In all the qualities which combine to make a
virtuous, popular and honored citisan, he was
without an equal in this section. Starting in
his career at the humble but' useful occupa
tion of a keener of gentleman horses, by
perseverance, honeity and an exemplary
Christian life, he worked his way upwards to
the first place at the bar and in the affections
of his fellow citizens. He was a solditir of
great and undying merit, (witness his militia
campaign.) an orator of the finest Cloeronian
expression, a, lawyer without a stain on his
fair fame, (inquire of Judge Deriokeon,) a
citizen of the utmost sobriety and integrity
and a man positively without guile. He has
gone-he has' left us—never again to appear
in this (political) world of trouble. A victim
to the most dreadful malady that can attack
frail humanity, who can help but breathe a
sigh over hid untimely end? When he dis
covered that the fatal contagion had seized on
him so unrelentingly, he in turn tried all the
orthodox doctors that existed hereabout.
Dr. Whig gave him some encouragement only
to make his final disappointment the more
bitter. Dr. Democrat was next appealed to,
but blasted his hopes at an early stage of the
treatment, by assuring him that he could be
of no benefit. In despair he hastened to
secure the services of the new and popular
Doctor Republican, who bled and blistered
him to a surprising degree, deluded him by
false ideas of success, and on Monday last,
cruelly and remorselessly abandoned him to
his fate. " Alas, poor Yoriok." It will be

POLITICAL CONCLATR.—A political chitchat
was held in a lager beer saloon, in this city.
a few evenings agn, at which we were most
severely denounced, and if such a thing can
be done in such a manner we were f
consigned to oblivion and eternally cursed.
Messrs. Ilse— and B—, were the
principal participants. While it is beyond
our pleasure to assist these gentlemen in their
pnlitioal amhition, because we Cannot con
vinee ourself that we ought to admire them,
they ._ay find some gratification in privately
denouncing us. but we are pleased to know,
that a lo ne, the• might talk until the crack
of donm. it Would not injure us in the estima
tion of the community. Wade in, gentlemen.
—Dispatch.
It may be a consoistion to our neighbor to
know that he was not the only person who
was "severely denounced." The ()natures
came in for its full share of the evenines
compliments. 8— and Dee— were
especially foul mouthed in their 'Husk's to
the two papers and their editors ; the other
members of , the party (one of whom is not
named by 'the Dispatch) have disclaimed any
personal elluaions to ourself. The interesting
group were having a most delightful ' gossip,
wholly impart:ions that two young printers
were overhearing the whole of it. When they
became aware of the fact, the picture they
presented, as described to us, was comical
beyond the power of words to express. Part
of the company suddenly became as docile as
lambs, while B—. atrl DeC—. crimsoned
with rage, and bellowed and raved like mad
men. The moral of all which is, that when
one slanders his neighbors he must take care
nct to do it in.a saloon, or if he doe,, be sure
at least that none of their Mauls are within
hearing distance.
We think it very ungrateful in Mr. DeCamp,
that after our warm defence of him from the
ridicule of his enemies, in last week's paper;
he' should have been caught berating us.
Were he still in the land of the living, we do
not know but we might be tempted to indulge
in some rather sharp comments on his course ;
but we have too much self respect to harbor
any but motives of charity for the dead.
As for Skinner, his motives are 'too well
understood to need comment. We thought
he bad subsided, but it appears he still poe -
sesses courage enough to continue his elan
ders—when he imagines they will not come
to the ears of those ass%iled. We want noth.
lug more to do with him, but we hereby give
fair notice that if we are provoked into fur
ther self.defence, our retort will be in a m‘n
ner contrasted with which the effort of a-few
weeks ago was mere play. If James is wise,
he will hold his tongue; if not, he must take
the consequences.

upon Charles M'Henry, ore of his reli

The assault was a most saravated one.
Two teeth were knocked down the throat
of the unfortunate victim, and it is
thought that the sight of one eye is per

Stubbs for the attack was that M'Henry
was a disloyal man and said that "
