One of the• most singular developments
of the times is the appearance in Ameri
can public life of a class of men who can
not' make speeches. Thus, we have a
Lieutenant General who, when he is fair
ly cornered by the admiring crowd, will
not let a word out of his mouth any mote
titan he would Pemberton out of Vick--
burg, or Lee out of ,Richmond.. General
Sherman, on similar occasions, attempts
but the moat meager replies, although he
is ready and pungent enough with his
pan. General Thomas returns thanks,
and that is all; while the gallant Sheri
dan says : "Excure me, `. boys,' you know
I never make speeches."—Boston Journal.
A young lady in Chicago was betrothed
at the beginning of the war to a lieuten

by his nearest friend and comrade who
was with hint' when• he felt. To this
young man the lady's affections were
transferred in time, and be engaged to
marry him. On the day when they were
to be united, and while the clergyman
was about to join their bands, the lady
suddenly fainted. On recovering. - she
said she bad E.-en the spirit of her lover,
who had forbidden the marriage: Out
of deference to the wishes, of the deceased

GOING TO THlr. DOCTOII.- 1 Mr. TIMM! Ea 4,

admission. As, soon as the door-was
opened, "Dash " waited into the' sur

Istrzsesrirm Natonanas.—A correspond
ent of the New York 7imes, who bas been

the negro population in that State. Who
of us would like such neighbors ? " Half
a million of freedmen are within the.ber
ders of Alabama. Forty thousand of tbern
ere aged and io4rni, and of course with
out means and str. ngth to assist them
selves. There are, in addition, one bun
dred thousand children, necessarily help
less. Those who are able and unwilling
to perform labor prowl around upon the
farms and plantations, and eke out a mis- •
erable life by stealing and marauding;.—
Take it throughout the State, it is believed
that ten thousand howl and one thousand

by these indolent men and women, all )at

The Washington correspondent of the

exhibited at this session. This is the ap

of large numbers of negroes and negress

They push themselves into the ladies'
galleries and thrust themselves into the
trout seats, and there they sit for hours.
No deoent people will sit on the seats be..
land them or near them, and thus there
is always a wide vacant space between
them and the white people. The negroes
clap their hands end grin and chatter like
monkeys, whenever any of their "friends,

A &rotor Asour Ma. Suartasi.—There is

reached their destination, Mr. Powelltwi t-'

explanation of 'freedom's champion - and
