As we are frequently aked, or written to concerning the duties of said officers, we publish the law of 1874, the latest enactment on tbe eubject : SEcrrotf I. Be it enacted, &-c , That the auditors of the several townships aud boroughs within tbe couiiuonvealtli shall meet auuually ou the first Mon day of J nre, and oftener,' tf necessary, ani shall audit, settle aud adjust tbe accounts of tbe supervisors, road com missioners, school, borough and town ship treasurers; as may by law be re ferred to them. Sec. 2. That be auditors of the several townships aud boroughs within this commonwealth are hereby author ized aud required to publish by posting handbills, tttber printed or written, 111 at least five publii pieces within their respective townships and boroughs, an itemized annual statement of tbe re ceipts and expenditures of the borongh councils, road commissioners, supervi sors, overseers of tbe poor and school directors for the year preceding the annual settlemeut for their feipeclive district ; said handbills to be posted within ten days after such settlement ; aud further, it shall bo the duty of said auditors to file a copy of tbe same with ths township clerk in their respective districts, and also with the clerk of the court of quarter sessions, which shall be at all times subject to inspection by auy citizen thereof: Provided, That where any two tf said vfiices shall be excercised by tbe same persons only one statement sLall be required ; JJlso provided, Tut nothing in this act shall be construed to interfere with tbe pres ent law which requires annual state ments of tbe receipts and expenditures of tbe borongh eonncils, commissioners, supervisors, overseers of the poor and ttchool d:rectors to be advertised in the daily and weekly newspapers published in the respective localities. Sec. 3. lit case of neglect or re fusal to comply with the provisions of this act, the auditors so neglecting or refusing shall pay a penalty of twenty dollars, to be recovered in the same manner as debts of similar amounts are by law recoverable, by suit instituted in tbe name of the school district upon tbe complaint of any lax-pay iog citi zen of tbe same, and the proceeds thereof to be paid into the sciool trea sury of said district.
