lll'lo4 of the Triangle.
Late Erie, as also the town of Erie, derived
its name from a powerful tribe of Indians of
that name—located upon the south shore of
the late; and from discoveries of Indian
mounds, burial grounds, and other relics
found in this vicinity, this must have been
their headquarters. The fine hunting-grounds
in the neighborhood, as also the abundance
of fish in the bay, was probably the induce
ment. They were called " Eries " or "Cat
Tribe" by the other tribes, and were named
by the early French explorers as the "Chats"
or "Neutral Nation."
The original name- given to the place by
the French waa " Presque Isle," which algal
lies "almost an Island" or "Peninsula."
The name "Erie " was given by the State
authorities, when -the act to "lay out the
town " was passed by the Legislature, July,
1791; The town welt laid out in sections a
mile square each.. In July, 1805, the first
section was incorporated into a "Borough."
The history of the " Triangle "—so called
from being a portion orterritory in that shape
lying between the north line of Pennsylvania,
42° N. L. and Lake Erie, and the west bean
dtry of New York, (the northern boundary of
Pennsylvania striking the lake a short die-
Lance above the mouth of 'Elk Creek,)—is as
follows :
In 1785, Davia Rittenhouse, on the part of
Pennsylvania. and Samuel Holland on the
part of New York, were appointed commis
sioners to run the northern line between
Pennsylvania and New York, they fixing the
northeast corner on the Delaware river at 42°
N. L, and running due west. The lacteal
enoy of the weather prevented them orymplet.
log the survey. In 1786, Andrew Ellicott was
appointed for , Pennsylvania, and James Clin
ton and Simeon De Witt on the part of New
York, who completed the line in 1787, making
this northern boundary 259 miles, 88 perches
in length from the starting point on the Del.
aware river, to its termination on the margin
of Lake Erie, which is about six miles from
the Ohio line. These surveys were confirmed
by Acts of Assembly in 1789.
In negotiations with the Indian tribes for
the purchase of the lands of Western New,
York, and Northwestern Pennsylvania, the
Triangle, or "Presque Isle lands " were mei.
dentally left out and became an isolated frac
tion, claimed at different times by New York,
Virginia, Massachusetts and Connecticut. It
having been discovered by early explorations
and surveys that Pennsylvania had but a few
miles of lake coast, and no harbor, measures
were taken by the State authorities to get
possession of this piece of territory. After
considerable negotiation, a survey was keel
and the eastern line established where it now
is ; the other States ard individuals pretend
ing to claim having released.
In June, 1788, the General Governmest au
thorized the " Board of Treasury " to nego
tiate for the sale of this tract of land to Penn
sylvania, which was concluded and confirmed
by Congress in September following—declar
ing that the "jurisdiction, etc., of Pennsyl
vania, shall extend over said treat of land,
and every part thereof, the same as if it tad
been originally within the charter bounda
ries of said State." -
In October, 1788 0 ,Congreas appropriated
£1,200 to purchase the Indian title, in ful
fillment of the contract to eel! ft to Pennsyl
vania. At the treaty of Fort Harmer, Janu
ary, 1789, Cornplanter and the other chiefs
of the "Six Nations" signed a deed in con
s'deration of the £1,200, ceding the "Presque
Isle lands," to be vested in the State of Penn
sylvania. The Governor of Pennsylvania was
authorized to complete the purchase, which
was fully consummated in March, 1792, and
the consideration, amounting to $151',640 25,
paid in Continental certificates. This "Tri
angle " contains 202,187 acres.
FOIIOEIIIEB AT MMADVILLZ.—On Tuesday of
last week two drafts were returned to the
banks in Meadville, which bore evidences of
forgery. One of these was a draft on Culver,
Penn & C0.,-New York, in favor of Mrs. O. 8
Baker, for $9 50, drawn by the cashier of the
National Bank of Crawford County, and since
its issue altered to read $9O 60, and cashed
to that amount by the Corry National Bank.
In the other instance the draft was obtained
from the Merchant's National Bank, of Mead
ville, in favor of the same party for $8 35, and
was altered to read $BO 35, and was cashed
by the First National Bank of Warren, Pa
Both drafts, in the ordinary course of busi
ness, were presented to Culver, Penn & Co.,
New York, and there the forgery was detec'ed.
They were of course returned, and the Corry
bank loses $Bl 00 in the operation, and the
Warren bank $72 00.

Letter from Wellsburg.
WELLastrna, Dec. 18, 1865
Mn. EDITOR: As Wellsburg is a village of
some importance, I thought it, worth while to
notice some few items in conneetien there
with. It is situated about eight miles youth
of Girard, and one mile east of Albion. in the
township of Elk Creek. We have three dry•
goods stores, a large building in process
of erection to be used for the purpose of
veiling goods, a good flouring mill, tannery,
flax mills, two saw mills, &et There is some
fling said in reference to oil here. There have
been five hundred acres of land Fo'd adjoining
this village for oil territory, at from fifty to
one hundred dollars per acre. •Ae to politics,
they are of a darkieh shade. By the way,
this township has not furnished one person
to fill a county office since it has been settled.
We paid a tax, in the township of twenty
thousand dollars last year, and about the
same the present year.
The Titusville & Pithole ralroad, the Oil
Creek Lake & Titusville Mining and Trans
;ortation Co., and the Westfield Railroad Co.
have consolidated into one company to be
called the Westfield, Titusville and Pithole
Railroad Oompa i ny. The result of this move
ment, if the roads are built, will be to throw
most of the trade passing over it from Titus
ville into the.h:nds of New York parties, and
to advance, ae far as the influence of its offi
care can, the interests of Buffalo and Westfield,
in antagonism to those of Erie. it will not
be many months before our citizens awaken
to a full realization of the damage inflicted
upon our city in letting the charter of these
roads pass into the hands of outside parties,
instead of retaining them here.

where the heading involves the promise to pay
the sum annexed, the party signing is liable
to the' stamp duty required on promissory

the signing of his name should be regarded se
a mere part of a memorandum. Where the
beading of allot involves a condition on-which
the subscribers will pay the sum annexed to
their names, then each signature is held to
create an agreement, subject to a duty of five
cents. This decision applies to those who
subscribe to books sold by canvassers.
The bridge erected by the Buffalo & Erie
R. R. Co., over the deep gully near the State
line, is one of the most interesting objects in
this section. The height from the bottom of
the ravine'to the railroad track is 128 ft. The
arches and abutments are of solid masonry,
that have been coestracted for permanency,
which will defy the attrition of the elements
for ages to come.
Our citizens are probably not generally
aware that a number of young men connected
with Cook's Commercial College have for some
time past been engaged in organising s new
band. We learn that they are making good pro
gress, and bid fair to become very oncoming
performers. A publio exhibition is intended
to be given as soon as the members feel com.
petent to appear in that capacity.
The Warren Ledger reminds oil and lumber
operators that work in their line "can be got
cheaper and done in Better style at the Erie

ment in northwestern Pennsylvania. A slight
index to the magnitude of the firm may be•
seen by the fact that it employs 160 men. Mr.
H. L. White, Shipping Agent of the estab-`
lishment, is a gentleman and a business man
of the first merit., and all who may have oo
casion to deal with him will agree with us ia

suranee that it will 'be peaty med in a sada

Messrs. Chambers & Dunn, photographers,
whose advertisement appears in our columns
today, are first class artists, and pleasant,
accommodating gentlemen. They have added
to their establishment one of the patent sliding
arm chairs, which enables them to take pie
tures in something more than a dozen differ
ent positions. It le the only article of the
sort in the city, and gives them a great cd
vantage. We heartily commend them to the
patronage of our readers.
The editor of the Dispatch announces, in
Saturday morning'. paper, that his daily is no
longer an experiment, but that its patronage
is such as to ensure the permanency of its
publication: The business of the office has
increased to a wonderful extent, and it may
fairly ell im to take rank as one of the most
successful printing establishments in the
country. Mr. Lynn is emphatically a work•
ing man, and to his energy . and perseverance
may mainly be attributed the prosperity which
has attended the paper. As a member of the
Draft he has proved himself, in his dealings
with us, to be honorable and accommodating,
and while we shall seldom or never, in all
probability, agree in politics, it affords us
gratification to know that be is doing well in
a business point of view.
The Gazette denounces severely the par•

The name of the Girard Union is to be
