sever test alone can give. From the
start it bas net with tbe bearty appro
val and well-merited praise of every
practical farmer, and in localities where
it ii known it is acknowledged to be
tbe standard machine. It combines
more valuable features and will better
meet tbe wants of tbe farmer than any
other machine in use. The utmost care
is used in its construction, and it is
made of the best material and in tbe
most thorough manner. This machine
can be bought from J. F. Jacobs, near
Port Royal, cLeaper than from any
other parties.
If you need a Mower, buy the Screw
Mower from J. F. Jacobs. It bas not
got a single cog-wheel or a single extra
shaft or unnecessary piece.
The language of visiting cards is,
according to one wbo claims to know, as
follows : To turn down the upper left
band corner denotes " visile," and is
used for an ordinary call ; the upper
right band comer turned down means
"felicitation," end it a visit of eongra
ulations; the lower left band corner,
"conge," represent a farewell rail,
and tbe lower right corner, " condo
lence," expresses a desire to sympa
thize with bereavement. Tbe rule most
generally understood is tbe turning of
one end of tbe eaid, which denotes a
wish to see tbe ladies of tbe family.
