In the fact that conscript's In Clearfield

have a legitimate result of the teachings of
Copperhead politicians like William Bigler.
In obedience to a requisition, from Provost

been sent to that cottnty for the purpose of
suppressing tho insurrietiou• and enforcing
tho law, and we presume it will be effectually

RIDGWAY, Nov. 8, 1864., ,
- Dactr Sir: As the Republican.priss, as well
as Republican individuals, are - endeavoiing to
make pelitical - capifal out of the recent shoot
ing of the Deputy - Provost Marshal, Colonel
Butler, in Clearfield county, I deem it my duty
to give you the fasts.
Joseph Loutisbury is the name of the man
who committed the deed. Ile has been twice
drafted.- Once before he fired it Capt. Seir
nan, Deputy Provost 'Marshal, when attempt
ing to arrest." - him.- In cousequenes of this
offence. he was threatened with the, sev4est
pentilties when - taken, and his friends on isak-j
ing intercession- for himwere told
-.that his
ease was of such an aggravated cheroot/0.0.i
he could expect -no mercy as the liaads of a
court martiat, and would probably be shot if
taken. Knowing this, his contest with the
Provost Marshal was; in his View, fight for
life: His resistance was not the result of the
teachings of the "Copperheads," because he
him - self helped to elect Mr.:paean to the
Presidency, and was a consistent Republican
up to the time ho was first drafted, since which
time ho has not shown himself to public, but
has been skulking about the neighborhood of
ilia home, unassisted and unsupported in his
resistance of the draft by any squad or any
persons. I might state further that his neigh
bors declare - positively that Ile did not take,
nor was he a reader, of any Democratl: papfir
wtatever, but that he was a constant reader
of the Rafiman's Journal, which La the Ilepub -
liege paper.of Clearfield county.
Iltive the foregoing statement of facts from
citiens of - Clearfield county of - unquestionable
veracity gad respectability, and 1 give there
to ) ou witbout exaggeration or. palliation.
