(Jhluattiottal Jejuni men*. Sefcool Discipline. There was a time, of which some of tis hare a very lively recolleetion, when tchool discipline was administered al most exclusively by nn appeal to the rod. To a piece of timber of rather slender proportions, was attributed the peculiar properties of subduing the vicious, con quering the rebellious, arousing the stu pid, quieting the disorderly, in short, of remedying all the ills the school room is heir to. So much importance was attaehed to a teacher's ability and skill in the use of this instrument, that he who could wield it in tho most efficient manner was the first to get a desirable situation as teach er. In time, however, this theory, belong ing as it did, to a darker age than ours, had to give way, and another, rejecting! the rod entirely, and having for its basis '■ moral suasion, took its place—a theory j which, in its practical workings showed j itself as illy adapted to the youths of j our land, as the other. However sue eessful a few teachers may have been, un-1 der peculiarly favorab'e eircunistancos, 1 believe the theory, on the win le, has, In the shape of disrespect for law and au thority, of loose, indifferent habits of half way obedience and study, wrought nn immenso amount of mischief—mi-'- chief whieh will require years of the j right kind of discipline to femcdy. A I few teachers, under favorable citcuni stauces, succeeded. Then the sweeping assertion was made, that all, and under (t )ii/ circumstances, can. Extremists were even bold to say. that "whoever was : unable to govern by moral suasion, was ' unfit for the school room." Pii'dt a heavy tide of popularity ac companied the introduction of this theo- ; ry. that teachers generally, although not i a single I'age or Xorthcnd had sanclion'- el if. were uoaVe to teui the flood. S .me were found to mourn over the past ns having been guilty of nil ati >ei >HH crime in puni-hirtg soine dear boy or girl with the rod; for now, with their mural suasions improved, they could see clearly how to manage the innocent creatures. Others whose moral perceptions were not so acute, were unable to discern that they had been guilty of any terrible fifing Yet they were generally willing to con form. in the main, to the new order of things. Practically, the theory had uni versal sway. Teachers were driven to it by a sort of moral necessity, something similar to the pressure which, at the open ing of the rebellion, caused our armies to move "onto Richmond'' before they were prepared, and a regular "Jjull Ilun disas ter" has been the csnsequeiice. Neither have teachers been qualified, nor their schools in a condition -to justify such a move. So great was the popular demand j for this theory, that teachers were made to feel, and some really acted, a- though go- ; ing through the school term without re- \ course to the rod was a paramount duty. ; t j accomplish which no sacrifice could lie too great. Rules might bo thrown over board, an inconceivable ampuntsjf impu dence, noise, confusion, aud vexation Di spirit be put up with, for the purpose of succeeding in this desirable end, and hav ing it told to the world that liny can gov ern by moral suasion! The tendency of school government, at the present time, is in the right direction i Teachers have learned by experience, and j some, at least, arc making practical use of, tlieir knowledge, that it is more important to have rules respected and order and harmony prevail in school, than to grati "y the popular taste. Notwithstanding liis, there arc still too many teachers vho fail to take a decisive stand ou the ide of true government, and wlie allow h' tiiylves to bo imposed upon in a mis erable mtnncr, when a timely aud vigor ous application of the tiwbci would pre vent it. It is, however, universally con ceded. by teachers, at least, that the rod cannot safely bo dispensed with iu our ehools. The only question now is. when under what circumstances should it be ,ed. The answer generally made. is. inly in extreme cases," which if proper ly interpreted, is true. — Leicistowe Ga «ttie. When thin hole is in part full from the vault, I conduct the waste water from the house roof during rainy weather into it, and also all the wash from the house, except soup suds, which is thrown directly on the strawberry beds anil on grape vines. This liq uid niunurc is always ready for dis tribution to growing crops and the grass plat in the season, and to the asparagus bed, pie plants, and garden generally, in winter arid early spring. My cow is kept tied in the stable. At this time i give her a bed of fu 1 - en leaves two and three times aday and clean out the well mixed manure as .often. When leaves are gone, I sub ; stituto turners' shavings from hard | wood—by ii'i means half as -rich in i nitrogen, alkalis arid the phosphates as leaves, but asgood as straw, tho' not as fo JU soluble. FALL OK A tLAYI.O.IM GARI) KX. , I have now, early in November, begun to trench my garden, that tho frosts of winter may precipitate the clods that are thrown up into ridges. This not only saves a great deal of lahor in the spring, but it also makes the soil absorptive, and of course it is warmed much earlier in the spring for being thus ridged. The manure in the intersects of the clods incorpo rates with the crumbling mass, thus anialiorating the soil, chemically and mechanically, changing the color of the clay from drab to chocolate, and capable of holding water in available suspension for the wants of the grow ing plants. Ik Marvel, in the Atlantic Month ty, says: " Fire, air and water bow down and do obeisance toman. They are analyzed and recombined. They ! are studied with insatiable curiosity ; | they receive the absorbing attention iof a lifetime; daily their secrets are wrested from them. But while these aociont elements are thus' wrought into glory and bono 1 ', the fourth sister, Earth remains a clod." I wou'd as k the eloquent Ik, if the farmer AVIIO reduces the elwing to the small cob and no collar, three bushels of ears gives two of shelled corn. I shelled five pecks of well-dried corn from the ears grown in my garden, on two rods of ; ground, from seed grown by Wright. I had no ear as large as many of his, or even as large as the ear I planted, but tho yield would have been larger had not some of the stalks blown down before the ears had filled. Next sea son I shall plant in hills, as tliea the stalks are more self-supporting. Ours is not the corn-growing climate prop er, but it is nextte it. We have moro hot, dry corn weather here than they have on the sea coast three de grees farther south.— Genesee Far iiisr. ; IHOJ.
