Conscripts. Clearfield 18.759 Jeffer4on 18,270 • F.'z V..rren • 19,100 It is thus seen that the differende in population in these three counties was hut a trifle in 1860. We know of no rea• son N;7113 , this relative difference should have changed since. Certainly there has been no extraordinary increase of popula tion in Clearfield. Whether Such has been the case in either of the others we are not prepared to say; but. when we con sider the fact that a railroad has been opened to Warren, and the oil trade ha. increased to a, business of yast importance in that county, we may take it for grant ed that sun has at least kept up her ratio Be this as it may, the fact that Clearfield cpunty, with a population of 441 /en than Warren county, is called upon for 92 more conscripts, at least suggests a question of fairness, If the enrollment "in the seve ral 'counties, was fairly made, how comes the discrepancy? It cannot be said that Clearfield is in arreati upon former de mand-% She Las filled her quota every time. We muct look elsewhere for the dat . renec, and we sincerely "trust that th'ose haying this matter in charge will be prepit•ed to explain this difference to the f•ntiro satisfaction of the public. Eut let us pursue this subject a step fur ther. Erie county, per last census, had a population of . 7 19,:132. She is now called upon for a con'cription of 1,379. , Clearfield, Elk, 'McKean, Forest and Cameron, as per last census, had a combi ned population of 24,431. tameron has been organized since 1860, nd we can only estimate her population, which we do at I,soo—making a total for the five counties of 25,931, or 23,501 less than Eric. Tho!,e counties are required to fur -1,1'139 conscripts : or. within 340 as as Erie, with nearly double theop ulation. (fn order to appreciate the above proper ly, i tniti9t bn remembered that Erie and Warren counties are strongly Repuplican, while Clearfield, Jefferson, Elk and Caine. von are Democratic, and McKean and Forest probably the same. The quotaes fixed is invariably one-fifth of • the num ber enrolled in the first class, so that if frauds have been perpetrated they must have been done by the enrolling officers. —ED. Osssavr.a.l Justice, Democratic and Republican. InJune 1854, says the New York World, a mob, incited by the teachings and re warded by the applause of the New York Tritune, assailed the Court House in Bos ton, to Prevent the execution of a law of the United States. This mob was resisted by the police there posted, and in the con flict which followed, one faithful defender_ of public order was barbarously murdered. Of the ringleaders of that mob, one being subsequently arrested, was pronounced by the Tribur✓. a martyr in the causeof human rights, and another now held' ahieh com mission in the national army, with greet acceptance froth the same journal. In July, 180, t mob, excited by the Tri!une's persistent contempt of the Con butution, and by its virulent efforts to degrade beyond redemption the national banner—of w_Jich it once exclaimed : . Tear down the flaunting lie, Half-mast the starry Sag; Insult no Sunny sky With hate's polluted rag !" aT?embled arround the Traits* office in S . e.:v York and attempted its demolition:. ;.,journeyman barber, charged with lead ing this mob, which failed to do anything morel thatifoi a few moments to frighten EioreCe Greeley white, has jag been con demned to a ,heavy fine and n long im prisonment. The rioters of 1854 were avowed Republicans and Republican jai tice rewarded them with honor and with office. - The rioters of 1863 were alleged to be Democrats, and Democratic justice rewar dod them with stern, impartial chastise- And so, once more.the ancient verso ii'set to fact: EIS "Some mode by villainy, and some undone ; Andthi'i ascends a scaffold, that s,ne." A lust, of rebel guerrillas, generally known as -guantrell' Band, made a dash into Lawrence, Kansas, lag week, and after murdering and wounding about 180 citizens, burned down the city. Among these killlid were the Mayor and his son, and a, number of - other prominent citi zens—all shot down in their own houses in the midst of their families. The loss in property, it is estimated, will amount to abont two millions, which will fall heavily on New York as well as Lawrence merchants. The- people of Lawrence, it appears, were wholly unprepared. for this attack, and they received no assistance from the military in'tho district until too late to avert the calamity. IMmediately after the occurrence bodies of troops were sent out iii puisuit of the guerrillas, who killed about seventy of them. The rest, about three - hundred in number, have ~escaped. A PERTINE;iT QUEITIO2I.—On the morn ing of the clay when the•Abolitigp State Convention met at Pittsburg; the Dispatch, a rampant Abolition paper, put the fol lowing pertinent question : "If A.,; G. Curtin consents to theAuse of his name before the Convention, f tt what light can he be regarded by truth men? His 'official declination of the honor has never been recalled; is his pledge' of no binding force ?" Well, he did consent, and was nomina ted. How can "truthful men" support hind proved by hip own word to be a violator of his'pledge Tun Republican papers are all engaged in publishing Gov. Curtin's speech of ac ceptance, recently delivered to a meeting of his friends and dependents at Harris burg. Would not be a good idea 'nowfor them to also publish his letter of deelina• Lion, sent into the Legislature last winter, that the people can have ,n opportu nity of seeing hosi much reliance is to be placed in bis plighted word ? Tuz article from ,tbe Pittsburg Gazelle, which we publish on our first me, ill command general attention. We re not yet , seen a Republican journal if oh denies any of its statemeats.
