fixm, to'rtcn & 2fousfbold. Thinning Fruit Crops. We once heard a successful raiser and marketer of peaches say, that by thinning the crop to about one third or one-fourth its ordinary num ber on loaded trees,he was still able to obtain JIS many bushels as before, on account of the increased size, and to obtain tripple price. During an abundant season, his neighbor who neglected thinning found it difficult to get fiifty cents per bushel, while he sold all his r.'adily at a dollar and a-half. All trees "that overle;r, and all that have defective fruit, ei ther from the attacks of insects or otherwise, will be improved ex tensively hy the quality of their crops bv timely thinning—remembering al ways to pick off the poorest specimens and leaving the best. Even the ap. pie crop, which is cheaper and more abundant than most others, should not be neglected. If any one who doubts will remember for a moment that an overloaded tree li»3 t} te finally picked by hand, he will see the propriety of doing a part of his picking so early in the season that the portion left may be improved by the operation. Suppose, for example, that a tree has at the present moment three thou sand growing apples upon it, and that two thousand are small or scrub by, or infested by the apple worm or stung by .the curculio. if he allows these three thousand all to grow, they will crowd each other, and nono of them will be large and fine flavored. Yet if suffered to remain, they must be all finally hand picked, and care fully letdown and carried in baskets. Now, instead of this laborious process let the owner pick off two thousand poor ones, which, requiring no care to keep from bruising, may be 'lone with great rapidity. The remaining thousand which will then have a chance to swell up in size and become per fect in flavor, may po gathered when mature with far less trouble than tho original three thousand. Let tho ex pcriment be made now in season.— Country Genolenian. Fevers and Fruit. Let's have a little talk about orch ards ami gardens as life-preservers. Many farmers think they '-can't fuss about a garden" with vegetables and small fruits in ample variety, hardly about an orchard, especially beyond apple trees. So he goes onto weigh tier matters of grain, or stock, or dai ry, and eats potatoes, wheat bread, pork and salt beef all summer long; no fine variety of vegetables, no grateful berries, no luscious peaches or juicy cherries. By October, fever comes, or bowel complaint of some kind, some congestive troubles, most likely. He is laid up; work stops a month, the doctor comes, and he "drags round" all winter, and the doc tor's bill drags too. The poor wife, meanwhile, gets dyspeptic, constipa ted, has fever too, perhaps, and she "just crawls round." A Greenlander can eat candles and ■whale fat, because they produce heat In January we are up towards Green- Land—in climate. A Ilindo lives on rice, juicy fruits,|and tropical vegeta bles cooling and opening the system. In July we move toward llindostan in a heat almost tropical. Diet must change too. Have apples, pears, cherries, etc., from the orchard every day, of early and late kinds. Let there be plenty of good vegetables, raspberries etc. It takes a little time and trouble, but it's the cheapest way to pay the doctor's bill. And, bless your dear souls, these things taste good! You study what feed is good for pigs and cattle. All right, but wife and chilo" are of higher con sequence; and it's a shame if with all our greatgifts ofintclect and intuition we do not obey the divine laws in our own physical beings so well that the doctor sh'ill visit the house lesj than the horse-doctor goes to the barn. Don't fail of vegetables, ber oa and fruit. Try it. an'l yoa'll say we havn't toled half the truth— Rural New Yorker. ITEMS IN FRUIT CULTURE. —Late summer pruning of the grape vine ar rests the ripening of the fruit, and tree maturing of the wood. Over-bearing of fruit always hurts the constitution of the tree. Thin ning out favors it, and improves the fruit. Dosing the soil with manure, is bad for the fruit trees in general. A wet soil rots the roots of the trees and hurts them otheswise. Screening trees in blossoming time from the severe winds and wet, fa vors their bearing. It is of great importance. Prune grape vines eariy in the year—say after they are out of blos som.— But cut no branches then— this should be done in the fall.— ltural Nurseries. To KEEP MEAT FRESH.—AS far mers generally reside at a distance from regular meat markets, the fol«. lowing directions for keeping maat may be of use to those that try it: Cut the meat in slices ready to fry; pack it in ajar' in layers, sprinkle with salt and peper just enough to make it paliuble; place on top a thick paper or cloth, with salt half an inch thick; keep thi3 on all the while.— Meat can be kept for three weeks in the summer and the last will be as as good as the AMERICAN CITIZEN Ja-fe PrmtiafQftlee!
