The attendance on the services held in
the Presbyterian and Lutheran churches
last week were larger than is usually the
case during the Week .if Prayer.
There was a tire west i' this place on
Tuesday evening. From the appearance of
the light some people conjectured it to be
in Mifflin county, others conjectured it to
be in Licking Creek valley, this county.
Two men named Williams and Maxwell
were arrested in llarmburg, last week, as
the parties who robbtd the store of badore
Schwartx in Newport, Perry county, some
time since. The men were sent to jail,
where they will remain till the May teira of
court.
The mild weather last week enabled farm
ers who desired to do so to plough fields
lut euro planting. This jp not the only lat
itude in which such mild weather prevailed.
Canada was also visited by the spring-like
weather, and farmers there like here have
vailed themselves of it, and ploughed
flelds tor corn.
Jt is said that people in Huntingdon coun
ty who owned sugar-maple trees tapped
them last week and made sugar and molas
ses. Another remarkable piece of Intelli
gence from the same county is that a hive
of bem belonging to William Weaver, of
Hopewell township, swarmed oa last New
Year's day.
In the western part of this State, recent
ly a couple were warned by telegraph, that
is, the minister conducted the ceremony
from a telegraph office miles aay trom tbe
parlor in which the young people stood to
join hands. It is pronounced as thoroughly
lone as if bride and groom had stood f ace
to face to tbe preacher.
Perhaps it is well enough to reflect over
