Smith, and which he is repairing. Mr.
Smith himself was eog.iged at work st the
toruice when the "queer things" were
found. Thir finding was soon noised, and
Ipeedily sped along Main Street, among tbe
jeo;le. A wise and iiiligluahve man
thought tfiey were Indian relics, another
coiijecturrd that they were of Celtic origin,
and so tbe conjectures of tbe parties ran
far and wide over two continents, until one
of the party broke piece otf one cf the
curiosities, aud discovered that it was made
of l'i.ister of Paris, and that bioke the
charm that until tbeu influenced all who
ew them, for it immediately became clear
t all that they were wax figure moulds and
not relics of some del uLct race of people.
Mr. Ilummell, to dcipoustratc to the entire
satisf action of all, took a piece into his tin
shop, and theie melted lead and poured it
into one ; t'rs result waa the figure of a
sheep and lamb. There was a cucumber
mould, oue for a radish, one for an apple, a
pear and others.
On scientific subjects there is cer
tainly uo better authority in this coun
try tbaa tbe Scientific .Im'ricin. The
following hints Iroiu it should therefore
receive tome atUtitiou : "If mosquitoes
or other bloodsuckers infest our sleep
ing looms at nigjt, wa uucork a bottle
of tbe oil of pennyroyal, and these in
sects leave ill great baste, nor will they
return ho long as tbe air in the roin is
loaded with the fumes of that aromatic
herb. If rats enter the cellar, a little
powdered potash, thrown into their
bole.", or mixed with meal and scattered
in their ruaaways, never fails to drive
theui awaj. Cayenne -ptr will keep
the buttery and store-room free frooi
ants and cockroaches. If a mouse
makes a entrance into any part of your
dwelling saturate a rag with cayenne in
eolutioD, and stuff it into the hole,
which can then be repaired with either
wood or mortar. No rat or mouse will
eat the rag for the purpose of opening
communication with a depot of ahp
plica." We were among the crowd of curious
observers of two seta of shields for vil
lainous depredators, to the Express ear
attached to tbe Sunday evening Atlau
tio train. They were the masks and
breastplates used bv the men who at
tempted to rob the Express car on the
Vaudalta railroad, ia Illinois, on tbe
8th of J uly last. Tbey were of heavy
steel plate, and so eooKtrnctcd as to
make them impervious to the force of
any bullet, as the test marks which tbey
bore proved. Tbe villains who wore
tacni were evidently prepared to fact
Sanger, as no provision had been made
for defence from au attack id the rear ;
and barinf successfully drawn t-a Ere
of tbe ' express mesaetigef, theii way
was expected to be clear to the coveted
booty. These artules were evidently
tninrtfaciured to order, and we r-elteve
bore tbe maik of the nuker ; so that
tbe oljsct in taking them to Xew Tork
may moan srnrethicg far more signifi

relics cf a desperate adventure. A

last oae more kiss), my darling,
Before I say, Adia ;
sst one mora, kits, I pray yd a,
To seal my love to yon.
Let me clasp you hand more closely,
That hand so soft and white ;
Let me see one smile of promise
Before I say "Good night"
Let me see those eyes so beauteous.
Once more upon me rest ;
Let me bear one word of comfort
From the lips I oft have blest,
Oh, how am I to leave thee.
More dear to me than life i
flow can I be without thee
In the world's broad held of str!fe I
I leave thee, yes, 1 leave thte,
I leave thee in God's care;
Slay thy guardian angel keep thee,
When I no mere am here.
Then one more kiss, my darling.
Before we two must part ;
J ust one more kiss, I pray yon.
And with it take my heart.

Corn will be reasonably good if frosts

very promising. There is a larger

CARD FROM TH0S. MORROW, Esq.
Kisr Watisjoiid, Aog. 11, 1875.
B. F. Sckwtur s Dear Sir, Permit me to
file some objections previous to accepting
the nomination for County Commissioner.
1st. I would require the removal of the
loouty Peat, either to McCoysvMle or
BealetoWa, including the new Coarf House.
2nd. I consider I have been on the track
Idng chough, suffering glorious defeats for
non-paying offices, for the sake of the pary .
Snl I notice a number of good niei'i
Sanies announced for the office, having age
on their side, which, according to the course
of nature, ought to win, and will do better
than I, perhaps, on a long heat. 4th. I have
put the harness on for the coming cam
paign, and desire no disarrangement in
changing them.
With my sincere desire for the success of
tbe party to render the most good to the
most people, which I sincerely hope and
pray, I am oae of that chosen number.
I remain very respectfully,
Ti MORROW.
