Tes COMING 11111/01.—We do not believe
there will be any attempt in our community
to resist the enforcement of the draft, dis
tasteful though it will be to large numbers of
citizens. °nue*le generally recognise the
duty of obedience to law, as the only true
principle of government. If every man weno
to be given the pHvllege of obeying such sets
of congress as be likes, or disobeying those
that be dislikes, -we would soon have an end
to all law. The conscription isy be consti
tutional or it may be unconstitutienal—we be
lieve most, emphatically that it is the Istter--
but until it ham been decided illegal by the
corms of (roper authority, any attempt to re
sist it, is unwise and unlawful, and will be,
as it deserves_ to be, severely punished. This
is the long settled Democratic -theory,- and
no true member of our party will hesitate
wbere'it is his duty to stand. "The law must
be obeyed, until it has been, decided to be no
law by the courts,' said Andrew JaCkson on a
memorable occasion; but when the courts
have once decided any see of Congress to be
unconstitutional, it is tit, mizre binding than
if it had never passed." The doctrine of
Democracy in the - days of Jack4on is the
doctrine of the party to-day, and has been
from the begittaing'uf its kristenee. If there
are•aui who would be disposeT to resist the
federal officers in their lawful authority, we
say to them, fellow-citizens, du not undertake
it. Let the example. ut the, ri•cent riots in
New Fork cikbe a lesson to - you of the fate
that will follow l any such itfort.- - - The Govern
ment is strungo, and it has the power to put
down any upposltion to its authority that is
likely to arise. It mafr he that resistance
obtain a temporary advantage, but t be
assured that it cannot tie liennitnent. ots
can gain nothing by doing so, and will be
likely to sutler the must serious consequences.- ,
We speak to you in the spirit of condor, Irl
pathiziog with your- positidn, knowing your
grievances, and solicitous ter tour interests.
To be impressed into the service against one's
will we know to be bard,l but a ten times
harder fate will be likely ,to meet the med
who riotously defy the Federal officers.
We agree with the Ga:liie in suggesting
that some Means of relief should be
_adopted
for those poor men who have, families depend
ent upon thew, and can neither pay the com
mutation money, nor procure substitutes In
various rities'and town's, the authorities have
voted appropriations for this purpose, with
the full apprdbation of a large majority of
tazables. Would it not be well for our citi
zens to take the question lot.' ci;usideration,
and see whether some plan cannot be devised
to relieve the couseriptiou of a part at least
of its harshness? A •
