TAKE NOTICE.—As the BUM for fruit and
berries approaches, our citiiens are suffering
from the depredations of petty thieves and
pilferer; jet many cases the children of re
spectable people, whose parents do not dream
of the occupation of their offspring. It may
not be generally known that under the act of
18G0, the stealing'of fruit ficun tho tree or on
the ground is a serious offence, and tie rem
edy is simple and prompt. By that law the
Wilful taking and tarrying away cf fruit,
Vegetables, plants, vines, shrubs or 'trees, is
made a misdemeanor punishable in the Court
of Quarter Sessions, and rendering the of
fender liable to a doe of $5O and imprison
ment for sixty days. The course of proceed
ings under this act is plain and easy. A com
plaint before any Alderman or Justice of the
Peace is all that any person has to do. The
law will do the rest. This is the criminal
remedy. For those who prefer it, there Is a
civil remedy. By another section, any otie
who : shall wilfully enter or break , down,
through or over any orchard, garden, yard or
fende, hot bed or green house, or who shall
wrongfully club, stone, cut, break, bark or
mutilate any tree, shrub, bush, vine, Sc , or
walk over, beat down or trample, or in any
way injure any grain, grass, vines, vegetables
or crops," shall, cn conviction bolero any al
derman or justice of the peace, or in any
court have judgment ogvicst him in any • Ellin,
not lees than $5 or more than $lOO with costs•
This fine is to go one-half to the informer and
one-half to the occupant or owner of the land.
Iq default of pay - Mont, the? offender must go
to jail. 'The law how provides a full nudoim
ple retnetly'against the plunder and damaging
of gardens or yards, end it is the fault otthe
owners if they suffer.
The Girard Spectator of last week responds
to Mr. Lowry's libel suit by a half colurrn of
charges and insinuations; which must be very
mortifying tf, the Senator,' whether true or
false. The - editor of the Spectator has un
cltubtedly determined that, let the libel case
turn out as it may, Lowry shall be none tho
more' comfortable far it. He is strongly
backed up by some of (he wealthiest and most
influential men in the county, of both•political
Parties, and, as he has shown himself a
man of grit the sympathies of the public
are rapidly turning in his "favor. We learn
that the notoriety given to the Spectator by
the suit which Lowry has Instituted, has al
ready tuid the result of adding largely to its
list.' New subscribers are pouring in upon
the editor by the dozen, and, what is most
curious, two thirds of them are men of the
same political creed as our Senator. By this
time, Me. Lowry is probably willing to admit
the justice of our opinion that he made a great
mistake in commencing this suit. The people'
regard it as no more than right that when a
man holds official position, his public and
personal ads should be the free subjects of
criticism by the press, and when they see him
attempting to arrest this privilege they loya
tinbly take aides against' him.
The Boston Evening Commercial thus points
out " the road to fortune." Says that jour.
tel
"One of the famotis wealthy men of the
country—a Man who counted his worldly
goods by tens of millions—was in the habit
of attributing hie great stfo..en in business to
the fact - that he had always advertised erten.
sive!) , in the newspapers of the day. This is
but a solitary instance among the t wands
which might be adduced to prove—if any
prod* were needed—that the royal road to
wealth lies through the advertising columns of
the newspapers. The man„lyho desires to cre
ate or retain an extensive trade, must make
the public familiar with his name and place of
business, the character of his merchandise,
and his prices. More especially does this ob
servation hold true, when'the merchant strikes
out a new path in business enterprise, by an
improved method of conducting- his affairs, or
by reducitiß the prices of .his. goods below the
standard of the-market. Such a man is .sure•
to reap a rich reward (rem a judicious system
of advertising-n
The Commercial then refers to a case of re
cent occurrence in Boston. A merchant of
that city, after doing business some three
years without advertising, concluded to try
the experiment, and the Tult was that his
trade almest doubled within-.tea days. Re is
now doing the largest busirfess of the kifld in
the city, employing some eighty assistants.—
This, is en overwhelming proof that the royal
road to wealth lies through the advertising
cclumns of the newspapers.

After showing by facts which have not been
disputed, and which cannot truthfully.be de
nied, the falsehood of the Gazette's artiole of
a couple Weeks ago, accusing Nlr. Clymer of
enmity to the soldiers, the' Corry Telegraph
has the assurance to copy' the editorial of the
Gazette in full, without a word of excuse, sr
igulment or palliation. ' The same paper prints
the bold and infamous slander ac

with having placed the names of a number of
deserters and dead men upon its list, to help
swell the number. Wo published several week •
ago some resolutions of the club in 'which this
gross falsehood was denied, and characterised

of such unmanly misstatements as these that
the Radical organs hope to succeed in the

do not think it at all probable that the projct
will be
. allowed to fail. On the contrary, we
have, strong faith that in a very short time the
road will be an accomplished face. It should
not be forgotten, however, that upon the lib

the success or failure of the road depends."
We Understand that subscriptions to the $50.-

fair prosptct that the full amount will be
raised here and along the line of the road

The Greenville Argus urges its Republican
friends In Crawford county to abolish their
present system of nominating candidates for
office, and return to the one in practise in
Erie and spoilt of the other counties of the
State. Itcontends that the system has already
in a great measure "destroyed the harmony
and good feeling of the party, and another
such canvass as the !)4'itlecen Pettis and

effect of placing the county in the hands of
the opposition." Should the latter resale be
effected, we say, beep the system a going.

"A. young lady in bleed township lately be

future husband's' food. The result was that
they poisoned and nearly killed him, and he
is now talking strongly of instituting a suit

We not•co4hat the Republicans of Vcnango

this the same gassy chap who was formerly in

If so, we beg of the Republicans of that dis
