aided us very largely in the campaign of 1864,
was the nominee for Congress, against Gen's
Du tier, in the Fifth District of Massachusetts.
Ifs election vas, of course, not to be expect
ed, but it would have reflected infinitely more
credit on the district if he bad been chosen.
The cold spell of the list few days has
made an extensive demand for stoves, and all
who have examined their stock admit that the

Hon. C. V. Culver, the notorious bank de;
feulter, and Radie%l Congressman for the
Crawford, Venango, Mercer and Clarion dis
trict, is 110110119 to obtain his release from the
jail at Franklin, where he has been confined
for some months. On the 7th inst , he appear
ed before Judge Turnkey, on a writ of habeas
corpus, claiming his privilege as a member of
Congress to be discharged from arrest and
imprisonment. - After. able arguments by
counsel on both sides, Judge Trunkey decided
that a member of Congress is not entitled to
the Privllege when held for an indictable of
tense. Mr. Culver has bad a full realisation
by this time of

The two lectures of Dr. Did Lewis, in Far
rar Wall, on Tuemilayand Wednesday evenings,
were of a nature that we wish could be more
frequently heard in every community. The

dies could do, if they undertook, and particu
larly as relates to their influence upon the

Culture," was one of the most practical and

The weather has been bitterly, cold during
a portion of the week, but at the time that we
write, on Wednesday, has moderated consid

& Erie road - the snow has been packed to the
depth of two and three feet,
The pity treasnry hay-run short. of funds,
and persons who do work for the .corporation
are obliged to take - their - pay in city warrants.
Parties who cannot afford to hold them are
compelled to sell at a discount, and the logs to
them in some cases is consideroble. The Buf
feters by this state of affairs are mostly msn
who can poorly afford to be deprived of any
portion of their juts'. dues, and we hopo some
coarse will at once be adopted by which all
employed by the city will receive , every cent
which of right belongs to them. A prosperous
community like ours should be ab?ve depriving
any man of the full value of the services that
he perform+ for it.

has been placed on but, one committee, and
that one of the most unimportant—the corn

Speaker has a proper appreciation of our Rep
resentative, or he would surely bare given him

The line of omnibuses from the foot of
State street to Federal Rill was placed in oper
ation on Muni ty. The conveyances are nest
disposition on the part of our citizens to make
and comfortable, and there seems to be •

of the basses are well loaded, though whether
this will continue after the present sharp
weather has ptisised by remains to be seen.
Gov. Marvin, PfFlerid,, whose admirable
letter to the 19th'ef September Conservative
meeting in this city will be remembered by
most of our readers, has been re-elected Unto
ted States Senator for Florida on the firstbal
lot. He bas decided to remain at home until
the question of the admission of the Southern
Senators and Representatives is decided. .
• The lovers of Ethiopian Minstrelsy will do
well to beat in mind the entertainment to be
given in Farrar Hall, on • Friday evening, by
Burgess & Laßne'e Troupe. From tall we can
learn, we judge their performance to be well
worth seeing.

The Corry Telegraph of last week, contain
ed the following horrible story. As we have
heard_ no further particulars, we suspect that
the Telegraph has been made -the victim' of
some "gay deceiver :"
"A woman coming in on one of. the morn-.
ing trains gays that she beard of a horrible
murder that had been committed a short die
tencefrom• Corry, under the following circum
stances. It appears that pedlar called at
a house and asked ,to stay all night, which
was objected to, on the account of there be.
log no one in the house but two 'girls.. These
girls however, are said to hare gone to a
neighbor and got two other girls to stay with
'them, and let the pedlar stay. The house
where the last two girls came from being left
win: only one occupant=the mother of the
girls, the father being away.
In the night, the house where the pedlar
was. was entered by a man dirgnised with
Malik on his face, and two girls killed ; and
it was supposed that the intention was to
the pedlar. The• Fitter, hearing the
noise, and the mur lerer approaching his
room, ho shot the murderer. The woman in
the ,neighbor's house was then aroused ; and
on Agsieting to wesh the face of the murderer
it Iva found to be her owe haaband. Wheth
er the girls killed were his own daughters or
the other girls our informant could not tell.

sooner or later be felt. Will our democratic
Men le properly look at this matter ? It was
by the gradual introduction of Abolitioti pub
lications, and their influence upon the minds
of the young. that the Opritisition succeeded
in.reeolutionising the country, and we must
resort to the same mode of educating the pub
lic mind if we ever hope to have a return of
the goo I old times of Constitution si law and
national happiness.
An explosion occurred in the oil refinery of
Clark, Payne & Co., in Cleveland,' on Thurs
day last, which wee mo.t terrible in its effects.
Five men were severely injured and one kill
ed outright. The man killed belonged to a
neighboring refinery owned by, lianas, .Do
herty St - Co , and, at the time of the explosion,
was walking along the Pile of Clark, Payne
& Co`e. receiving' house—the; building des
troyed—which was literally scattered to
the four winds of heaven by the-powerful ex
plosive effects of the gas. Two men. Burton
and Lawler, steam fitters, were in the building,
and were blown through a twelve inch. brick
wall. How they escaped a' sudden and fear
ful death is unaccountable. Burton, it is be
lieved; will not recover froz the injury, nod •
Worthy Clark; a brother of one - of the firm,
was so badly Injured that ' his recovery is
exceedingly doubtful. ,

ticulars of the death of James Anderson
Esq.,,.a gentleman intimately known to the
oldtkruidents of our city. lie was in the
hshie of visitinifthe office of that paper, with
which he wte formerly editorially connected,
to imai the morning exchanges. •On the
12th inst., he. entered as usual,—we quote
from the Herald—'. with his pleasant saluta
tion and a smile, lit his pipe and eat down to
read; within a few moments he fell back is
his 'chair, and, shortly afterwards breathed
his last." The cause of his death is penoun
ced to have been heart disease. Mr. Ander •
'eon was born in or near Fairview, in Mil
