WARllEN.—Without the least disposition to
disparage any of the other towns of this sec
tion, we must give the palm to Warren of
being the prettiest and finest located interior
place in North-Western Pennsylvania. A
half dozen or more flying trips there had
given us a favorable impression of it before,
but last Friday, being called to visit the town
on business, we were prevailed upon by in•
ducements that could not be resisted, to ex
tend our visit half a day longer, than we in
tended, and had every reason to congratulate
ourself upon the delay. Situated on a high
bank, overlooking the beautiful Allegheny,
with lofty mountains on all sides, and just
enough valley to give a picturesque effect to
the scenery, there is no other inland place
that we have seen which competes with it in
the qualities that make tip a desirable resi
dence. The spot seems to have been especi
ally designed by nature for a handsome town,
and it is hard to resist the conclusion that its
founders must have been artists as well as
practical men of business. The people of
Warren manifest a degree of local pride com
mensurate with the rich privileges which
they enjoy, and spare no pains to render .the
attractions of nature still more fascinating by
the adornments of human taste and skill.
The town contains more than its proportiott
of elegant churches and private dwellings,
come of which would be creditable to com
munities of many times its size. We traversed
it in every direction, and do not recollect of
seeing more than a.half dozen houses in all
that did not wear the appearance of comfort
and tasteliness. The cemetery at this place
is a spot of unusual beauty. It is located on
the side of a hill, overldoking,the river, and
commands a full view of the town and sur
rounding country for miles. There are more•
fine monuments titan in our own, though it is
hardly tour years old, and some of the lots
arc arranged with exquisite neatness. With
,a bridge across the Allegheny, which 'it is
strange to us has not been erected long ago,
and,better roads, Warren would approach as
near to pet fection as it is possible fora place
to attain in the comparatively unmroved
condition of out country. A pleasanter place to
spend a few weeks of recreation we cannot
conceive, and we are greatly deceived if, in
course of time, it does not become a favorite
resort for people from the cities in search of
health and pleasure. During our stay; we
were under special obligations to Brother
Morris, of the Ledger, to whom and his esti
mable lady we owe the pleasantest day we
have passed in a long period.
A SPLENDID C'ErirE—The new iron Pro
flatter "Philadelphia,'-' of Evans!-Line, under
charter from the Anchor Line, made us her
first visit on the 11th inst. But a few years
since a schooner of 1011 whit was looked upon
as a large vessel ; now here is an iron one
of fifteen times the size, and resembling in
appearance a majestic ocean steamer. We
are m hopes to see more of such enterprise,
and a line of such crafts, owned by the Phila.
& Erie R. R. Co., or this •enterprising trans
portation company, the .Anchor _Line. , The
* dimensloils of the Philadelphia 'are "228'fbet
keel, 216 feet entire length, 34 3-8 feet bearit,
16 feet hold; taken as an average with the
sheer of the vessel; and six: watertight 'iron
bulkheads. She is propelled by 'fit' &int&
cylinder marine condensing engine, with 38
inch caliber by 26 inch stroke, and ti ten
feet ten inch wheel. She is furnished with
an improved steering apparatus, said to be
superior to a*thing yet invented. Her bur
then is 1403 tons, with capacity for 75,000
bushels of grain.

The Legislaturpha. passed a law, exempting
the fon - owing real, estate property froin taxa
tion of all kinds: '
All lands whiclithave been or may here
after be granted, within this State, to any
officers or soldiers of the line of this State, by
virtue of any resolution of Congress, or law
of this State, as a Ireward of their services for
and during:the life of such officer or soldier
unless the same shall be transferred or
aliened to any other person. All churches,
meeting-houses or other regular places of
stated religious worship, with the ground
thereto annexed, or the occupancy and bet
ter enjoyment of the same ; all burial grotmds
bclongi% to any religious congregation, all
universities, colleges, academie!, and-school
houses, belonging to any county, borough or
scheel district, or incorporated city, erected,
endowed or established by virtue of any law
of.this Commonwealth, with ground thereto
annexed, and all courthouses and fails:
Taxes heretofore assessed on any such
Property shall not hereafter he collected,tut
the respective officers, charged with the col
lection thereof are exiionerated from the col
lection and paying over of the same : Pro
dded, That five acres of land, together with
the improvements tliereon, attached to al
such religious congregations, universities),
colleges, academies and school houses, be

kitchen stove, and the flames spread so rap
idly that, the inmates barely saved their lives.
Everything in and about the premises was
destroyed, incinding the larger portion of the

are without a fire department, and the recent
conflagrations should be a warning to them
to delay no longer in securing an effective or
ganization of that kind.
Tin corner stone of a new edifice for Eu
reka Lodge No. 360, Ancient York Masons,
was laid at Union Mills on Thursday of last
week. A large number of Masons were
present from the neighboring cities and
towns, and the proceedings are reported to

German emigrants, who were taken west
ward on the propellor line. This is a new
feature of the road, and one that promises to

date we may expect the emigrant trains over
the.P. SE. road as regularly as we have
heretofore been accustomed to sec them on

Tim Gazette, which represents the anti-
Lowry faction of Radicalism, intimates that
a movement is on foot to call the primary
meetings outside• of the official sanction of
the County Committee. Tlie reason of this
is, that the latter body does not deem it ad
visable to hold tht meetings as early as the
Gazette party desire. The anti-Lowry men
think that Eric county should be the first to
designate a candidate for Congress, while the
friends of Lowry, who control the Commit
tee, seem disposed to Put the day of nomina
tion off as long as they conveniently can. We
suspect that if the truth Were known, Mr.
Lowry would just ns soon 'have Scofield the
nominee as not, believing that such a result
would certainly secure the choice of hifftself
