HON . , C. L. I. muruirox.—We' received a hurried visit on Saturday front Hon. Chas. L. Lamberton, of Lucerne county, who was on the way for a -visit to his old home in Clarion, and could not resist the temptation to stop over for a I'm hours in our city. Mr. L . formerly represented the Clarion district in the State Senate. where he obtained the reputatimi of b.dng one of the ablest mem- C . IN of that body. His caustic speeches in reply to Senator Lowry on several occasions, which Were republished in the Observer at the time, have made his unale Millibar to the Democrats of Erie .county, and to all who met him he seethed like an old acquaintance. Mr. Lambertoa is now a resident of Wilkes where he has alreaity 'won a leading position as a lawyer and pultlic man A Nsyrnsrlanv 1.011,1ay is hearing took place before F. F. HORACE GREELEY IN ERIE.—III Homed' Greeley's personal renunisejnces, he states that hia first visit to Erie county was about January Ist, 1831. Ills father hail pre'vious ly located in Wayne township, and Horace walked liome from GOwanda, Caltarakigna eonnty, where he had been, working a's a journeyman printer at till pei month. He remained about a month, during which he was engaged at cutting wood and making himself, generally useful, when he concluded that the life of_ a pioneer was not his "forte," and struck out for Erie to secure employ ment at his-trade. Who' knows. but that if he had remained he might have attained to the honor of a respectable termer, and served country in the responsible offices of Justice of the Peace, County Auditor, -Ass°. clate Judge, or. it might be, have risen to•the dignity of a Pennsylvania Legislator, instead of remaining a mere editor all his, life Ile was fortunate in Finding - sotrk• at the ( iaieltc one, then owned hr ‘!: erica. at $l5 per month, tlo mos , t:,a!, he had ever made, 'where he remained loriha mwohs, boarding ita Air. Sterrett's family. Aitt , ough Horace was a mere youth t wen! v, hi, writing' tab ents already, gave pt.auisc of . a hat Haiti future, and Mr. Sten ett took such a fancy to him that he was offered a 'partnership in the office, "'which," he say, "though I had ,rea sons for declining, Wfl9 none the less flatter ing as a mark of appreciation and confidence." How he finally happened to go to New FY'ork; let Horace tell in his own words: ."At length work failed at the Gaztote of flce, and I was constrained to take'a fresh de parture. No printing office in all that region wanted a journe}•man. The west seemed to be laboring under a surfeit of printers. One 'was advertised fir to fake charge of a jour nal at Wilkesbarre, Pa.,-and applied for the 'place, but failed to secure it. I would gladly have given faithful labor at the case and press through some years yet at *l5 per month and board, or even less; but it was nut tube had. Sompou full consideration, I decided to turn my steps toward the Com mercial Emporium, while still considerably younger than I would have 'preferred to he on making such a venture. Paying a parting visit-to my fitther's, under the reasonable ex pectathin that my next absence would he a 'long one, I divided with him my Erie earn ings, and with it 23 in my pocket, and t cry: little extra clothing in my bundle. I face tori•aard .New York." The career of Horace is a fresh illtistration of the way that circumstances mould men. Suppose he had accepted a partnership in the Gazette—what then? MEE PROILRTY IN DISPUTIL—A colored man, residing in Erie, is about to bring suit to re cover a large amount of property in Wash ington borough, which. it is alleged, belonged to his grandmother. The property in ques tion is located on the east side of Main street, embracing the College and Seminary build ings, and is valued at ifBoo,ooo. A lawyer of Erie visited the borough last week, and seems satisfied that the negro's title is good. Con siderable excitement exists among the present holden; of the land, who will contest the clahn warmly in case legal proceedings are instituted. We understand that the valuable coal lands belonging to Mr. Shills, of the St. Charles lintel, lie within , the disputed dis trict. The matter has not yet been hilly de veloped, but all the facts will doubtless soon be made publie.—Pith. Republic. The editor of the Crawford Demaerat, who was once a resident of Washington,stiv:3 this story is "not well dove-tailed," and that, it bears the marks of untruth upon its face. The Erie colored man is a mystery in this city We suspect that oar distinguished fel low townsman, of canalboat, fresh beef and Jloeky Mountain cat fame, Commodore Jas. Stewart, has recently been on a visit to the Pittsburgh Republic office. THE observer sail a week or two since that it had a laiger circulation in the city . ,than both the city dailies put' together.— Mil , / The Observer said no such thing. What it did say wat, that its circOtlation . in Out city is considerably - -larger than the xvliole sub scription list df the daily Republican—a statement it i 4 prepared to verify whenever called upon. People who make a practice of quarreling with everybody they have ev'er beeki associated with; "should have good memories," or they may iind themselves un comfortably tripped up when they least !wet j it G itxrr: G itowmts' INIF.Ermo.—We ask our ceaders who are interested in the success of grape culture in this vicinity to keep in mind the meeting to he heht at the Court House on the 20th inst. A number of the most prominent citizens of the county are interesting themselves in the movement, and It is 'confidently believed' that the Meeting will be one of the most interesting held here in many years. We arc in hopes of seeing a large attendance. . S6>GMENT NOTES.—The Commissioner 'of Internal Revenue has decided that a judg ment note should be stamjled at the usual rate of promissory notes, being live cents for every $lOO, or fractional part thereof, with five cents additional, on account of the'claiase "without defalcation." The Collector in this district long ago-gave a decision to the same effect, so that the rule will affect no one in rAtrinealitv Proposed Plan for Collecting the Tares. Sr. PATIIICIC: , DAIL—The day commemo rative of Ireland's patron Saint was general ly observed by our citizens of Irish descent, and the ceremonies on the ore I,lofeWertl of a very ereditable character. A prore , ,ion was figmed at the Fourth Street Cathedral, about 11 o'clock, and paraded through the principal streets. It included representatives from all the Irish religious and secular or ganizations, and must have embraced nearly a thousand participants. 'Two bands in the line, a number of handsome banners were displayed,' the badges and insignia,of the various societies looked neat and appro priate,.and all combined made one of the finest demonstration, we have had in Erie for years. In the evening the Cathedral was crowded to hear a lerture from the eloquent Father Finnucane, of Meadville, which is spoken of by those present as a remarkably . interesting effort.. The orderly manner in which our Irish citizens conducted them selves during the day is the subjert gene ral commendation . No Britow ELucTioss.—On the morning of our last issue we made special exertions to obtain correct particuilars about Lott l'y's bill to change the time tar holding local elections, and prestAned that . we had ob tained sufficiently reliable information to warrant us in stating that it would not be come a law in time to prevent the elections from being held as this spiiug. About a third of our edition had been print ed and circulated, when a telegram came saying that the bill had been signed' by the Governor anti become .a law. We immedi ately stopped the press, and removed the first notice. to -make room for the later in formation, but as some misapprehension might have ensued, we give this es:planation to account for •the difference of statement. 'By the new law, the city, township and ho rough officers will all be choseh on the (lay of the State election in October, except in one or two districts that have been empted. • TEACHERS' ENAMECATIOtiS.—The CO. Su perintendent will examine persons who wish to apply for situations as teachers in the public schools, in the following places dur ing the present month : 3fcKcan and Middleboro at Ventre school honor, March 23. • Washircrton and Edinboro at Edinboro, March 24. Franklin ,end F. fi E. Ind:, at Franklin Corners, March 25. Elk Creek And Albion at Well , burg, March 42r.. Conneaut, at :Kidder's Corners, March 20. Springfield, at East Springfield, Mardi :31. Evaminakns will commence at 10 o'clock, A. M., Each candidate should bring a pencil, paper, and, as a specimen of pen manship, a copy of the first six verses of the t 2,701 chapter of Proverbs. School Directors lre earnestly solicited to he present at the examinations. THE Legi.;lature has irts.sed the bill an- I thorizing the Phila.. S: Erie H. IL Company to extend and construct, their braiich road now located and building in the coun ties of Cameron, Elk, Clearfield and Jeffer son, to the line between the States of Penn sylvania and Ohio, and to ponnect the same with other railroads. This line commences at or near Driftwood, on the Puiladelpbia 'Erie road, mid is intended to connect with the l'ittisburgh, Fort- Wayne Chicago somewhere in the neighborhood of New Cas tle. Its.leompletion will give a new through ;. line to .New York, over which the Penn'a s Centr4C.xpects' to send most of it:, heavv - ' freight. How it will affect our city' re Rains to be seen. THE law putting off the local elections to fall meets with general denunciation from the, disintereSted citizens. of bath parties. Senator Lowry, who is looked upon as the father of the bill, comes in for his full shard of. censure. The Dispatch lets out the real object of the law when it says : "It will give the offices to the dominant party." We shall see what we bhall see, and in the meantime take occasion to remind the Republicans of a little maxim which says: "There's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip." She approached the desk: and inn voice like the sots South wind sail: 'Sir, the itrishine ha. got so badly inixikt with water that we are unable to sep :trite it." "S.tve it for Erie county wiettliCr," thundered the voice from the desk. She smiled sweetly and passed out. She bad hardly closed the door when in came an other. Japan, and the consumers here, including the American Commission House there; the halm - ter,. the Banker who furnishes the ezchan ie ; the middle men or speculators: the wholesale grocer, and the - retailer, Each of these make large, and many of them enormous profits, from which it Is evident that the consumer Is com pelled to pay many times the original cost for a pure at Wile, or forced to use an adulterates' or inferior one. It is with a view to remedy this evil that out gigantic enterprise was formed over 11 year Ago which has been a perfect gucces., and we e ventured to open a Store in Erie, so that we may better avegmtnixlitte our customers west of New York State.
