    AGRICULTURAL
Mhaymaking,
There is anually so much gond grass
mercilessly tuanolaughtered in making it itt
to bay that it becomes the duty of every
publisher, editor and agricultural writer in
the land, happening to have a better practi
cal knowledge of hay making, to begin with
the hay season, preaching as earnestly as
they can, at every opportunity, better prin
ciples, until a radical reform in much of
our haymaking practice shall have been
at:hewed. As clover usually comes first in
the routine of haying, and the season for
putting mowers afield is close at hand ; let
us bear in Watt* the best standing con
aim of clover is when the plant itaelf is
fully developed, and the beads in full but
early bloom, before any considerable propor
tion of them have assumed the slightest
tinge of brown. Then instead of being
roasted, broiled and baked, in the scorch:
ing sun until it is as black as Japan tea, as
is to frequently the case with clover hay,
the best plan is to out after the dew is off in
the morning, cure and spread in the swath,
as much as can be done in five or six hours
of clear, drying weather, then twenty-four
hours more in small cocks, sheltering from
dew and rain, and haul in and put away
with the leaves still green, wilted but not in
the least crisped or blackened by the sun.
The other grasses are beat cut when the
stalks and foliage have attained full growth
and the seeds are entirely developed, but
still in a milky state. Like clover, they
should be cocked after a few hours' sun cur
ing, finished off in the cock, cured but not
in the least crisped, and hauled in while still
green in color, elastic and possessed of' all
the inviting aroma of " new mown hay."
If the foundation of bays and stacks are
made up well dear of the ground, affording
full and free ventilation underneath, and
then in stacking or stowing away, a layer
of clean dry straw, say six inches in depth,
is placed every two feet between the courses
of hay, there will he no danger of clover or
any other grass heating, moulding or rot
ting, though put away a great deal greener
than is the general practice, and infinitely
better hay will be the result.
Raking Early Potatoes.
Every cultivator has his own opinion up
on this subject. If potatoes can be planted
early, with sprout.; already started an inch
ur more in length, several days in time will
obviously be gained, because the sets must
always make sprouts for the young plants.
But how is it that so many find no advan
tage in planting sprouted potatoes, and pre
tbr rubbing them smooth before cutting
them? Simply because the sprouts, being
exceedingly delicate, are bruised by rough
handling, and the growing points irrecover
ably injured. These entirely fail, and new
shoots must start from the eyes. Sprouted
potatoes should therefore be bandied with
extreme care, and the points not even tubch
ed. When buried, fine earth should be
cautiously placed upon them. With this
care, from one to two weeks will be gained
by employing seed which has been sprouted
an inch or two in length.
We have adopted another mode, by which
still more time may be gained. A little
space is left in a late hotbed, trenches two
inches deep are made, and the cut pieces
are placed in these trenches aide by side in
contact, and covered slightly with earth.
By the time spring frosts are over, they
will have grown some inches and have mail,:
green leaves. They are then set out like
strawberry plants, in good mellow ground,
and hoed like either crops. Two small
trenches across the end of a hot bed will
thus 'lnrush plants enough for a hundred
hills of potatoes. Should any sharp nights
happen to occur, the young plants may be
covered in a few minutes with handfuls of
straw, a little coarse manure, or pieces of
newspaper.— Country Gentlsma/i.

Experhaeat la Wheat Culture.
A Pennsylvanis farmer, [.J. A. Gilpin,
of Winstown.] made an experiment
season, which is worthy of attention. This
consisted in stopping up every other pipe
of his drill in seeding one acre, which made
the rows twenty inches apart, while all the
rest of his crop was sown as usual, ten
inches apart. In the spring he ran a ones
horse hoe-harrow the wide sown wheat only
once, which scorned to give it a fresh start
in its' growth. At harvest, he harvested
twenty-two bushels from that acre, while
the rest of the field only yielded nine to the
acre. The season, he says was a very poor
one, and his seed was bad, but the experi
meet was very encouraging.
