    . The BOY• •
The 'midnight howl had gone and Fused,
Astddaylight was approaching,
As, in a bed, a little child,
In tones of music, tierce and wild,
Began to howl.
Ite brow was sad, its mouth beneath
Was filled not yet with pearly teeth,
And nary wind when blowing down
In every chimney through the town,
Could beat that howl
In dreams, the mother heard its cry
Of pain, perhaps of agony ; •
She woke And clasped it to her breast.
In hopes to lull the babe' to rest,
But still it bowled
"0! go to sleep," the father said,
" Or else I'll break your little head."
The babe did near a word reply,
But dropped hie fist into hie eye,
And then he howled.
"0! stop," the mother said; "that note
Was never meant for such a throat."
A tear stood in his bright blue eye,
And persons living in the sky
Could hear it howl.
~ You'll have to leave the house, I swear !
That horrid noise has turned my hair !"
A fellow boarder called this out,
But still the infant with a shout,
Howled only worse.
At break of day, the infant still
With right'good hearty zeal and will,
While kicking in its mother's arms,
Filled boarders' souls with strange alarms
By sundry howls.
A watchman, in the neighb'ring street,
Flew faster on with nimble feet ;
He thclught, perhaps, a robber bold
Had killed a man, but ho was sold ,
By infant howls
There in the twilight ilia_ and gray,
The psronts whipped • as it lay,
And soon the infant ceased its cries,
And closing both its little eyes.
Bank off to sleep
