The Peach Blow Potato.
It is stated that the Pe:ich Blow
Potato was originated in the s old
town ofßaratago, lying on the Ilud
pon river, about the year 1850, hy a
firmer Shepherd, who
is since deceased. lie had been ex
perimenting for years produce
good iniv varieties, and though lie
was successful only in obtaining for
hfs labor tlie Peach Itlow and one
other, he was well repaid, and has
conferred a lasting benefit upon the
community. We regard it as an
excellent potato, and better than the
Mercers as they are now g^-own.
We alsc see it stated that a tvhite
Peach Blow has obtained from the
pit of the Peach Blow, which prom
ises well. ludeetl we hear that ma
ny farmers in New Jersy and a few
in this Sta'e commenced growing it
this season, and consider it superi
or to its progenitor. We shall know

Pruning Grapes.
The Bucks County Intelligencer is
cntirely mistaken in its statement
last week, that we recommend au
tumnal grape pruning. While wedo
not rbject to it a' all (and many e.\
perienced grape-growers prefer that
to any other season,) our own grnp-j- j
vines are pruned early in February.
At the begining of December tlie
fastenings arc cut and the vines ■ al
lowed to fall upon the ground tore- j
main there until pruned, to induce
low branching. We know very well, j
as we have fully tried t, that no j
pruning, or very little, will give big*|
crops of grapes—3uch as they are!
Every year, as the vines grow long-1
or and higher, until they reach th
top of a tree, or it may be the top of I
a house, or half over a garden along j
tbc fence and mon some old trel s,as
we have seen them, the fruit will g t
farther from the root, and become
smaller and smaller in size, and poor
er and poorer in quality. Such grape
growing may suit people who have
lost their palates, and who expect
fruit without labor, but nobody else

Whan a fartii is encumbered, and i

a multitude of small stones, the best j
use to )\l'ich they can be applied is
that of making double will, as 1 have
dotre. Comment with a base of
three and h If or four ieet, and * di
minish gradually to two feet at the
top; placing the outside stones firm
ly in the lines, and filling in wi-h
smaller ones. Walls of this kind are
very common in hilly and rocky coun
tries, and are very durable, and good
security against all anitr als except
bheep.
Such fences necessarily occupy
considerable soil, but the stones so
apjfropriated pay a good annual rent,,
anil besides, ore out of the way.—
Care should be had to the walls
a proper slope, as by making them
too nearly perpendicular, the outward
pressure will cause them to fall.-tfer.

FENCING. —1 consider it a great
mistake in our farmers to set the bot
tom rai' of their di ision or interior |
fences so near the ground.
The outside fences, it is true, should j
be so as to turn a pig ; but as every
farmer docs or should keep his pigs
in the pen, there is no need of the
lower rail in a fccc. There arc sev
several saved bv this plan : less tim
ber is required : as no hole is neces.
sary at the bottom of the post it can j
be left much thicker wher- it enters j
the ground, and consequently will
last longer ; less time is required for !
ma l - ing and setting the posts, and if
the fence is near a creek it w II allow
a better and clearer passage to the
water and rubbish.
In constructing a worm fence (if
your cattle are of the proper kind,)
I have found it more economical to
set the stakes in the middle or half
way along the panel thanatthe ends,
as in the usual manner. The main
advantage gained by this plan is thut
the f#nce will occupy two feet less of
ground in its width, which is quite an
• item. Some object to this plan, be
cause thep say the cattle will knock
it down by rubbing against th*? expos
ed corners ; but such is not the case

plantation and cultivation, however,
not only removed its poisonous qual
ities, but produced the delicious fruit

Thomas Lawranee writes that he
has discovert! that the sycamore or
buttonwood leaves used in the place
of hay or straw in hens' nests, not
only project the hen from lice, but,
■with white-washing' the use of the
leaves has entirely banished the ver
min from the building.

ville, named T. N. lluntley, under
twenty years of age, lost his life at

self distrust, yet persevered,and when
