O 1 . . and edifying sermon from the book of Job, 19th chapter and 25th verse. The text reads : " F,"r I kuow that my Redeemer livcth. and that he shall stand at the latter day unuii the earth. " - The introductory was opened by the statement that the text may be denomi nated Job's creed, or confession of faith, and is oue of tbe most thrilling, soul-in?pinng ever uttered in this world.' Many in these days affect to bare no creed. Tbey can tell what they do not believe, but they cannot tell what they do believe. It was not so with Job. Men sometimes experience difficulty in formulating a creed when called to do so. Notably was that the case when tho ecclesiastical body met to formulate what is known as the Westminster Con fession. Tho learned divines who con stituted that body were sorely pressed for language to express the qualities or attributes of God. The time appoint ed by the Assembly for that particular duty came and passed by without any result. Tbe Assembly adjourned, and met again with a deeper perplexity than before. The way seemed dark and long, with uo visible end. A member who bad been in eanrert secret prayer to God for guidance In the work, was called on to pray. Ilis response re moved the trouble, for bis expression was so to the .question that bad per plexed the Assembly, that it was at once accepted as all that was required. It was God's Spirit that guided the mind of that divine and gave him lan guage that was acceptable to all others. So tt wis with Job. It was God's ."I trit bearine testinionv with bis snirit that caused him to exclaim in the lan guge of tho text, " I know that my Redeemer liveth." The introductory was itself a jewel, and a most fitting prelude to the ser mon proper, which our space admits to the briefest notice only. I. Tue kact of Job's knowledge. What led that God-fearirg and God- Icviug man to so positive a declaration ? All the circumstances, when viewed from a human stand point, were calcu lated to unsettle a mind as to a favora ble termination of tbe troubles that surrounded Job, and inspire with infi delity. What was it that maintained bim It was 1st. The Spirit of God. It was the Spirit of ibe Creator of all the uni verse and the gteat Judge of earth that upheld Job. The things of time and sense were as nothing to render sat isfaction when compared to the Fpirit. Its ccuiniuoiou with bis spirit was the fad of his kncnfltdge. It was 2nd. Ilis vfferinr. Job's suffering was of the rti 8' excruciating character. He suffered in body, of disease, in j mind, for the loss of friends, for the loss of property, for the loss of every-1 thing that the world in lis worship of itself esteems worth having. Astute men of the world bad believed bim a righteous man, and why be bad been thus stricken in personal health, in fam ily, in property, they could not under stand. Job himself could not reason to a conclusion why be was thus unfor tunate. Be felt that the "hand of God bad touched Lira" in a way that pnt him in a most unfavorable light before his fe!low-men ; but, having tone no thing without first asking the sanctiou of the Spirit, an abiding faith, that was more consoling than tho possession of health, worldly frieuds, or property, was always with bim, and bore bim np when natural despondency would have crushed bim. Knowing that be had pursued the right as be be understood it, by daily recourse to prayer, and throusrh it communed with God's Spirit, he felt no guilt, more than the natural guiit that attends all men, and be real ized that be was in the bands of Goc, and that all bis suffering was to attend some wise purpose of Providence which was veiled froia Lura&n eye, and which human wisdom couiJ not comprehend, and under the strongest tests, such as caused the1 earth to appear like a "whited sepulchre," he exclaimed, " I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.' II. Th b object of Job's kxowl F.P;e. Job bad an object in the knowl edge that be was daily, and doubtless hourly, acquiring and strengthening by spiritual communion, and physical suf fering. It was 1st. -f prtsml Sartor. People of the world who believe they have a com petence or fund laid away, or secured tor the day in which they no longer can labor for their own maintenance oftimes express a satisfaction with their condi tion ; but that was not the object which Job sought. He was "content and righteous when property and worldly competence seemed firmly secured to him, but when it was all swept away, be was content and righteous as before. Prosperity was well enough if it came through honest labor or effort, but there was more consolation to Job when in communion with tbe Spirit of tbe Judge of all the esrth, than in acquiring property, goods or merchandise of this world. There is no saving virtue in them. His chief object waa knowl edge of G od'a Spirit. There is a saving virtue in it. It is an erer present Sa vior. 2nd Job"t dyed vas to secure a fu turt Judge. The world had misjudged him. From its contracted and limited opinion be wiVhcd to appeal, and be tried before a higher tribunal. Ilis object was to atand before tbe Creator of the universe and J ndge of earth, a justified being. Before that object all earthly objects and opinions 6ank into , aaar oaoD&i& morning Ker. Mr. Sherrard preached a highly interesting insignificance. Physical Itifirmity, loss of property, everything earthly waa nothing to him, in comparison to the obtainment of an approving opinion of that great Judge. It was the con sciousness of receiving this, which maintained Job. It is that conscious ness which maintains every good man in adversity. AH should endeavor to reach the stabs of spiritual excellence thit J ob attained, and with him be able to exclaim, 1 know that my Redeemer liveth, and that be Shall stand at the latter day npon the eaith." The friends of liberal education will be glad to know that the fire of April 2Slh, which destroyed the Boarding House of Tnscarora Academy, did not serionslylrffet iU school duties. The Principal has been connected wiib the Institutioa ten rears, his varied expe rience in the management of boys is surely worth something, he is assisted by compe tent teachers. The abductors of Charlie Koss are dead, as is well known. A third party, Wester velt, was convicted in Philadelphia on Mon day, for conspiracy to keep Mosher and Dougass out of the way of the poico. At this writing his sentence has not been de livered. And thus three active participants have been disposed of. But where is the boy t The projectors of the Gettysburg excursion take this methid of thanking their friends and fcllow-excursiouists, for the liberal patronage and good humor, as well as their good behavior, which won for them tbe declaration from the railroad companies "tbat they were tbe most crdtrly excursion party that bad ever passed over their roads, consider, ing size."
