FARM AND GARDEN. WREN TO TURN IN CLOVER.—III the re gions where green crops are turned under for manure, there is a diversity of practice. Howe plow when the crop is in its moot sue. culent state. The rule for clover is when the heads are about half turned brown.— The reason offered 14 this practice is, that the bulk of the crop is then the greatest, and it undergoes most rapid decomposition in the soil. Others do not plow in clover until late in the fall, awl after it has been well pastered. Thu reason they give for this practice arc : 1. That turning in the clover green, wakes sell sour, and has a telelcuoy to pro- duce sorrel 2. It hag a bail influence upon bUbSeglient 12311 3. In waiting until tall, you have the ad vantage of pasturing, and it the cattle nre kept upon the pasture, as they should, ev erything the field produces is returned to it. 4. More carbonaceous matter is returned to the soil; what you lose in Lops you gain in the roots of the clover, which have four or five months knger to grow. 5. Better crops follow. some of the best limners in Pennsylvania follow this method altogether. Others still wait until the following spring, and turn in the eloverju , t as it begins to grow. ; BEEN CORN I'LL/DINO AND SUCCOTASH. —(irate the green corn from twenly-four cars, to this add ono quart of milk and three eggs, one tablespoonful of sugar, half a teaspoonful of salt. This must be varied according to the age of the corn ; if the corn is old, add more milk-or take less corn. Bake in pie dishes, till of a proper consist ency. Succotash is of two kinds—green and dried corn. For the first, boil the beans first, as they need more cooking, then shave the green corn off the cob, and boil it with the beans, then season to taste with butter or cream. With dry corn, the corn must he soaked until it is thoroughly swelled out tender, and (rented as the other. To PuniFY A SINK.—In hot weather it is almost impossible to prevent sinks becoming foul, unless some mechanical preparation is used. One pound of copperas di,solved in four gallons of water, poured over a sink three or four times will completely destroy the offensive odor. As a disinfecting agent, to scatter around places affected with any unpleasant odor, nothing is better than a mixture of four parts dry ground plaster of Paris to one part of fine charcoal by weight. All sorts of glass vessels and other utensils may be effectually purified from offensive smells by rinsing them with charcoal pow der after the grosser impurities have been scoured off with sand and soap. =I VALUABLE correspondent of the Western Rural says that when he per ceives his horses inclined to rub their manes and tails, be feeds them a little oil meal, say from one to two quarts a day for a week or ten days, and at the same time makes a good brine as warm as he can hear his hand in it, and washes the scaly substance out of the mane and tails, and mixes a tablespoon ful of lard to a tablespoonful of powder, and rubs it in well about the roots of the wane and tail. To KILL BRAKEs.—The only way is to cut them often just as they are !•hoot:ng up. If you delay too long till they have grown to their full bize, this cutting will nut be ef fectual, but a frequent cutting while young will kill theta out in a year or two. Plough ing and draining would destroy them, but many of our rough pastures are not to he ploughed without great cost and trouble. On the whole, the frequent cutting while young, is the niu:t practicable way. T:►LI. Bur IiWITEAT.—The Rea,ling (iu tette says that Charles Kuser, a Seymour and Blair Democrat of Earl township, Burks county, has a stalk of buckwheat growing upon his farm, which is six feet seven inches long. Old Barks is as rich in her agricul tural products as she is great in her Demo cratic majorities. WATERMELON RIND I'IRALES.—Ped and throw in salt and water for two or three days. Then drain, and put in water and cook until soft. Add sugar, and spice. slightly, steeping them in the vinegar, hay. ing enough to cover them. A little alum, or a handful of peach leaves while cooking pill make them clear and green. SWEET POTATO PLIMINO.—Ono pound of sweet potatoes, boiled and mashad fine, or grated while hot, six eggs well beaten, lb. of sugar, the same of butter, a grated lemon rind, and nutmeg, a wine-glass of brandy; line the dish with paste. When baked, sprinkle the top with fine sugar. DRY II FOR Cow —COWS Plountitu gut a surfeit of grass, especially in wet, warm weather, when the grass is succulent and dub. This feed distends the bowels uncomfortably. An armful of dry hay once a day will servo to absorb some of this moist ure, and bock the oow in world roapoots. Pion and meal of all kinds should be kept in a cool, dry place. READING RAIL ROAD. SUMMER ARRANGEMENT Monday, August 3d, I SOS.
