it to their advantage call at the store of D.
Pierce & Co , corner of State anti Ninth Ste.,
and examine the patent Hone Hoe or Cultiva
tor Plow they have for sale. It embraces ihe
principles of the Hoe and Cultivator, and is
warranted to do the same work that either of
those instruments usually perform. - In these
days of scarcity of labor and high Priced, a
machine of this sort is almost iodiiiiensable
to farmers. Messrs. P. & Co. have also a
large stock of horse rakes and fannitig uten

Monday and Tuesday impinge next of attend
iog an exhibition that is well deserving of
their patronage. We refer -to /Mager &
Foote's exhibition, the prominent announce
ment of which, on the bulletin boards about
the city, cannot have failed to attract their
attention. It has visited many portions
of the country, And the success which has
everywhere attended it, is the best testimonial
to its deserts.
Prof 0. H. Brooks, who accompanies the
exhibition, is a blind young man whose career
entitles him to the favorable notice of all'who
honor industry; intelligence and persever
ance. Deprived of his sight et an early age,
he succeeded in collecting enough means to
attend the Philadelphia Institute for the edu•
Wiwi of the blind, where he graduated with
honors that would have done credit to most
young men in more favored circumstances.
-He has since, by his skill as a musician and
industrious habits, not only earned a good
living for himself, but aided in suppOrting a
widowed mother. His case is one of the most
striking in our experience of what can be
done by young men who try to,rnalte some—
thing of themselves, even when robbed of all
the advantages which are usually deemed neo•
essary to success. Prof. Brooks is a native
of the same town with ourself, so that we
kno* what we say; and this article is written
without any suggestion frt,m him or his agent,
but because we deem it due to his personal
and professional qualities.
SELDEtiIIARVIX
GLORIOUS INTILLIONNOS. —WO have the
pleasure of announcing to the public the
completion of a direct railroad connection be:
tween this city and Pittsburg. On Wednesday
of last week the last track was laid, in the
vicinity of New Castle necessary to complete
the connection, and at 12 o'clock of. the same
day a train of cars from Erie mat one:at that
plate from Pittsburg. The event was hailed
with great rejoicing by the railroad workmen
and citizens, and the ' Apar, of New Castle
are in raptures over the opportunity afforded
them of obtaining an outlet to the two leading
cities of Western Pennsylvania. We would
not disguise our own gratification and that of
the people of Erie over this important Tut—
tle first link in the chain of circumstances
which we all believe is destined to revive the
trade of our community, and start our city
forward with an impetus that will soon make •
it one of the most promising on the lakes.
The Erie St Pittsburg railroad has always
been a favorite enterprise of ours, and we
have looked forward to its completion with 'an
interest only equalled by those who are more
immediately interested in its prosperity. It
traverses one of the most fertile aeotions of
the State—a section which abounds in miner
al and agricultural wealth—and managed, as
it certainly- will be, in a spirit proportionate
to its importanotore cannot be mistaken •in
our anticipations of its benefits to this city
and the people living along its line.
To Wm. L. Scott, Esq., the contractor in
charge, is mainly - due the credit for the early
opening of this road. Ifs has labored with
an • indefatigable energy, and is entitled to
the praise of 'the community. The require
ments of the law demanded that the last rail
should be laid by the 26th inst., (to•day) but
he determined to be ahead of time, and, as he
usually does with everything be undertakes,
succeeded.
Some slight additions are yet to be made
to the bed of the road, and a few sta—
tion houses, water tanks, &c , are to ho
built before it iA in satisfactory running- or—
der. The managers confidently expect that
regular trains will commence about the 4th of
July.

New Voile TO 011LICITY.—.NOthe has been
given to the stockholders of the Philadelphia
and Erie railroad Company, that there will be
meeting held at the office of the company,
on the 25th inst.' to consider a resolution of
the Board of Mabagere for aiding in the im—
mediate construction of s braneh railroad to
the Penitsylvania oil region. No intimation
of the proposed mute is given, but it to most
probably on a Hua i nearly direct from Oil
Creel to Ridgway, on the Philadelphia aud
Erie rsitro.td, a ,distance of about fifty-five
miles. This would gives shorter hue to Phil.
adelAia and Nei. , York than can be attained
by any other route. AL present there is no
direct railroad communisation with the oil
piton. The_prOduct of the walls has to be
hauled over co4mon roadc wail' they reach
tutersectioos of the Philadelphia & Erie rail
road, the New tork & Erie railroad, and the
Erie & Pittsburg railroad. Most of the oil
now brought to Philadelphia oomas by way of
the Erie & Pittsburg railroad to Pittsburg.
and thence over the Pennsylvania Central
railroad. 80D11/1 is taken to station* on the
Philadelphia & Erie railroad, tar above the
direct line of travel, sod it has to go over a
circuitous and Unnecessary route. A railroad
direct to Ridgeiray would open at once a most
lucrative business, and put Philadelphia near
er to the oil region than any other Eastern
