• The dishonest course pursued by a ma
jority of -the Republican journals of the
, conotry, in ,attempting to mislead their
1 readers as to the true policy of the Radi
cal msjority in Congress, is deserving of
the severest condemnation at the hands
of all honest men. Those papers whose
editors are the recipients of lucrative go,-
. ernment office, are especially impudent
and truckling in their conduct. They cov
ertly do all in their power to aid such rad
ical distinionists as Sumner, Stevens and
Wade to defeat the wise measures inau
gurated by the President to restore tise
States/lately in rebellion to their former.
states/in the Union ; while at the same
time; for the sake of enjoying the public.
pap, f they hypocritically profess to be the
exclusive friends and guardians of Mr.
Johnseti and hii policy. When the bold
but indiscreet Stevens, or the malicious
:3timrter, go ahead of their party and an
-,"ftounce dogmas that are repugnant to pub
lic opinion, or outrage parlimantary deco
rum and insult the people by blackguard
ing the chief Magistrate of the.country,
these hypocritical journals deny that the
marplots are the leaders of their party or
the exponents of its policy.
Yet these very papers, and the ruling
majority in Congress, whenever it -comes
to a vote on the measures propeaed by
these destructionists, or the manipulating
of public sentiment, obey the whip and
rein without a murmur. How long will
the party which has heretofore sustained
these papers be gulled? It is time the
Pfe,ident was using the power be p068P.16-
. es, of withdrawing ptiblic patronage from
the conductors of these two-faced and dis
honest journals. By retaining them longer.
in lucrative positions or feeding them from
the public crib,he gives them the credit of
being friends of his policy, whilithey are
secretly plotting its overthrow and the
ruin of the country. It is, we think, a
great mistake to suffer puolic patronage
to remain in the hands of those who are
plotting mischief, rather, than at this
' critical time, to make official changes. A
• general cleansing of the Augean stables
would cause no undue excitement or re•
Lard public business. The appointment of
conservative men to all places of trust and
profit, would make the public at large feel
mor• oonlidence that the'President and
his restoration policy would triumph and
the future prosperity and perpetuity of
the country be secure.—Biffa/o Courier.
