Faf&er's Home.
The farmer's aim should not be
merely a mercenary one to accumu
late money far the love of money, t
boar.l it like the miser, to put out at
interest, lik* the usurer, or to«invest
it in rairoatl stock or paper cities in
the West, like the restless speculator,
but as a means of happiness and com
fort to himself and family. It should
be his ambition to create for his chil
dren a beautiful, ple.isant and li.-ippv
home, where the young tendrils of
their earliest affections may cling
with undying strength, where the
yourg spirit shall gather strength,
energy and beuuty, and Bweeti.essfor
the future, and tile memory of which
shall be a .beacon light to guide
through all the "many paths ot life.
To do this he should spare no pains,
no expense which his purse will al
low. Of course this must be the lim
it where pecuniary matters are con
cerned. But wealth cm never con.
fer happiness, and should only be re
garded as one of the inenns. There
are many little trifle# which are with
in reach of almost everybody, that
do much toward making a pleasant
and happy home. •

pays so large a dividend to the gold

Let him surround himself with the
refinements of tas-e and cultivation
and his won mind, if rough and un
cultivated, will insensibly yield to the
silent influence of his surrouudings,
and be softened and*refined bv the
atmosphere of his home. Let* him
cultivate the soil of his intellect,
with the same diligence that h« does
mother earth, and it will yield a rich
return in happiness.
If he has children, he can leave
them no richer inheritance that the
memory of a happy home, co nbincd
with the social and moral culture their
natures will receive its atmosphere of
love and peace, and sharing in it in
telk'ciual pleasures. It cannot b<-
denied that there is a sad d ficiencv
in farme'rs homes; indeed I may
truthfully say that many wealtln
farmers have no homes, and with all
their broad acres, are | o >r indeed in
all that constitutes the elements of
happiness. They may have large
houses where they resort fort .eir
meals and lodgings, where their cllil
dren grow up like young animals,
strong vigorous and healthy ; but v ilh
minds uncultivated, morals untaught,
