As a chiid about ten years of age,
daughter of James Harnett, in Fayette

a window the other day, she accident-

held 'be sash. The sash fell on ber
neck, breaking it and suspending her in
that position. She was not found until
several bwtirs after the occurrence. Two
children have been drowned and one
smothered of the same family. The
mother is now hopelessly insane.

One day last week the daughter of
Mr. J oseph Y. Snook, of Sugar Valley,
was cut gathering whortleberries with
a arty of girls, when a blacksnake ran
up her clothes and coiled twice around
her lwer body net to the skin. The
excitement was intense among the party,
but the young girl in the embrace of
the suake was the coolest of them all.
She Commenced to tear off her clothing,
and by the time they were mostly eff,
the reptile had been killed and was

A most singular occurrence at Al
toona, in a church is thus described in
a brief letter to the Lewistowo Sentinel,
under date of the 18th iust. : Elder J.
A. lludkius, of Lewistown, preached
in the colored cburcb here on Sunday
night last. His subject was the Value
, of the Soul of Man. In the midgt of
the discourse a Iarire black man, by the
'
uamc of Lutuer l'enJ' arose fr"m tis
8eit outstretched arms, teariug his
hair and crying at the top of bis voice,
"My God ! my God !" and fell on the
flocr as if dead. Two-tbirds of the

Mr. Pamuel Strock, residing at
Cashtown, Hamilton township, Frank
lin county, ended his life by hanging
himself to a girder in bis stable on Fri
day moroi.ig last. It appears that be
was greatly annoyed about a suit in
court with one of bis neighbors. On
the day before, the case was tried and
decided against biiu the verdict of the
jury throwing biui into the costs of
protably fifty dollars. Returning heme
in the eveuing he remarked to bis
daughter that this was bis fint suit in
court aud it would be bis last," but the
apparent careless manner in which it
was expressed, excited no suspicion on
the part of the household. On Friday
morning, about half-past six o'clock, he
left the bouse to attend to the feeding
of bis stock. He wis called to break
fast, but not appearing, Mrs. Sirock
went to ihe stable aud found biin hang
ing to the girder. Greatly alarmed,
she called in several of the neighbors
who cut 1 i in down and sent word of the
occurrence to Enquire Davison, of this
place, who empanneled a jury, pro
ceeded thither and held an inquest on
the body, rendering verdict in accord
ance with the above facts. Mr. S. was
agd about 70 years. Chambersburg

CONGRESS.
Mr. Editor :
As the time is approaching for Domina
ting a ticket to be supported by the Re
publican party this fall, and as ocr system
of making nomination requires announce
ments to be made at least four weeks before
the Convention, and one of the most im
portant offices to be filled is that of Con
gress, I would, therefore, recommend to
the Republican voters of Juniata county,
Jeremiah Lyons, Esq., as a suitable candi
date, to be voted for at the Primary Elec
tion lor Congress. He is well qualified, is
a man of untiring teal, and a thorough Re
publican, and if succerful in making the
district nomination, would pare uo efforts
to make his election, and I believe would
be elected.
PATTERSON.
CONGRESS.
To the Republican of Juniata county i
Permit me to suggest the name of Jamts
lrvrtn, of Tuscurora township, as a suitable
candidate for Congress in this district. Mr.
Irwin is and always was a steadfast Repub
lican. He is a youn; man of fine business
and intellectual acquirements, and if elect
ed would represent our district with honor
to himself and credit to his constituents.
If nominated he will poll a larger vote in
Jnniata county than any other one who has
been a candidate lor this otlice for many
years. SPRUCE UILL.
CONGRES37
Mr. Editor : The time approaches when
the announcement of candidates, accord
ing to the usages of our party, must be
closed. Permit me to announce the name
of Dr. J. P. Sterrett, as the choice of this
county for Congress. The District is a new
one, and with the selevtiou of a strong can
didate, it may be our honor to secure the
Congressional nomination.

LEGISLATURE.
Editor Sentinel ; Permit me to Game
Reuben Caveny, Esq , of Fayette township,
as a suitable candidate for the Legislature.
Mr. Caveny is a well known citiz-n of un
impeachable character and ur doubted abil
ities. He has long been one of the closest
observers of political affairs, and would
make an intelligent and useful member. lie
resides, too, in the strongest Republican
district of the county, and would command
a large vote. Many Republicans unite in
urging his nomination.
DELAWARE..
LEGISLATURE.
Editor Jnniata Sentinel and Republican :
Permit me to present the name of George
M. Smtlker, of Tuscarora township, as a
suitable candidate ior Legislature. Mr.
Smelker is one of our best Republicans,
and as a citizen stands at the head of our
best men, aud I believe if nominated at our
Primary Election, all our best citizens
would support him, and elect him to that
honorable position, which he would till with
credit to himself and houor to the citizens
