PREartvuo GREEN CORN FOR WINTER..
canning of corn in families so gencr
lly fails that we cannot recommend the
trial. The next best thing to 'canned corn
is that which it properly dried. The first
essential is good corn, and the next is to dry
it carefully before it gets too old. Mrs. M.
L. Gage, of Ross county, Ohio, conouuni•
cates the following sensible ideas about pre.
paring it : "It in a wonder that so few
should have anything but field corn for table
use; and for drying there is a still greater
contrast between the common field and the
garden varieties. I have been used for
years to drying corn. Boil the green ears a
minute or two, just to harden the milk, then
cut from the cob and spread on a cloth in
the sun for two days, taking it in at night;
it will then keep anywhere. When cooked,
it is better to soak it a few hours, and boil
in the came water. In cold weather all that
is wanted tbr a week or two may be wet. It
cooks quicker and tastes better. A little
milk and flour boiled in is almost as good as
cream. I have not given up drying corn,
but fur two years past I have put some down
in salt, which gives another variety, and in
wore quickly prepared. At first I had diffi
culty in treshening it, and then it was com
paratively tasteless, but now I boil the corn
in one water a pillage or two, turn the water
off, add a few silo J potatoes, boil until they
Ire done, drain off the water, and told cream
or butter. We think this prepazation tastes
mare summer corn than the dried corn
does. To malting, I cut the green corn with
out boiling, nod pack it, alternating one pint
of corn and a small handful of salt. When
the ve , 4l i, about full, put on a cover that
will fit down to the corn, and place n tmal
reioht on it, as it mu t be kept under the
brine whkh it nial.es from its own juice. I
have fur the last two years been canning
green corn with tomatoes. I use about one.
fourth part corn, c:ii.king the two together.
I have never hi ard of but one case whore
green corn, Panned Fry itself did not
but corn and tomatoes canned together is a
perfect suece:q."
How To MEA.STIAT: HAY IN MOW S.—The
editor of the New Jersey Firmer says that
he ham raved the following rule for finding
the number of tons of hay in a given bulk !
"Take a mow of 12 or 1,1 Octin depth, and
which has been filled with hay as it was
drawn from the field, and has teen lying till
spring, and measure the length, breadth and
height in feet; multiply tliem to get the
cubical contents, For instance: the length
i 20 feet, breadth 40 reet. and height 10
feet; 20 ditto makes ROO, multiplied by
10, equal to 12,00 cubic feet, which, being
divided by 700, the number of feet that '
make a ton of 2,000 potluck will give 1$
tons 200 pounds. The top of the mow, say
about one-third, we rate at sOO feet to the
ton, the middle 700 feet, and the bottom of
the wow at 600; so the ;ado bulk would
average 700 feet, if the mow is 12 or 15 feet
deep; but if only 5 or 6 feet deep, count
800 feet for a ton, and so accordingly with
ether Lulks,''

AN experiment, made last year in Ger

three or four new ones made their appear•
