Erie, July '2, 1869-2 t
Strange Conduct.--Gov. Geary's Fourth
of July Speech.,
In common with many of our citizens, We
have been much surprised at the course pur
sued by the Dispatch in relation to GOv.
Geary's address at the corner-stone ceremon
ies on the Fourth. This policy is the more
strange because the Dispatch claims to be a
Republican paper, and the Governor is the
admitted head of that party in Pennsylvania.
The Dispatch's slighting treatment of the
Governor, in its previous notices of the cere
monies, had given rise to considerable com
ment, but it was not expected that it could
resort to such a malignant expedient as de
liberately to misreport his speech on such
an occasion us'the Fourth. All who heard
that magnificent ‘pecimen of forensic skill
know that it was an effort such as few pub
lie men arc capable of producing, and we
can imagine their mortification at seeing the
garbled version of it in the columns of our
cotemporary on the Monday ensuing. Who,
for instance, believes .that a statesman . of
Gov. Geary's acknowledged attainments
would be guilty of contradicting himself in
the ridiculous manner which the Dispatch
would have us believe by the extracts quoted
below—the first paragraph appearing near
the opening, and the last at the close of the
prodUction as it appears in that paper'
"This day ninety-two years ago,-in our
own well beloved city of Philadelphia, a he
roic transaction was consummated in a delib
erative body by the adoption of the•Declara
lion of Independence, in which it ;was - de
(dared, "that all men were created tree and
equal, endowed with certain inalienable
rights, among which are life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness." This noble sentiment
has proved to be, in our day, no "glittering
generality," for every stare in our country is
"redeemed, regenerated, and dbtenthralled by
the genius of
sutiversabefmancip*ation."
"The day, we trust, is vat far distant when
the soil (f this country 'Shall hot be pressed by
the fihd of a :dare, or polluted with that of a
traitor, when all cur people shall be willing
to pledge theinselves to each other, to their
country and to God. that they will devote
the Government, and preserve the Union of
all the States, now and forever, one and in
separable."
Here we have it , plainly expressed in , one
place that slavery nowhere exists in the
country, and in the other the ferv2nt prayer
is offered up that that which has inc existence
may at a "not far distant" "day" be swept
from the face of the land ! tin absurdity like
this would be too bad for a school-boy, much
less a full grown Governor, and the impres
sion inevitably follows that it was a pre
meditated perversion of his language, with
the object of bringing "His Excellency" into
contempt. But this is far from being all.
The whole speech, as printed in the 'pis
• patch, is so* full of garbled and misapplied
quotations, contains so many buncombe ex
pressionS, and in some of its parts is so!sin
gillarly inappropriate, that none who -read it
will believe fora-moment that it is the same .
production which fell so gracefully from the
lips of the Chief Executive of the State of
Pennsylvania. It will not do for our neigh
bor to lay the blame of these -gross offenses
against propriety upon the shoulders of its
phonographic, reporter.. They bear too
plainly the evidence of a studied and mali
cious attempt tp bring the Governor into
ridicule to allow, of an/question among
readerF. In justice to our communi
ty, which always feels proud to render hom
age to the grea't man who presides over the
affairs of our CoMmonwealtb, we protest
against thiS heinous violation of the courte
sies due to our distinguished visitor, and in
sist that the Dispatch shall hasten to make
amends by publishing a full, impartial and
verbatim report of the speech. '
TUE Democratic Convention of 'jefferson
county instructed its delegates to' support
Hon. W. P. Jenks, of that county, as the
Democratic candidate for Congress in this
disniet. The Clearfield Republican, organ
of the Democrats of. that county, also sug
gests Mr. Jenks as a candidate; from which
we infer that there is a concerted movement
on the part of our 'friends in the Eastern por
tion of the district, to press that gentleman
into the service. lie has been a member of
the two last Legislatures, and won the repu
tation of being one of the ablest and purest
members of that body. We believe it to be
the intention of Warren county to present
'the name of Judge Brown, who is acknowl
fedged,to be one of the strongest men in the
district. The counties east of Erie claim
that as we have had the nominee, twice out
01 three campaigns, he of right belongs this
year to thafportion of the district, and thus
fiat we have heard of no Democrat here who
has any disposition to become a candidate.
Our relations with the rest of the district, up
to this period, have been so pleasant and
harmonious, that the Democrats of Erie
county will undoubtedly be ready to agree
to any movement that promises /to continue
them and promote the general advantage of
the cause.
ON the forenoon of the Fourth a Coal
black negro, who had been overcome by an
excess of patriotism, or something equally
soothing, wac discovered by the side of a
fence on Peach street, in a condition of total
oblivion to the occurrences around him.
Some disloyal waz, not having the fear of
Thad. Stevens or the Freedman's Bureau be
fore his eyes, had posted a paper on the fence
above him, with the words upon it: "Radi
cal party." The scene attracted., it vast
amount of attention as the processio; passed

aren.t has rendered his chances more pre
carious. The latter and his friends arc
laboring with unceasing energy, and profess
to be hopeful of a successful result. They
expect the vale in the city, South Erie and
Mill Creek to be nearly unanimous for him,
and claim a large support in sections Of the
county considered . by Scofield's advocate s to
be impregnable. Mr. Cutler has a good deal
of strength in Girard and th 6 South-western
townships,'hut the probabilities of his'carry
log a majority vote are not regarded by the
old politicians 'as favorable. The struggle
really lies between Scofield and Kiria . , and
the clever qualities of the l a tt er , j„i n ,.a it ,
his moderatei views and obliging disposition,
enlists the sympathies of most Democrats.
Between the two men, few persons will dis
pute that Ring is the best for the intere. , ts of
the county, and the one who would give least
reason to ( complain of 'partizan unfairness.
A =nil canvass is being waged over the
Assembly, Commissioner and Poor Director
nominatioA The city claims a member and
is pressing" Mr. Moorhead vigorously, with
some show Of success. On the other hand,
it is contended that the party rules entitle
Messrs. Strnahau and Rca to two terms,
and the friends of the latter are working
"like beavers." These three arc all that have
been announced, and one of them must make
up ht mina to Lo left at horn,. Tin,
Delman _Radicals make a deail-set against
Rca, on account of his real or supposed tem
perance proclivities, while the enemies of
the Poor Rouse removal arc equally active
against Stranahan, because of his avowed
support of that measure. In the eastern
townships, this latter question is the main
one of the canvass, and the Radicals there
being generally in favor of the removal,-will
give Stranahan their support with few dis
senting votes.
The exciting Poor Ilnuse controversy en
ters equally into the choice of a Commission
er and Poor Director, and the nomination of
candidates for both these offices will wholly
be decided on this issue. All the other can
didates for Commissioner have withdrawn,
and the race is narrowed down to Mr. Childs,
of Wayne, one of the present' incumbents,
and Jackson McCreary, of West Mill Creek,
—the latter for the retention of the property,
and the former for its sale and the removal of
the institution. The fight has 'become so
hot, that, whichever side wins, there will be
great dissatisfaction, and each party threaten
to place an independent candidate in the
field in case of defeat. If the Democrats act
shrewdly, this quarrel may yet result con
siderably,to our advantage. Mr. Thompson,
the present Poor Director, who sustains the
proposed sale, is a candidate for re-election,
and ere have not heard Who Mc opposition
have decided to pit against him.
The heavy Radical majority precludes the
pobsibility of a regularly nominated Democrat
being elected to either of these oil - 16s, and
we can therefore have no more interest in
the warfare than to hope that the beSt man
may win, and, litic Macawher, patiently wait
for "something to turn up."
TILE Fornur,—The celebration of the
Fourth in this 'city came up fully to the ex
pectations
°Nile public, and was an occasion:
long to he remembered in our loca/ annals.
The crowd was the largest we have seen in
the city for years, and, although the day was
intensely hot, most of them managed to keep
in good humor, and to enjoy themselves in
a satisfitctory manner. The main feature of
the occasion was 'the procession and the
pital grounds. The former was participated
in by many of_the local societies, and was
over a mile in length, numbering probably
fifteen hundred or two thousand persons.
Owing to the heat and dust, comparatively
few of .the spectators accompanied it to the
Hospital grounds. The Masonic exercises
were admirably conducted and commanded
the close :attention of the audience from_lf.
ginning to end. At their termination, wt'lt
ten addresses were delivered by Gov.loeaty
and Attorney-General Brewster—thi• lat
ter 'being a remarkably appropriate and
beautiful composition, , while_ the fornier.
was a piece of the most ordinary twaddle we
haye heard recited in a long period. The
Governor has nerer been much of a favorite
among our people, andhi4visit on the Fourth
has not added anything tp their estimate of
his talents or personal qualities. .-As a fitting
testimonial to his efforts in of the Hos
pital, Hon. 31. B. Lowry' as chosen to pre
side over the assembly. The cxereises were
interspersed with the singing of several pa
triotic odes, in which the audience joined
with considerable fervor. We have never
attended a more delightful? occasion of the
sort, taken as a -whole, andLinssure those of
our citizens who negleted to be present that
they •missed one of the most enjoyable
features of the day. A. fine display of fire
works closed the festivities. The members
of the Committees of Arrangement, the
Marshals, and all who took part in the pub
lic demonstrations, deserve great credit-, and
our sole regret in connection- with the occa
sion is, that our crowded space prevent , us
from.giving such a report of the day's pfo•
ceeilings as they so eminently deserve,
Tot miners in the Mercer coal regions
continue to hold out for advanced wages,
which the proprietors resolutely refuse them.
its a conseqUence, very little coal is coming
to market, few boats are running, and trade
at the docks is nearly suspended. The sup
ply of coal:both at the mines and our hatbox,
is almost exhausted, and dealers fear • that
they will be-unable to fill their contracts.
The owners of the coal banks claim that ut
the present prices they cannot afford to pay
higher wages, and the •miners contend that
they cannot live at the present rates. Be
tween them, they are causing an immense
amount of Ithgs, annoyance and profimity to
large numbers of people.
Tae Radical Convention in the adjoining
county of Jefferson, Ohio, (the home of Ben.
Wade and G eit Garfield) unanimously adopt
ed the faowing resolution. We commend
it to the deliberate reflection of that large
Anti-Tariff element in our comity which acts.
with the Radical organization
"Re:qaccd,_ That this Convention is opposed
to the doctrine of "Free Trade," and that we
regard the subject of a Tariff as a legitimate
subject of legislation. And that we earnestly
invite the attention of our representative in
Congress to these quekions ; to the end that
the industrial and manufacturing interests of
the country may be alike amply protected.
Tim City Councils passed a series of reso
lutions on Monday evening, reciting that as
the Poor House farm was originally given in
trust by the State - to the city, and by it trans
ferred to the county for _the benefit of the
poor of the county, no sale can take place
witkout its consent, and protesting against
the proposition to dispose of it i ond change
the location of the Poor House buildings. _
TIM Gazette wants 'to know where
John D. Stmnainm stands -on the Poor
House question. The Corry Teleghtli,
speaking undoubtedly by authority, responds

Having witnessed the operation of this7l:lr
i.ow at the trial on the land of Gen. Killpatrick,
on the lsth of June, I have no hesitation in Say
lug that I believe it to be a very :superior Imple
ment of its class, and quite worthy the atten
tion of all who have occasion to use smelt an ar
ticle. Its flexibility—which causes it to adapt
itself clobely to the surface of the go atml, how
ever rough or uneven it may be, is a feature of
much Importance, awl one that distlngue,he,
this front' all other HarroWs.. There are at_,)
other peculiarities in its construction which
will be readily perceived by the intelligent far
mer, and which will doubtless tend, ere long. to
bring it into general use. I have purchased one
of these Harrows for use on toy land.
