Letter from Prof. Seeger. - •
PAIDDRVILLII, Onto,,Aug. 28, '65.
ED. Onsnavas—Dear S.r :—I ' , observe" in
the Oherver of last week a very kind notice
of the Floral Concerts given by my class in
Erie, on the 17th and 18th. for which please
accept many thanks, but permit me, very
modestly, if you please, to differ with you in
regard to the tendency " and influence of
Inch exhibitions.
Your objection appears to be simply that it
"encourages young ladies to make public ex
hibitions of themselves." This may be true
in the case of one young lady among a hutt;-
dred, but my experiente teaches me that only
little girls and boys really wish to be made
conspicuous—the older members of my classes
always preferring subordinate parts, and ac
cepting the more prominent ones because they
feel an interest in the encodes of the enter
tainmact and a desire to see their teacher
remunerated. So moth for the possible evil
that may arise out of these enterprises, now
for the positire good.
Taking it for granted that the cultivation of
music refines, elevates and ennobles—that the
more we loVe it, the happier, the wiser and
better we are, we claim first for the Floral
Convention and Concerts that they awaken a
more wide spread interest in music than any
thing else. By giving the people en opportu
nity to attend such an entertaMment, and so
help pay the cost of instruction, it enables s
teacher to place the price of tuition so low
that a very_ large number may receive the
benefits who.otherwise . could not.
• 2d. The .work accomplished by the clags
during the': term is twice as great as it would
be were there to be no exhibition at the close
It it kept oonetantly before the pupils that
their psrenta and friends are coming to see
what proficiency they have made, and there
could be no strocger incentive to labor acd
activity.
Bd. It gives to many a bashful, awkward
girl and boy an ease and grace of manner
which are essential to manly and womanly
deporttoent.
And finally, it opens the way to a more ex—
tended field of acquirement for every young
lady and gentleman, boy and girl who were
member, of that class, and a desire to know
more. And they shall be accommodated.—
Last winter Erie could not raise a corporal's
guard who•were willing to attend a conven
tion proposed to be held by Prof. A. N. John.
eon, of Boston. and myself For three days
I labored faithfully and enn:d not find a dozen
persons int ere.ted—but. I am greatly mistaken
if we do not find mirth a class this winter as
will do credit to Erie and effectually remove
the stigma of " possessing the least musical
talent of any oily in the Union."
Very respectfully yours.
It. W. IMAGER.
!T C, or LOCAL INTERICST.—Mr. L. S.
Wright, of Girard, Is announced as a
candidate for County Commissioner.—The
Oil City News gives the number of oil com •
ponies in existence at 1,457, with a total
capital of $869,594,000.—0a Thursday of
last week, the Day Express over the Lake
Shore road set fire to a large pile of wood at
Morian Crossing, ant some 500 cords wore
consumed. —.l weak or two ago the steamer
Chautauqua took out a party of about 150
parsons from Dunkirk, fn a moonlighrex
cnrsion. While up th, lake a dense fig came
on and the boat ran upon a sandbar, where
she remained all night, the young folks
making the best of their stranded position
until morning, when thee were put ashore
and sent home. The beet got off during the
day.—The now celebrated town and stream
of Pithole derive their name from "an im

tain, at the foot of which the creek enters the
Allegheny. The pit has the reputation of
being of great depth, but has never been ex
plored, owing to the noxious vapor and gases
constantly arising from it. It is about twen
ty feet in diameter at the month, and a fowl
suspended in it will not live a minute, and in
fifty-one minutes will become putrid."—The
new county project, as we anticipated, is
meeting with active opposition in all the
papers published . in the looelities most di
rectly interested. The Warren Ledger, Corry
Telegraph, Warren ,]fait, Oil City Register,
Venengo Spectator, and Meadville Journal, all
contain articles in opposition to the proposed
measure. The Mel thinks the people of
Warren county will be neatly unanimous in
their desire to " remain as they are."—The
papers contain an account of a poor fellow at
Cedar Falb, lowa, who hung himself. He bad
ten wives, and had been arrested for bigamy.
The accounts do not say whether it was the
arrest or the number of wives that led to the
rash act.—Mr. Hart, of the firm of Burtis,
Hart & Co., was robbed of $l,BOO at the depot
in Titusville, on Thursday evening. It was
also reported that the proprietor of the Bush
House was assaulted and robbed on the same
evening. Titusville is daily becoming a more
pleasant locality to live in.—The Dispatch
and Gazette both favor the selection of Mr. M.
Et. Barr, as the Republican candidate for the
Legislature from this city.—The Oil Creek
railroad is now known among oil men by the
euphonious and expressive title of " Death's
Causeway."—The following cases of pocket
picking occurred in this city on Saturday last:
W. Stotts, of Waterford, robbed of $160; Mr•
Johnson, of Summit township, robbed of be.
tween $6OO and $7OO ; Mr. Appleby, of Her

$l7O, and another gentleman, whose name
and residence we did not learn, of $l,lOO
—The firemen of the city have adopted a
uniform shirt, which is to be furnished to el
the companies at the expense of the public
That of Perry Company No. 1, will be of red
flannel, with black facings and trimming,.
The shirts of the other companies will also be
of red flannel, but the members of No. 2 will
have blue trimming, and facings, and those
of the steam fire company white. The mem
bers of Perry company will wear a neat navy
cap and belt with the name of the company
upon it—the caps of the! privates to have
silver band around, and those of the officers a
gold one. Each fireman will wear • pair of
black pantaloons, which he is to furnish him
self. The uniform strikes us as rather a
pretty one, and we trust when all the comps
nies are supplied, they will- turn out in a
grand parade, so the people eta see them in
their new suits.—The circus which exhibit
ed here on Saturday, was attended by an im
mense crowd, and the canvass in the evening
was so densely crowded that hundreds failed
to gain admission. Extensive advertising is
the secret of its success. The show bills put
out previous to its arrival here were the most
attractive ever seen in our community.—
The Dispatch, referring to Mr. DeCamp's
desire to go to the Legislature, humorously
remarks that it supposed he "had concluded
to abandon the pursuit of impossibilities."

route for a railroad to connect Franklin, Pa.,
with the Philadelphia & Erie railroad, have
arrived in the former Flace, having surveyed

cuts of forty feet per mile, and maximum
curves of six degrees, For forty miles they
were on a oontinnong coal bed, the number of
workable seams from three to the, and vary
ing from twenty eight inches to eleven fest
in thickness. Balt springs also abound in
the region, and iron ore is found in abtid.

week, on the subject of our Post Office annoy
arces, have received very gsneral commenda
tion. We have no disposition to refer to the
matter in any hot a tone of kindness, and
trust the much needed improvements will 'be
secured without the necessity of any further
newspaper allusion. If an energetic effort is
made by those whose duty it is to see that
the grievances are obviated, we cannot doubt
that it will be successful. Whatever is at
tempted, we trust will be done speedily.—

call the etsple•and ring style, is getting in
vogue with the dames, while ringlets for the

The Titusville Herald is incorrect in stating

Oil Creek reilroad, • and the apparent indispo

again directed to the necessity of building the
proposed railroad from Union to Titusville.
That the needs of the oil trade imperatively
require an additional rod is beyond all ques•

immense interests centering at Tiltusville, the
business men of that place should hesitate •

small amount of stock necessary to put the
