ual revenue, thus far in the current
fiscal year, cominuncing in the mi-I
dle of last jesr, has been somewhat
ov rtwo hundred mil ions of <!o larg
which, if kept up at the same rate,
will " like the aggregate of theyear'si
r.-ceipi» from int rnal taxation alone,
three hundred and twenty five mill
ions. and that would he one hundred
und thirteen millions wore than the
internal revenue in the previous fis
calyear, and nearly three times as
much as that of the year which en
ded with June 30, 18G4. The most
reliable estimates of the customs-re
v. nue through all parts of the coun
try place the aggregate at on" hun
dred ami eighty millions in gold foi
the whol of the current fiscal year.
This would make the total income of
the National Treasury from internal
revenue, and from duties on impo-ts
for the year ending next June, about
five hundred and seventy millions of
dodars in currency, which is over two
hundred millions ui'jre than the es
timated disbursements of the Govern
ment, and this excess over interest
and expenses could be applied to the
reduction of the public indebtedness.
The financial situation and prospects
are certainly enci u agiug. The o9i
cial calcu ation is that with the aid
of a judiciously estrblished sinking
fund the entire debt of the nation
can be paid off in a period of thirty
years.
