THE INTELLICJKNCEK,
Daxvillb, Pa.
— MOST of the mouey collected for
the poor is consumed by middle-class
officialdom.
— We won n eh what the country
needs with postal savings banks V At
Philadelphia didn't the Provident
Savings bank get over §200,000,00
of the poor peoples' money? Who
would want such prosperous business
slopped ? The fool-killer certainly
has been asleep for some years.
— THE ISTEI.LIOKNCEI: reaches
you late this week, being detained in
order to give the full annual state
ment of tlie Borough. The auditors
only looking after the correctness of
the accounts on Thursday evening.
We must congratulate Clerk Patton
on the beautiful manuscript handed
us, and his carefulness in compiling
the report, for not a single error was
found.
—ON another page we publish, for
the benefit of our readers, who were
ulways accustomed to readig it,the an
nual County Statement. This is done
purely in the interest of 0111 subscrib
ers in the rural districts who know
nothing at all of the papers selected
to circulate this report, and who arc
entitled to and look for the same,
many of the oldest and best of our
citizens reading no other county paper
— J UIM;I: HINCKI.KY is to be com
mended on his earnest effort in con
nection with the good work at the
East End Mission. The argument is
often heard that we have churches
enought in town to hold our people,
but this is a means that reaches many
that tlie church does not. Mr.
Hinckley's careful preparation of his
discourse on the regular Sunday
school lesson, is worth listening to,
and many are drawn into this place
of Godly instruction who would not
venture into a church edifice. Another
feature, commendable, is the good
music he provides by inviting talent
ed singeis and church quires. Let
the good work go ou.
— THE president needs the sympa
thy of the nation. His appointments
to office have been so corrupt, especi
ally in Indian Territory, that he grew
wroth tln> other day when a new man
appeared and said: "Is there not an
lionest republican in the district ? 1
decided to appoint one man, and no
sooner had it become known than 1
was deluged with telegrams charging
the man with everything from arson
to bastardy. lam disgusted with the
republicans of the territory." The
president seems not to realize that his
party is one of grafters and self-seek
ers, and whose patriotism is one ol
money-making. Graft is the main
impulse <>{ the republican machine
manipulators. Experience hag proven
that.
— SINCE the Fourth Ward Demo
crats have seen fit to bestow upon the
humble editor the honor of nominal
ing him lbr the responsible position of
School Director, we would say that
honor shall not be betrayed. We
will exert our influence to gain votes
from our Republican and Prohibition
friends and endeavor to hold our party
vote, and it elected will serve the pub
lie fearlessly in the advancement and
betterment, (if it be possible) of our
already good school system. .Many
thanks be to you, fellow citizens, for
your kindly feelings toward 111 c. No
effort was made for the nomination,
even being detained from attending
the primaries by a misunderstanding
iu the time they were to be held, and
realizing that this nomination came
through direct choice, we are natural
ly urged to do our best aud merit our
friends' confidence.

WHAT OUR
BOROUGH HEEDS
During an interview with J. H.
Goer,or, Presidcut of the Board of Trade
yesterday, that gentleman advanced
some very sound views concerning the
town's development and the plain du
ties of citizens whether members of :
the Board of Trade or others who have
the public welfaro at heart.
It is well enough, he says, to look
out for the business interest of the
town. But just now he declared all
citizens should give their attention to
the selection of candidates for the
spring elections, the primaries of which
will take place Friday and Saturday
night. In no other way can a town be
assisted so materially, as by selecting
right men for office. None but the best
of men—business men—men of execu
tive ability—of public spirit—men who
know how to economize without being
niggardly—should be selected as can
didates for either school director or
councilman.
Our town has started out fairly well
on the road to progress. Wo have a
paved street, but stroet improvement
is scarcely more than beguu; we have
a public sewer but the system must be
extended and intelligent action, based
011 experience, is necessary in order
that sewerage from now 011 be a source
of revenue instead of a drain on the
Borough's resources. The Borough has
a splendid electric light plant, a dem
onstrated success at present, but
whether or not its eflicaey shall be
| maintained and whether or not. it shall
I continue to effect a saving to the Bor
-1 ongli will depend wholly upon how it
is managed.
The Borough, Mr. Goeser states,was
never so much in need of able men
as in the present crisis. No citizen
from the humblest to the most influ
ential can servo his town any better
than by giving his vote at the primary
for a man qualified in all respects for
the office ho aspires to fill. And the
person selected, if he feels himself
qualified, no matter how pressing his
engagements, should* be willing to
sacrifice some of his own interests and
take up the burden of oflico. It is only
by such self sacrifice that progress in
municipal affairs is possible in any
town.
Speaking of our Board of Trade in
connection, with new industries, Mr.
Goeser stated that recent experience
lias shown that it is impossible to do
anything with small industries. The
Knitting Mills and the Silk Mill each
grew from a small beginning, but con
ditions have changed. These are the
days of big operations and competition
is such that the little ones soon goto
the wall. Thus Danville has two or
three small enterprises that, have been
unable to obtain a foothold and are
standing idle or are practically in that
state. The industries already here,
Mr. Goeser said, should be looked af
ter and should be carefully guarded by
1110 Board of Trade, as the loss of even
one of these would bo a misfortune to
the town.
Murderer Goes Insane.
I lis mind a complefo wreck, James
Salerno is pacing his steel cage in the
Lycoming county jail at Williainsport,
a raving maniac. The long confine
ment has broken down his health and
Saturday the first symptoms of mental
decay were noticed. Saturday night
Dr. Shaw, the jail physician, was call
ed, and after working with him for
several hours ho announced that the
prisoner was hopelessly insane. His
eyes wild and his entire frame shaking
violently, Salerno alternately imagines
that lie is feeding and counting chick
ens, and that some ono is in his cell
with a butcher knife, trying to get at
him. He screams with fear, crouching
in the corner of his cell, a most piti
able object.
The authorities will undoubtedly
take prompt action to have Salerno's
case passed upon by a commission, and
the date of his execution postponed.
The County Commissioners, when in
formed of the turn matters had taken,
were inclined to take action, but after
having a talk with Solicitor Strieby,
decided that it was not their duty to
do so. Mr. Strieby says that it is up
to Salerno's couusel to take the case to
t lie pardon board or the supreme court.
As Salerno's friends found it impossi
ble to raise funds for this purjjose be
fore, there is not much reason to think
that it would be done now. When Mr.
Bontley, who defended Salerno at his
trial, was asked about the matter he
said that he kuew nothing of it and
refused to talk about what might be
done.
Sheriff Hiddell said that if others
failed to take the necessary steps, ho
would do so himself, for humanity's
s:ike. Ho is convinced beyond all
doubt that the condemned man is in
sane, and lie will do everything in his
power to prevent the sentence being
carried out, at least until the matter
can be thoroughly investigated.

are pone. Ido not have any more difficulty in void

Who wo:ild be<,Tudge tho co«t of this medicine
(One dollar a bottle) for such a blessing or refuse
this of gratitude, for being perfectly cured?
And I hoj»o my writing this will induce others who
suffer from kidney or blood disorder to use.the

If you cannot, it is due to an
irritated or congested state of
the brain, which will soon de
velope into nervous prostration.
Nature demands sleep, and
it is as important as food; it
is a part of her building and
sustaining process. This period
of unconsciousness relaxes the
mental and physical strain, and
allows nature to restore ex
hausted vitality.
Dr. Miles' Nervine brings
refreshing sleep, because it
soothes the irritation and re
moves the congestion.
It is also a nerve builder; it
nourishes and strengthens ev
ery nerve in your body, and
creates energy in all the organs.
Nothing will give strength
and vitality as surely and
quickly as Dr. Miles' Nervine.
