DAN RICE MAKES A SPICE-OIL—CoI. Dan Rice
is traveling during the winter in the South,
with Howe's circus. At last accounts be was
in Vicksburg, where, the Herald of that • city
says, there was "some little prejadiee oilcloths
in the minds of many against him, owing to
its being circulated that be led urierson's or
some other raid thrbugh the country. His
friends l.new it to be false, but to disabuse the
public mind, he took occasion on Tuesday
night to disclaim all connection with that or
any other raid (except ti raid on somebody's
half dollars to see his trained mules or educe
ted horses) and in that connection he also
suggested to those who had not heard of Lee's
surrender, that the war was over and has bees
some time. To the late Confederate and Fed.
eral soldiers he simply said go on as you
are now doing, cultivating friendly feeling.'
To the negroes be said the United States bas
set you free, but you must work and - be re—
spectful to all, go back to the old plantations,'
and ns for going North, he said the Northern
people did not want them. That Ibis was the
climate for then, and they were needed le - ,
work the plantations, and a great deal more
good advice to the same effect." The Herald
adds that Dan'e remarks were well received,
and it expresses the opinion that altheugh be
"acts the buffoon by contract, he yet does
more, in various ways, to soften and smooth
the asperities of the late war, than any cue
man is the country."
BRYANT & STRATTON'S Besinses COLLEGE
AND TELEGRAPH INSTITUTE.—To Some it may
seem unnecessary to educate their sans for
business, but to the intelligent parent it is as
plain a duty as any. All occupations require
labor, either menial or physical, and educated
labor will ever be in greater dews)] and el=
ways comma'd a better price than uneducated.
The best investment that can be made for a
young man is to qualify him for a position
where he can be independent by his own ex—
ert one. Within the last ten or twelve years
Commercial Colleges have sprung up all over
the land ; tom, possessing true merit, ethers
of a doubtful character. Of the first class
Sies3rt.. Bryant, Stratton & Co.'s National
chain of colleges undoubtedly staid . at the
head, and the Buffalo college is net excelled
if equaled by any. The perfected system of
business practice, originated in this school, is
winning for it a world wide reputation, and
drawing to its halls the best class of wing
men in the states and Canada. Additional
rooms have already been taken, and the pros
peat is that ethers still will be needed. *
DAY.—The observance of New
Years in this city was very general, all the
places of business being closed, and every.
body seeming to be determined to enjoy them
selves to the best of their ability. A greater
number of people than usual kept “opin holi
es," and the list of callers was equal to, if not
larger, than upon previous occasions. A cos
mendable feature was the almost entire abol—
ishment of the practice of offering liqnois, and
sea consequence the buttoner' of intoxication
among callers were comparatively rare. The
different fire companies marched in procession
to the residence of Mayor Farrar, where they
were treated to a liberal lunch. In the after
noon a society of Germans paraded the streets,
preceded by a band, and, in their rich regalia,
making a handsome appearance. As a matter
of course, there were some who could not re—
frain from drinking to excess, but the day,
generally speaking, was observed with as
much propriety as any occasion :f the sort
for many yeay.

The old saying "go abroad for news," is
well exemplified -in the following from the
Harrisburg Patriot of Monday. We suspect
our cotemporsry • has been badly hoaxed, as
no such occurrences as it describes are knows
to have occurred hereabouts :
On Christmas day a couple of Erie detec
tives succeeded in completing the arrest of a
gang of five counterfeiters, who had been
flooding the oil region with counterfeit money
for some time past. The headquarters of the
gang was at Buffalo, N. Y. -The detectives
" put themselves in connection with it," and
completed • bargain with its chief, J. W.
Bowles, for $28.000 to " shove " le the oil re
gions. Bowles rent ens of the /sag. Thomas
Hale. to Erie with the. stuff, where he was
nabbed. A letter vs" then sent to Bowles,
stating that Hale was slot, midis is deliver
the money, and that be should Sem* on imme
diately. Bowles sante and was nabbed, also.
The detectives then went le SWAN and wrote
to the three remaining members of the gang
that Bowles' leg had bees broken la an Seel
dent which had occurred to the train upon
which he west to Erie ; that he was then ly
ing at a hotel is Buffalo, sad requested their
immediate pressnee. They came and were
gotbled. Thus ended that gang.
