Senate.
Dr. St. Clair, the new Senator from the
Indiana District, was sworn in on Mon
day last, and the Senate proceeded to bu*
sinoss. The bill allowing soldiers to vote
was taken vip by a vote of 17 to 16.
By a reference to the advertisement
of J. G. & Wm. Campbell which is to be
found in another column, it will be seen,
that they have on hand and arc prepared
to furnish the Fanner's Mowing Machine.
Every Farmer that has any consideflHile
quantity of grass to cut should, without
delay, purchase one of these labor saving
Machines. Every farmer should purchase
the Hay Elevator which will enable him
to expedite his work and save a great deal
of unnecessary and hard labor. 'J'hey are
prepared to furnish other labor saving ma
chinery and farming utensils. Now is the
time for the farmer to supply himself with
whatever Machinery and utensils may be
necessary to enable him to perform his
work easily and as expeditiously as possi
ble. Remember, that labor will be scarce
and high. To forewarn is to forearm. —
Therefore, make it your business to call at'
Messrs-CampbeH'sandcxanflhetheirstock,
and if they should not happen to have on
hand, such articles as you want, they will
have an opportunity to order them \®th
out delay. Remember,' that procrastina
tion is the thief of time," and he that
procrastinates to do his duty, is not wise,
and must be the loser.
Rowdyism.
We have on two or three occasions ta- ■
ken the privilege of adverting to the fact
that the peace and quiet of our borough
has been broken by the rowdyism and I
night revelings of boys, and those who j
are of riper .years, and would feci that j
they were insulted by being called boys.
and yet, they are not decent boys, much
less have they arty right to be called gen- j
tlemen ; although they make great pre- I
tensions, and some of them would like to j
be considered as belonging to what is, by j
some, called first class society, and yet. j
they thiftksa little of thomtwJcns and have
Biwh a poor opinion of society; that they |
may be found engaged in rowdyism and
night revelings, making the air hideous !
with their worse, tli-iri Indiiiri whoop.—
Have wc any borough Ordinance or Laws |
that can be putin force for the benefit of
these gentlemen? Have we a
Council? If so, are they willing todo I
their duty? Arc the citizens ready to!
assist them in the execution of the laws? |
It is about time that this matter was at- I
tended to.in order that pence and quiet
be restored to our town. If necessary
(and who will say it is not ?) establish a ;
police force for the purpose of attending '
to boi/s, would be i/ovitg gentlemen, and j
any others who may be guilty of violating |
the laws and disturbing and interrupting j
the pcaceble and law abiding citizens, by
worse than savage serenades, ridging of '
Cow Hells, Sleigh Bells, beating of Tin
Pans, and old Drums, blowing of horns,
screaming of fifes, rattling of fid- ,
dies, accompanied by the hideous yells of
young America, jubilant from the effects ;
of Lager Beer, Ale, and old lij'e.
Will this be stopped? Let the ac- 1
tion of our citizens answer.

MKSSUS. EDITORS : you and
some of my old friends would like to hear i
from the Signal Corps of the Army of
the Potomac. lam not a correspondent '
of any paper, not having the time, but 1
will drop you a few lines to keep you post- !
ed a little in what is going on at the front.
As usual, u ttll is quiet-along the Hajii
dan." That is, on the north side of it—
it is not so much so on the other side,
that occupied by our Southern brcthern
of the Butternut persuasion. They ap
pear to have great faith in the pick and
shovel, for they are always using them. |
Before'we crossed the llapidan in No- j
vcmber last, they did a great amount of j
digging, but we went over and stayed as !
long as we wanted. Then they did a I
great deal of digging, and we came back;
then they went to work again along the !
rivpr and threw up more earthworks ; but
on the Oth of I eb., Gen. Sedwick, then
in command, started and crossed it again
without much trouble, and then came
back, having accomplished his object.-r
Since then they have went on digging
aud making the south side of the river
one continuous line of fortifications for
about filteen miles. 1 can see them evc
r - day hard at work; cold, snow, rain
nor nothing stops them. It is a good
plan for their leaders to keep them em- '
ployed, if they were idle, some of them !
alight want to desert, and come over aud
sec us.
Out 9imy is very comfortably fixed in
winter quarters, and all are enjoying
■themselves very well. There are quite a
number of ladies in the army at present,
principally the wives of officers, and oth
ers who itre not yet married, but have no
serious objection of running the risk of |
being ofEters widows. The signal offi-'
ecrs are kept on the alert this winter,
and are not allowed to lay rouad idle.—
There is a party on Cedar Mountain, fa
mous in Pope's campaign, a party en Sto-
fny Mountain, and a party on Pony Moun
tain ; all of these can sec the rebel camps
and note every movement. There is al
'■ so a party on Water Mountain near \\ ar
; | rcnton, to watch the guerrillas in the
neighborhood; also, Thornton a, Chesters
: and Thorofare gaps.
The weather hfti been very cold for the
- last five days. The ground is frozen hard
- enough to carry any load that may be put
|on it; there is no snow, only on the Blue
| Ridge. The army is increasing in num
bers aud the orgiuization is going on rap
! idly. All we want is the army filled up;
j send on the men; the enemy hive raised j
their last man ; they will meet us with a j
large force in the spring, but if we defeat
I | them once, the war will soon close; they
are now deserting pretty fast, but if they
j are defeated again, they will desert by
! the company and regiment. They dare
I 1 not let the North Carolina troops picket
i next to ours, for they will all come over
j to our side in a body, if they get a chance.
| Let the people at home keep up their spir
: its, and sustain the Government and all
! will soon be quiet, and our contract will
i be finished ; then we will all be home and
: tell you how the thing is done. In the
I mean time to your friends in the
army and let them know they are not for-
gotten. B.

| The following telegraphic dispatch from
j Washington has been published in some
; of the papers:
j "A scurrilous publication violently
j abusing President Lincoln having obtain
ied a somewhat extensive circulation
I throughout the country, by the aid of
! Congressional franks, a statement is au
thorized by several payment llepubli
i can Congressmen, been
| used, that they were ignorant of the con
tents of this pasquinade, and supposed it
to be Senator Pouicroy's circular It is
. understood that to Mr. CarroH, of Mary- 1
I land, a writer of some notoriety, belongs
j the discredit of its authorship."
Wc arc glad to learn that ''several
s prominent Republican Congressmen" have
'authorized" the "statement" to be nuid '
j "that they were ignorant of the contents j
| of this pasqijinade, and supposed it to be
| Senator lUmeroy's circular.' That was
i certainly bad enough for "several promi-
I nent Republican (.'sngressmen" to have
anything to do with. The Congressmen |
| who gave the sanction of their franks to I
I to Mr. l'onieroy's attack on President!
Lincoln have certainly lost all right to
the designation of "jiromitient Republi
i cans." They should be made to take
back seats, and their places should be fil
| led with better Republicans and morepru
' dent and patriotic partisans,
i The editor of the Toledo Blade has
• been shown, "confidentially " he says, -an i
anonymous pamphlet entitled The, Xext
l'r> dilen:ial E/ ' tion," which he was in- j
; formed "was being secrctely circulate ! in ;
Washington and perhaps at other points." j
i Subsequently he received a copy of the j
same under the frank of a member of
; Congress. This pamphlet is the 'scur
rilous publication" alluded to in the Wasli
• ington dispatch above quoted. The edi
tor of the Blade gives lull extracts from
j the pamphlet, with spicy and just com
| ments.
We arc not going to qnote fine word j
from this mildly termed "pasquinade."—- I
j We take it as a personal compliment that i
ijo "prominent Republican Congressman" J
flared to send us either a copy of "Mr.
| Carrol's" pamphlet or Senator Pemeroy's |
I circular. The pamphlet, judging from I
' j the extracts printed in the Blade , is a|
( most indecent and shamelessly partisan !
| attack on Mr. Lincoln's personal integrity, |
| his character as a man, and on his admin- I
istration of the government. It might j
i well have been written by the vilest scrib
bler in the Copperhead camp. Among \
j other things it comparer I'rcsident Lin- :
j coin unfavorably with Jefferson Davis.—
i And yet this pamphlet was shown to the i
editor of the Blaih "confidentially." an- j
! other copy of it was sent to him under j
the frank of a member of Congress, and I
j he was informed by the person who -con- |
fidently" showed him the first copy that I
j "it was being secretly circulated in Wash
ington and perhaps at other points."
We merely wish to say here that mch
opposition to Mr. Lincoln's re-nomination
as that contained in the Poineroy circular
and the "Carroll" pamphlet will signally :
fail of its object. Every publication of
this character which may be printed or
circulated, whether "confidentially." "se
erctly" under the frank of "prominent
Republican Congressmen," or otherwise,
is bound to fail of its object and to add
daily to tlje chances for a second term of
| "Honest Old Abe."
The London hub's, the rebel organ
in Europe, gives a very unkind out to the
copperheads. /'lt is said," says the Index
"that Northern Democrats arc about to
publish a national address, advocating a
j vigorous prosecution of the war, but op
| posing theunconstitutional measures of the
Administration. That is, they uphold the
cause, but object to the effect. There
uiust.be very few such people, or else the
I nited States must have more than an av
erage number of citizens who are not ca
pabl(*of the simplest process of reason
ing."

DIED t
On Tuesday, Feb. 4,1804, Mr. Robert M'Canoiess, after
a brief illness, In the 6£th year of hi? age.
Thus has been realized, In the sudden departure of our
I friend to that " bourn whence no traveller returns," the
truth so aptly expreseed in the words, " In the midst of
i life we are in death." Though far advanced in life's pil
grimage, yet. up until a few days of his doath, hia ration
al powers seemed sufficiently vigorous to carry him the
utmost bounds of human existence. But in a few days
disease accomplished its work in prostrating in the cold
embrace of death, his vigorous frame.
Mr. M'Candless was born In Ireland, and emmlgrated to
this country 44 yearß ago, *hen in th* 21st year of hia
age.
For many years he has been a consistent member of
the Lv. Luth. Church, of Prospect.
Though not educated in her faith from childhood, he
loved her most ardently, and was ever ready and willing
to contribute to her support, and to aid in her various be
nevolent operations.
Although suddenly summoned to the Spirit land, be
was not unprepared. He was fully reconciled., aud met
death realizing something of the triumphant feelings of
the Apostle when he exclaimed,
O death, where la thy sting?
0 giave, where is thy victory? w.
At her residence in Middlesex township, on the 25th of
Feb., ult., Mrs. Mary Baklr, aged 71 years, b m0., \2 days.
At the residence of his son, William, in Penn township,
on the 27th day of January ult., Mr. JoBX Doih>s, aged
Ssyeius.
The deceased was born In Ireland; emigrated to the
United States when quite young; soft led first in Cum
berland county, Pa., where he remained a short time, and
then moved to Butler county about sixty years ago. He
was therefore, among the first scttters of this county.—-
He resided on the old homestead, in Pc-nn township,
inerly Middlesex.) about fifty years. Mr. Dodds was a !
sincere christian, and a good citizen. He was a member
of the I*. P. Church, anl an acceptable and officiating
Elder of the same, 112 »r forty years.
