Henry Clay.Vfho in bis day was thought
to have some political knowledge and men

' I om aware that there aro pentlemen

If I had not heard
that rpiuion aviired, I should have regard-
rit it as one of the most extraordinary as
sumptions, and the most indefensible posi

So it will be seen that these two emi
r.cnt statesmen encountered each a great
mystery in the examination of the same
m! jd. Mr. Buchanan thought it a mys
t ry how any one could have doubted that
the Constitution carries slavery with it.
Mr Clay, on the other hand, regarded that
jctrlue as the most extraordinary assump

defensible position ever taken by man.
S?s.The business man who does not ad
