the u-e or the oost or paper, besides the
fractional profit. On one subscription
the profit would be ..u►all, but in the aunt

tor Engine House" is in course of
preparation, near Iron Street below tiaiu,
leer the Friendship Fire Company No. I. or
this town. This House will be a very eon
•venient and suitable one. Its location is
somewhat central in the town, which is quite
an object to all whom it voneerns.
Ittir WE notice that men of taste, both
young and old, go to A. J . Evans' Clothing
Emporium to get their now Fourth of July
snits. The rush ut his establishment at
this time is unprecedented. But so far he
has been able to meet the demands and
give entire satisfaction to all.
S WE again call attention to the laying
of the Corner• Stone of the State Normal
School, at Bloomsburg, to take place on the
t h inst. The Governor of the State,
Professor Wickersham, and other eminent
gentlemen will be present, and the occasion
will be one of the ino,t interesting ever wit
nessed by the people of Columbia County.
kr WE notice that fd, Bruce Coleman
is putting up in front of the house of Hon.
Wm. FlweU, in our town, the new iron fence
recently introduced. It is of the most taste
ful, as well as of the most substantial kind ;
and we understand that the price compar

is prepared to furnish this fence in any

Im another column will be found the
adrerticod joint card of H. J., and Cyrus B.
McHenry, both deelining to be candidates
for member of Assembly. This declination
is based only upon the intimate family re
lationship of the two gentlemen. In their
Card they mention another very respectable
person in connection with the nomination ;
and of their choice in this behalf, the Dem
ocracy of the county will judge. Severed
gentlemen will probably be named for the
office.
i Tux. Friendship Fire Company of
this town will hold en Ice Cream and Straw
berry Festival, in Snyder's Hall, on Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday, of this week.—
They wilralso have a grand parade on the
evening of the first and second days of the
Festival. The Brass Band of this place
has been engaged, and will execute some of
its most choice pieces on the occasion. The
citizens generally, and others, are respect
fully invited to the Festival, which will con
tinue during the three days and evenings
slice( ssively.
WUOEVER said that the Hon, Wm.
Hopkins you'd deliver an address at the
laying of the Corner-stone of the State Nor
wal Sehool, at Bloomsburg, on the 25th
inst., of course lied. The Columbian said
somebody was falsifying, and we would like
to:know the name of the villainous individual
Ivho bo greatly shocked that virtuous
sheet with so false an allegation!
We are credibly informed that the Hon.
C. L. Ward will deliver an address on that
interesting owasion.
TUE Co/um/A:au of last week says,
that the 113111 PF of Cyrus 111cilenry, and
E.. 1. McHenry will be presented for the
consideration of the Democratic County
Convention" as candidates for Representa
tive. We arc not in the habit of becoming
passionate, and in that mood, calling our
neighbors liars, as is the wont of our cotem
purary, but the cause of truth compels us
to my, that the 1131/ICS of neither of these
gentlemen will be before that Convention
for any such purpose.
Tut: Fourth of July is coining to Blooms

first Satnrclay in that month, which Net is
established beyond nil cavil. In another
column of the 14.mornAT will be found an
advertised notive of the exercises to be per
t4tued during the day. We direct special
attention to it ; besides, cordially invite all
our readers to eowe and witness the Fourth

ono of the Committees, feel as if we have
a pr rfeet right to invite eroyhmly, and
we've done it. Now we'll ace whether they
will come!

the film of ALnntT HUNTER, of Pine, ou
Thursday last, at the American House, in
this town. We understand that it was an
extremely difficult piece of surgery. The
disease had taken effect en the lower jaw,
near the mouth ; which obliged the opera

jaw. Mr. Hunter is doing well, under the
circumstances. The operation was a severe

tar Tns Commissioners appointed by
Act of Assembly to select a site for a State
Lunatic Asylum, visited our county on Fri
day last. We aro credibly informed that
tue highest degree of admiration was ex
pressed by the gentlemen composing the
Commission, of the favorable character of
the proposed location, near Bloomsburg.—
Such men as Dr. Traill Green, Dr. Reid,
Dr. Curweu, are not apt to pronounce opin
ions without due deliberation, and from all
we can gather we aro inclined to the belief
that our growing town will have one more
added to the public histitutiens with which
she is already adorned. The grounds visit
ed by the Commissioners were those of Rev.
D. J. Waller, Mr. Howell, and others, in
the MountTletsant region.
