portion of the time, no suspicions were
aroused until Sunday, when the failure of
either pm ty to appear, taken in connection
with the remembranee that there bad been
come former scandal in relation to them,
suggested that there must be something
wrong. Accordingly, on Monday m ornin g ,
the friends of young bete entre, to this
city, anti found that on \V in:teday
hot Mr. Morrell had put up at the Troy
Home, reeestering Lie name as S. A.
Merritt, of New York, etelthat on Thursday
night he had stopped at the American.
F r om this it appears that the young holy
did not reach Troy until Friday, tarrying
here only for a short time, and leaving for
the West on the same day. During Thurs
day Mr. Merrill made one or two attempts
to borrow money, and was refused, 130
being the ruin that he desired. Whether
he finally sueceded in "raising the wind"
we did not learn, but a report received from
Utiea yesterday, states that 1w bad stopped
in that city and was again trying to borrow
money. He nrocurcd ticket on the Cen
tral Railroad from a cot: lector on the Troy
and Boston Read, with whom he was ac
quainted, telling him that he did not k'now
whether he would go to Utica or further
west, and would pay for it when he return
ed. The brother and brother-in-law of
Misslloughton were in the city this morning
and intend giving the reverend villain pur
suit and a *arm greeting when they over
take him. The young lady is but sixteen
years of age, and in addition to being one of
the most beautiful and accomplished young
ladies or North Adams, is most respectably
connected. Mr. Merrill is well known
throughout the Troy Conference as a preach
er of remarkable eloquence and power,
and has occupied some of the most impor
tant stations w:lin its limits.
