A GRIMM URA L.
WILT it is Altai Potatoes Yield
Less than tension/.
A correspondent wishes to be told why
the yield of potatoem is less than formerly.
The reason is not diffieult to disouver. it
exists as a law of nature, sail:raring anion&
as well as vegetable orgaui UK These all
have excretory as well as secretory faint ions,
All throw off effete mutter, and thia mawr
id hateful to the secretory vesiick on which
vegetables depend fur their development:—
if many crops in succession, or the same
vegetable are grown, the effete 'natter in
creases in proportion to the nutritive, and
finally overcomes all efforts at successful
cultivation. The food decreases a nd the
poison increases, with every crop. if wa
fture general or special, is added to the soil,
it increases the food, but dues not neees-arily
diwinish the poisonous effete matter. One
hundred years ago potatoes were but little
cultivated, and most grounds were lett fresh
for their production. Then and long after.
wards, 400 bushels was not an extraordinary
yield. Now the increased taste for its use
and the groat augmentation of our people,
in number and ability to purchase, have
it necessary that great breadths of land
should be used for its growth. In conse
nuance of this, much of the laid have become
weakened to a degree that invites destructive
enemies to fed on its substance—to take
-advantage of its weakened organization.
Hence the rut, so called, and other ailments.
Mother earth is a good mother, but, like her
sex generally she has a taste fur validy in
outer adornment. She will change her
dress, even the most durable of her
her forests. These arc ever varying in com
position, and finally thrown off altogether
for grasses. These, again, have their round
of varieties, and in a lung mum of years
give place to other plants. Mother earth
will have her way and those of us, h , r chil
dren, who best under,tw,l her requh
will partake most largely of her buuutie..
Straw t4heitcr for Stork.
Very good and durable sheds way Le made
front straw, with a little care and pains
taking. A good thatched tool, well laid on,
of good straw, will 411441 rain and wet e q ually
well as shingles, and last nearly as long ; and
the expense is nothing compared with shin
gle
roofs.
A thatched roof may be made something
as follows: Put up the rafters as fig shed
ing, on these place ribs, which may be spit
pules, nailed one foot apart. The straw ma)
be straight. Winter rye, threshed by hand
is the best ; fasten by laying on thin split
poles, fasten to the ribs by splits of Sinllll.`,
tough bark; lay the courses thick and even,
and finish off at the top. This will make a
roof that will not leak and be wr do s able.—
Sides of buillings may be ov ore wil l grave,
and made serviceable and warm. with fink
trouble. Doors of straw may be made
strong, light sad tight Tie- wire, or nail
tog.of sound Mist., wired
straw rope &about two inches in diameter
around the long way, to cover the frame.—
Then weave a tighter round straw rope,
back and forth weaving the whole in a single
mat. The strands on each side of the frame
may be platted separately, thus forming n
mat or door of double thickness. e_,:traw
sheds can have the wallssprinkled with nonl
to prevent the cattle from puliitur out the
straw—be made quite marm and durable,
and stock provided with such, with ordinary
care, will come through the winter in very
good condition ; and the expense of keeping
is very much less than when allowed to be
exposed to pelting storms. —..VOrth Wf.t-rit

TAE AMERICAN SQUIRREL—Wads most
beautiful, active and graceful of all the fur
red denizens of our woods and plains, there
arc no less than sixty known varieties, and
the number will most probably be increased
when our Pacific, possessions are more hilly
explored. To the sportsmen east of the
Rocky Mountains the most interesting ape
cies are the gray, the fox and the pine squir
rel, called on the tide water of Maryland
end Virginia the cat squirrel. The gray
squirrel frequently migrates in vast numbers,
anti is then very destructive to the corn
crop. To such an extent did their deptivia
tions reach in the colony of Pennsylvania,
in the year 1749, as to excite the alarm of
the authorities, and a bounty of three pence
was offered for squirrel scalps; and the
colonial treasury was dopleated to the ex
tent of eight thousand pounds, and rendered
nearly bankrupt, six hundred and forty thou
sand scalps havine been paid fur in a sngle
year. In view of this great fecundity, it is
tertunate the squirrel has so many enemies,
and probably the least destructive of them
all is wan. The black snake assert& to his
nest, and at one fell swoop will destroy
a whole litter ; the rattlesnake, we are told,
will paralyze pour bunny by the glitter of
Lis eyes, and draw hint on, an unresisting
victim into the jaws of death. But the owl
is his greatest and most destructive enemy,
as towards the close of day he flits on noise
less wing through the darkening woods, and
pounces on his unsuspecting prey. The
red-tailed hawk is another of his foes, but
ho is an open enemy, and wages war meg
nanintonsly.

Honey.
Honey, it is well known, when taken fresh
from the comb is a clear yellow sirup con
taining no trace of solid sugar. Upon
straining, however, it assumes a crystaiine
appearance, and finally becomes a solid lump
of sugar. It has been found that this
change is duo to photographic action, ehrys
tr.l sing only when exposed to light. This
explanation furnishes us the reason why
beets are so careful to work in perfect dark
ness, always carefully obscuring the glass
windows which may be placed in your hives.
The young bees can feed cu the liquid honey
only, and if light were allowed access to it,
the sirup would gradually acquire a more or
less solid consistency sealing up the cells and
in all probability proving fatal to the inmate
of the hives.
risr Keep a good lookout among the bee
hive!, and be me that thorn is honey
enough stored for Waiter food.

Scrofula; or /WS Evil,
is a constitutional disease, ti corruption of the
blod, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak. and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervade% the whole body, end tr.ay band out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is Is .a
from its attacks, nor hi then ono which it may
not destroy. Tim scrofulous taint Is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, din.
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, tilfh
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, end,
above all, by the venereal Infection. What-
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the eon.

Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous mutter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This fhul cor
ruption, which genders in the Wood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous corn
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attiwks of other diseased; conv
qneutly, vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination ; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in.
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and enercisa
Such a medicine we supply in
