Oil Strikes aud Oil Failures. •
Letter writers from the oil regions almost
invariably confine themselves to glowing des
criptions of new discoveries and new strikes
—rich oil territory and big fiowintwells. It
is seldom that the dark side of the picture is
turned to the public eye. and the failure of
wells are rarely noticed A. gentleman, who
recently made o tour of inspects 1011 through ,
the Venmngo region, dep#ted from the
Custonioand noted inite,a 'number of "pumped
out" wells. Thelollowlez extracts from tics
letter will be found interesting to our read—
The most important item! of ilews in Ail
region are, of course, the rich oil strikes mad
the failures of the sidle. The oil strikes be—
ing-boat welcome to.,the principal parties
concerned, are the items that obtain the
swiftest and widest - circulation. Tke stoppage
of wells is a matter that the unfortunate com
panies wish to have ae little said about as
possible. In keeping this kind of news
secret, they 'are very often Ince...fill, sad
the public keep on buying stock and bringing
in subscriptions, long after there- bas been
any flow of oil to warrant their investments.
Bat I have
. taken pain, to collect bad news to
1411 as good I have not been a little sur
prised to &Id so many dry wells in this re
gion ; not wells that were struck without
finding oil, but. those that bad ceased fldwing
tin the Tamen, ttynl Farm there are tour
or five wells that formerly yielded fifty bar
rels • day, and one that flowed five hundred
that have now given out. Altogether .there
are fiftetla abandoned wells on the premises.
Some of them are being tested, and perhaps
will be Nand, oil bearing again. It must not
.be supposed, however, that the company Is
not in a flourishing condition. There are still
ten producing wells on the farm, yielding up-
wards of ope hundred and fifty barrels a day.
On the widow McClintock farm there are
forty abandoned wells. The twenty wells
that are still flowing yield about two hundred
and fifty barrels daily. Very near, there are
quite a number of wells which , at one time
were exceedingly prolific, but have now fallen
off to an Inconsiderable amount. Among them
are the , Van Slyite well, one's yielding 1,200
barmier per 'day ; • the Lloyd well, 120. barrels
per day ; the • Eastman, Ocean, 'Hayes and
Meirintac, Christy, and others on this line.
Several of ,thise,'tbe Van Slyke, Lloyd and
Christy, were injsred ; by the slaking of a
contiguous well, the Hammond, which at
first flowed three hundred barrels a day.—
Afterwards, the Hammond, along with nearly
a dozen others, were, flooded. by drawing the
tubing of the Excelsior, and have since yield-;
ed very little. On the tract at the mouth of
Cherry-Tree marunning seven or eight miles
up the stream, upwards of a hundred wells
have been sunk, and with the exception of s
single one, which produces about ten burets
a day, all were -dry at the time of my visit
about four weeks since. Oa the Blood farm,
farther up, there are some twenty abandoned
wells. On the section of this farm owned by
the Ocean PeiroleUm Company, there are
twelve dry wells. The Burning well, owned
by the Maple Tree Oil Company. at one tias
Sowing 2,600 barrels per day, took Sre is
1862, sad has since yielded nothing. Ten
wells aid Oink' ineekiser, were Nosed, *ld
have sines yielded nothing.
The Brewer k Watson well dived it *se
