May, their names will be stricken.of our lists
We are obliged to resort to this system by the pres
sing demands of our business, which has now
reached a stage requiring the prompt payment
of every cent that is due us. All items con
nected with the publication of the paper have
taken an enormous advance, and cost us th.,
"ready cash," or its equivalent.
If we were printing a paper for the mere ambi
tion of having a large subscription list, we
might be satisfied with letting every one who
chose to take it do so, and pay us when- he
pleased, or not at all, as is too often the care.
Experience has taught us that it is better to
have a safe and reliable patronage of 4 eightsen
or nineteen hundred prompt-paying subscribers
-than one of twieejhe number who do not care
when they settle, or whether they ever do so.
We hereby give notice that afterthis date no new
• subscriptions will be received unless they are
accompanied by the money, or are handed in by
some person whose responsibility we are 4C
quainted with. ,
We plainty foram the fi nancial storm which is
coming, and are determined to apert it if possi
ble, by bringing up our business, as nearly
as can be, to the cash system. We shall keep
this notice standing for several weeks, so that
none who find their papers discontinued, can
lay the fault on any but themselves. '

Laei 71141LD,.--Basiaess at our harbor has

NEIVS. OF THE WEEK.
A dispatch of the 17th from Calm), says
that the steamer Mina was fired into on
Tuesday night, nest. Fort Pillow, by fifty
rebels in Union uniform, supposed to have
been the rear-guard of the enemy. The
steamer swan reports that the rebel force
under Gen. Wirt Adams drove our troops
from the Big Black, a week ago, and took
several hundred prisoners. The steamer
Hope was fired into by guerrillas when 15
milts above Memphis.. The fire was re
turned, dispersing them. The steamer
Golden Giste from Memphis for Fort Pil
low, laden S: vith boat stores and private
freight, was taken possession of guer
rillas,'on the night of the 12th inst., at
Bradley's Landing, 15 miles abode Mem
phis. The boat, passengers and crew were
rifled of everything. The steamer Clister
was fired into, near Augusta,on the White
Riper, a faVv;days ago. and one man was
killed and three wounded. An affidavit
taken at Cairo declares that the Quarter
master of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry was,
while living, nailed to a board by the reb
els and thrown into the flames of a hurtl
ing building at Fort Pillow.
The repot of the Commissary General
of Prisoners accompanying the Secretary
of War's report, has just been published.
It shows that the number of Rebel officers
and men captured by us since the begin

had on hand at th 6 dat- of the report 29.-
229 afteers tititl men among whom were
1 major-general and 7 . brigadiers. There
have been; 121,937 Rebels exchanged
against 110,866 Union n., n returned. The
exchange ()liken; on botr,,,ifif:4 are compu

Since the date of the above report, there
have been less than 1.0: . 0 exchanges, and
very, few captures . on either side. The
figurts are, consequently approximately
correct.. Nto statement has been turnished
fo our Government of the ',timber of the
prisoners hbld by the Rebels,—Tribune.
Dispatche's from Gen. Sherman confirm
the stories bf Rebel barbarity at Fort Pil
low. There were five negro soldiers
buried alive; one, although wounded, was
compelled io assist in digging the pit and
was then thrown - in and covered up. Gen:
Sherman says our loss was 53 white sol
diers killed and 100 wounded, and 300
black soldiers butchered after they had
surrendered. Chalmers, the Rebel cornt
mander, told a Union facet that there
was to be no mercy for "hoine-made Yank
keel" or SOuthern Uoionistb. On Satur
day Coiigrews directed an immediate inves
tigation into the whole matter.—Tribune,
A diipateh froin , Louisville states that
on ThOrsday Col. Gallup, while falling
back to get an advantageous position, at.
tacked Lop() rebels, killing and wounding
25, ingludlng a Colonel, and capturing 50
prisoners, 1100 horses and 200 saddles
Near ISelbyville the rebel I advance .ran
into Colotel True 'a advance, which was
going', front West, Liberty to Selbyville,
and which captured six rebels and then
pressed forward to join Col: Gallup.
On Friday, a body of Rebel cavalry
made an attack on our pickets at Bristow
Station, killing.one man and
__wounding
two others of the 13th Pensylvania Reg
iment. They were driven off, after a few
shots had! been exchanged, but carried
their wounded with them. - Lieut.-Gen.
Grant had passed the spot in the car only
a few moments before the attack, and the
supposition is that the Rebels designed to
make hits a prisoner.
The statement that the draft had been
postponed until May 1 seems to have been
premature. The instructions of the Pro
rost-Marithal-General are that "credits will
be given ,for both veterans , and recruits to
ineltide the 15th inst. Be prepared to make
the draft immediately thereafter in sub
drstricts then deficient.. but not to com
mence until further orders."
The nOtorious-Rebel guerrilla Reynolds.

were captured.
