'nation by the unanimous voice of the dele.
gates at Ridgway, is a compliment which will
doublers be as agreeable to him as it was well
deserved. ,
The public career of Gov. Bigler is so (a
irliner to most of our eltisens.thet It is scarcely
necessary to enter into any extended allusion
to it. He is one of the thousands of young
men in this country who have grown up by
their- own talents and indomitable energy,
from humble stations in society to a rank with
the most eminent and influential in the land.
His first office, we believe, was as a member
of the State Senate, where he acquitted.. him
self with so much ability and integrity as to
make him the acknowledged leader of that
body. The Democratiti party, seeing his ster--
Hag qualities, soon took him up as their can
didate for Governor, to which position he was
elected by a large majority, filling the Execra
tive chair of Pennsylvania, at the same period
that his brother John did that of California.
After his tertaes Governor had expired, he
was chosen by the Demoorathi members of oar
Legislature es a Representative in the United
gimes Senate, for sin years. This important
position he filled with credit to himself and
usefulness to the people, winning wide rept
teflon as a dehator and high toned, shrewd
and patriotic statesmon. His course daring
the exciting events immediately preceding the
outbreak c-f the - rebellion entitles him to the
grateflal remembrance of the country. He
labored with all his energy to avert the calam
ities of civil war, warmly advocating the
adOption -of the compromise measures, and
warning the extreme men of both section. of
tho results of their madness, and endearing
himself tof all the real Union loving members
of Commas. Me. Crittenden, speaking .to a
friend of ours about that period, need this
strikingly expressive language ; "Bigler is
"one 'of the men who can be trusted. He love.
"the Union with his whole'. soul, He has is—
"bored as hard as any :one ; to prevent the
"storm, and deserves much credit. You Penn
"sylvanians should stand by him, for be has
"stood by the Union.",
- Of course in a long life of public duties,
such. as, Gov. Bigler has performed, it could
not be expected that be would not obtain
many personal and political enemies. _ But
virulent and sostulalotut as have been the as
saults upon him by base hirelings, like the two
Forney. and others of their kind, we haviyet
to meet the first respectable charge against
his personal character. He hoe passed the
ordeal of distinguished 'station without a stain
upon his private name, and with the acknowl
edged reputation that whatever mistakes he
may have made, he always acted with an eye
to the beat interests of the State and Union.
Such is the candidate presented by the Dem
ocratic partylor the suffrages of the people
of the 19th Distrikt. His record is one of
Consistent, earnest; patriotic deviation to the
cause of the Union. If he is elected he will
carry into Congress the advantages of a ripe
experience, exalted mental attainments, and
an undying patriotism, which is limited by
no Stati lines nor sectional prejudices, but
which covers the whole country, and will la—
bor for all its interesti; He would dons hon•

bleeding and almost ruined nation. _
Col. Dan Rice for State Senator.

and after a brief session, concluded their da
ties by the amanita - one Domination of Coi.
Dan Rice, of Girard, &JAW) competitor of Mr.
Lowry for the State &late. We doubt not
that these proceedings will be endorsed by the
entire Democratic party of the distract, and
sustained by a large number of Republicans.
Col. Ries is well known to almost every man,
woman and child in the railed States, but by
none so well as those of Erie county. Re him
resided among ay. • great many years, and,
whatever May be said of him by his enemies,
we defy any one to produce a single item of
testimony, since his residues in Erie county,
which can detribit:from his character as a good
citizen, and hospitable, high-toned, and large
h i eirttyl gentleman .. His gettermeity is almost
boundges, and has earned him an inviable•
distinction in every pare of the country. That
he has native talents of a rare order will be
admitted by all who hare ever made his no
quainiance. He would enter 'the Senate, if
elected, with a praetical, experience of the
world; and a broad, comprehensive knowledge
of the wants and duties of, the people, posses.
sed by few members of that Wadi, and cer
tainly would be superior in every respect to
the preiont Senator from this "Istria. The

things have happened than the election of col.
Dan Rice to the Senate.
