And as we - sat in social chat, O'er steaming cops atm, I don't know what we're coining to .' Says Mrs. Smith, says she. "They're making laws at Such a rate, It almost drives me wild; They do riot care for God, I think, -. For Woman, man, nor child. They've forced the negroes in the ears, • Along with you and ine ; . And Who knows where they'll foree;them next Says Mrs. Smith, says she. - • '• Their children are...to go to school - Along with sour s and mine. And if we white folks should object, Our rights we can resign. All social lines must be removed Because the blacks are free ; • Such things are not to be endured," . Says Mrs. Smith, Says she. "And not content with all these gifts. Bestowed a ith lavish hand, The negroes must be fed and clothed Throughout the Southern land. The taxes now are high enough, But what they yet may be, 'Tis not in human power to guess," Says. Mts.!. Smith, says she. Lion that "public" business was tole trans acted upon high considerations of utility and principle, has been swept away. Instances have become frequent of members bluntly demanding on matters purely public, " How much money is there to be had ?'' - Towards the close of the last session some gentlemen had determined to institute cried-, nal proceedings against tvrionsmembers for taking bribes. These gentlemen were ap palled when met by a threat to retaliate upon the members risen their own county; and a show of bands was made, disclosing incon testible evidence that it could be done and. that effectually. Ratlierthan bring their own neighbors - and acquaintances into disrepute and trouble, the proceedings were unwisely abandoned. NO. 16 On a previous occasion we referred to an attempt made by the members in framing the General Appropriation Bill, to vote them selves larger salaries than they were entitled. to. We explained how the bottom of the . Treasury was reached, and how, after trying to.harrt the Sinking Fund into the General Fund, that it also might be exhausted, the • salaries were made considerably less than was intended, because the money could not • be found to mike - them larger. Brit another scheme was resorted to, list winter, on a larger scale than ever before, for increasing the einolumetits. The greater portion of the . Senators and Representatives took on sons with WWI, who were appointed to places of one sort or another about the Legislature. Bo many of the members were engaged in this dodge that they *ere enabled to make the pay of these youngsters all they dared. Thig practice is greatly to be reprobated. It has. come to amount to taking indirectly from the 'Treat:ivy sums that the members dare not . • take directly. Ina late 'number of the Lynchburg Vir ginian. we find the following: • A friend who has been residing on the peninsula fur some months past, informs us that there are about 4,0011 negroes between Williamsburg and Ilampban—a distance of thirty-six miles. These people are sustained with rations furnished by the government, at a cost of 00,000 monthly, while five comps nics of cavalry are required to patrol the country to prevent depredaticins. Every ef fort has been made to induce a portion of them to remove to POI Ids, the oMeen; of the Government offering them free transporta tion. There is a - standing offer of this nature made by Gen. Arm strong, of the Freedmen's Bureau, to convey the men and their families to any point they may select, with the view of engaging in useful Tabor. But they have persistently refused every offer of the kind and rejected every overture made to.get them employment. Under the provisions of the civil rights bill it is impossible to do anything contrary to their wishes, and so they remain huddled within this limited area and are a heavy tax upon the government. Some- of them have taken to highway robbery, and, but for, the presence of a large Cavalry , ' fore, a residence in that country would be mtoler able. how lung, we wonder, will the people submit to this enormous tax to support such idle and worthless pets of the Black Repub lican tarty Verily: Radicalism is a dear experiment, taxing the patience and pockets of the people to a degree unprecedented in the history of any country." The facts speak for themselves ; seven ht4l dred and twenty thousand dollars takeneyery year from our pcoplo to sup port hi idleness twenty-eight thousand ne groes, who will not accept work when offered. And, if •the people sustain the Radical how many more thousand idle negroes to the Southern StateS will they be compelled to maintain, to furnish Fadical voters!
