The house of Mr. Jacob Shancr of Cen
ter Tp. was broken into on Sunday the
22ud nit and robbed of some sixty T)ol
lars. The particulars (is far as wo can j
learn are as follows : The family started i
for Church in the morning, when about
half a mMe on the road they met some
friends who were coming to see them, '
when all returned home it was then found i
that the house had been entered through
the Kitchen window and the money ta- j
ken from tho drawer.
On the same evening the hou«e of Mr. '
Win. Allison (a neighbor of Mr. Shanor) j
wrts entered while tho family was nt !

len. As yet no arrests have been made, '
but it ii hoped that the thief or thieves >
may be caught and brought to justice. !

A Shooting Affair.
About nine o'clock on Monday- even -
intr, n difficulty occurred between 11. Pol!;
Blinker and John Miller, both of this i
place. .Miller has a wife and family.—
Bl inker is a single man. For a long time,
it seems that the latter has been in the
habit of frequenting the house of the
former,«in his absence. A mutual at
tachment, it is said, existed between him
and Miller's wife. [This of course, re- '
suited in jealousy on the part (K Miller j
and a bad feeling towards Brinker They
met in Mr. Zimmerman's bar room ; Mild
er was talking with Mr. 'A., when Brinker :
stepping forward, asked him it' ho had
said certain things about him; Miller |
denied, some angry words ensued, when j
Brinker assaulted him piecing his band J
against his rhoiiMerjn a menacingtnanne ,
whereupon jliller discharged a revolver
at him. Drinker, however, knocked him
down and followed up His advantage.— '
The assault was continued ; they were
both down, Drinker uppermost, however,
Miller used tho pistol twice after he fell.
They were filially parted, Drinker con- 1
tinned the assault wjtil torn evay, being
evidently the strongest. After the difli-*
cutty had terminated it was ascertained
that two of tho shots had take+i .effect ;
one ball passing through the fleshy part •
of Drinkers' thigh an! another entering |
his left brcust and is supposed to be lodged
in his lung; he is certainly scriou.Jy in
jurerl. Wo hope not fatally however.

band. Sad as this occurrence is, if it

and happiness to a lung disturbed family, !
it will have accomplished some good.

Since tho murder of Dr. Parkuiau by I
Professor Webster, many years ago, we
cannot recollect of an instance of murder j
no astonishing as the present case. Mrs. i
Ottrothers—tho victim in this case—was
near neighbor 'to Mrs. Grinder. Thev 1
were intimate. Mrs. Carothers took sick,
tho other waited upon her daily, and at j
the same tiuic as it seems, was adminis- j
trriiug poison to her. The poison sc ins |
to have been putin the victuals, which i
from time to time, she prepared, and was
pcrtook of by many, upon all of whom j
was the effects of poison seen. Wc could
immagine a case where a woman, full of
malice, or uuder a
administer a dose of poison which might
prove fatal at oiict^,but how any person
poeessing a spark of souse could contin
ue, from daj today, and from week to
week, to administer 6'uall portions of
poisou, and then, in the capacity of a
friend; wait on them—nurse them, sec j
their agonies protracted through so long I
a period and that without ever sheding :
a tear is past compreheution. Yet such
is this case. For our part we confess to
bo uuable to believe that such conduct in
that of a sane being. It .is_s*'id, howev
er, that tlteru were no bigus of iusauity
about her, still we think there was a want
of tho reasoning powers however up«e
tectcd that want may have been. Cer
tainly, there has been po Hiotive that
