Tbe borse behaved admirably, lie

Miss Consignee Fimuvre Woliten
writes io tbe Cleveland Herald: u
can tell i Southern girl at once. She
is rounder than ber Northern sister ;
indeed, she is never thin or lank, she
walks with a languid step, a id all her
movement are alow and indolent; cue
is never alertl She bas fine soft eves
with a seiene expression, very different
from tbe quick, keen eyes of the North ;
she bas not the beautiful red and white '
complexion of New York and New
England, rather is she sallow, with a
few rose tints ; you might ball cream
color. She nevei looks anxious, no
matter what happen! ; the does not
think she can help matters by ber ad
vice or interference, but sits bsck calmly
and leaVes everything to brother" cr
"pa," pt'dnouneiog tbe latter word in a
way I defy a Northern girl to imitate.
Tbe word might be used as a shibboleth )
it ts not exactly "pay," but balf Wsy
between tbat and tbe sound of in
"eat." Our Southern girl dresses pic
turesquely rather than trimly, and bas
brighter eolors and more floating ends
and curls about her than a Northera
belle allows. She bits pretty plnmp
hahds, but she is not particular about
the gloves that Cover them I mean
particular compared with Fifth avenue
rules. In short, tha is a more volumi
nous sort of a girl in every way, and
cares less about "the fashion." She
has oue decided advantage Over the
Northern girls, however, and that is
ber voice ; it is sweeter and lover, a
little trainante, perhaps, but es.entially
gebtle and womanly.
Miss Wolsten's article on tbe South
ern girls ha brought out the followlbg
rejoinder by a Tennessee girl : Tlld
we are told tl at if tbe Southern girl
has not the rcsy check of her New
Eoglan J sister, she can boast of a noble
and graceful form and a warm and gen
erous beart, what her diminutive North
ern sister cannot do, as they afe gov.
erned by the cold Climate in which they
are raised ; and as for the accent of tbe
Southern girl, it would bo impossible
for a New England girl to imitate a
Southern girl, for she always talks as
if ber mouth was full of hot niu?h. As
for dress and taste, tbe Northern girls
can never compare with their Southern
sisters in style and grace. Nor dues
tbeSoutherb girl want to make speeches ;
nor does she waht to go to the trsr and
expound tbe law ; nor to the pulpit and
preach the Gospel. She wants to re
main at lioiiie and make that a heaven
for her father or brother or husband
She does not court tbe Northern fill's
opinion. Not a bit of it !
