Shindel.M TlIK Ilarri'burg Telegraph of the Ct'a inst. relates the following : Yebter day aiottn'og Sheriff Sheafer, accom panied by Deputy Sheriff Westbrook, left this city on the 8:10 train of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad for Philadelphia, having in charge William Kond, Harry Smithson and 4. H. Mar tin, the hotel thieves, sentenced to six years' imprisonment iu the Eastern Penitentiary. When the prisoners were takec on the cars the sheriff dis covered that tbe wife -and child of Suiitbsou were on the same car, and out of sympathy that official permitted Smithson to sit beside her without be ing baudcufted. Bond and Martin were handouffed together. Everything went well until the train crossed the Schuylkill at Fairmount Park, when the sheriff notified the pris oners that the ttain would stop shortly at the foot of Coates street. Smithson then got up and said "Well, we are near the place. I guess I will leave)" and deliberately started for the front of tbe car. Tbe sheriff sprang after him, but he gained tbe door and leaped from tbe ear. The sheriff followed, and in jump ing fell, mashing tbe little finger of bis left band and otherwise injuring him self considerably. The convict rcn across tbe track and, pat-sing under some empty freight cars on the other track, continued his flight down the steep bill on to the Schuyl kill. The Sheriff followed him rapid ly, and when within twenty yards gave him notice to stop or be wonld fire. Smithson obeyed the order and was re taken. Deputy Sheriff Westbrook, noticiog Smithson raoning out, ran to tbe rear door of the ear, got on the steps and fired at bim. Upon ascertaining that the sheriff bad jimped off be ran back into tbe car to look after tbe other two, bat they in tbe meantime bad reached to tbe front door and. leaped off. Westbrook then proceeded to the nearest station house, gave tbe alarm and secured a squad of officers and started for the park. Martin and Bond, after ruoniog around tbe psrk tome time, ht into a park station bouse to borrow an axe to meud their wagon (u e. take off tbe cuns). Tbe telegraph having been to work tbit station bad tbe necessary in forma- j tion ft few minutes before they arrived there, and they were held Until tracked by Deputy Sheriff Westbrook and tbe officers, in the snow, to that place. It was discovered that Martin bad in bis possession an excellent revolver all ready and loaded for action. How he obtained it remain to bo ascertained. Tbe entire party having been secured were safely conveyed to tbe peniten tiary and turned over to the care of the officers of that iostitatioa: -"TT.
