• JUST BILLOW ORAND
,GULF. f
We attacked this place on
the 29th of April. We had the best fight of
the Mississippi liver, or any pine in this
pates of the country—so Captain Sliiirk and
the rest of the commanders say. iiVe were
ordered to go under the batteries atone bun-'
tired yards range ; We did so and got pa d for
it; We got one shell in our midship poit for
ward—thft was- my gun. It killed five, and
wiuuded seven seriously ; one was the old
pilot. I was standing on -the side where, the
men were killed, just half a 'minute before
the shell'came in. I stepped or to help the
men to train the gun to bear on the t 7 -that
was pretty close. After we got' the ki and .
wounded out of the way, we/ commenced
fire again, and when we.had` find one mote
shot, and had commenced to loid again,' we
received another shot And broke the rammer
in the gun, and wounded two more, and I
jammed our port so that we could not open it.
Then we fired our after gun fora while, but
that would not work, for the second shot they
fired. it us came into the turret, and killed
one and wounded etz-:-among them was Mr.
Edson, an ensign: - Two shells bunted in our
engine room, and disabled our port engine.
Then we had to draw off ; we came down the
river and landed, having received 'ill shots.
Our:upper works are all torn to pieces-they
shot' all of our hog chains away, and our
stern dropped down two feet. Some of the
restlof the gun boats fared hard too, but they
seemed to direct all of their tire on us, for
they' knew our Moak points by• the ledianola.
We fought them four hours and a half, and
had to leave them not whipped. After we
were disabled, the admiral drew the Beet off
until night, anti commenced at them

without much effect; only to run the iron
