The two lectures of Dr. Did Lewis, in Far
rar Wall, on Tuemilayand Wednesday evenings,
were of a nature that we wish could be more
frequently heard in every community. The
first one, upon "The Social Influence of Wo•
man," Aims an interesting sketch of what la
dies could do, if they undertook, and particu
larly as relates to their influence upon the
other sex. The stconfl lecture, on "Physical
Culture," was one of the most practical and
useful discourses we have ever heard, The ;
Doctor pointed oat plain language the l .

to which our peoplerare subject, and though at

The first number of the daily Oil City Reg

The edi'orial department is under the charge
of our friend W "If. Johns, Esq., wh . ose °spa°,
ity to make a lively and useful paper will not
he disputed. The daily Regisfer will be of
good service to the interests of Oil City, and
the people of that locality owe it to them
selves that it should receive a generous
support. A very strinking illustration
of the rapid prosperity of North Western
Pennsylvania is shown in the feet that six
daily papers ere now established in this sec

Crawford and Venal:ma—where, five years

than a living patronage. Two of * these are

others in places, which at the same period
were mere villages of a few hundred in poit=

The weather has been bitterly, cold during

wind to permit of goad Welshing. A heavier
fag of snow took. place on Ttiesday evening
and Wednesday, under the most favorable cir
cumstances, the ground being firmly frozen,
and theroads mostly in a smooth stste. The
horrible condition of the latter has rendered
travelling peculiarly diffra fit during the past
few weeks, and a generti d sire is felt for the
continuation of a long sleighing season. The
drifted •now has given great trouble to the
railroads, and since Simi ty trains bait been

The pity treasnry hay-run short. of funds,

Parties who cannot afford to hold them are
compelled to sell at a discount, and the logs to
them in some cases is consideroble. The Buf
feters by this state of affairs are mostly msn
who can poorly afford to be deprived of any
portion of their juts'. dues, and we hopo some
coarse will at once be adopted by which all
employed by the city will receive , every cent
which of right belongs to them. A prosperous
community like ours should be ab?ve depriving
any man of the full value of the services that
he perform+ for it.
,We'perceiee that our member of Congress
has been placed on but, one committee, and
that one of the most unimportant—the corn

• higher position. Jr' be could Gull' read the
enconiunis upon Judge Scofield's talents ty
his party press in this district, and the high

have selected him, if not for leader of the

of its most prominent committees.

The work of official decapitation is still
slowly progressing, although, iron the fact
that.all the higher appointments have to go
