Fillmore, and Smith, in all lbs counties,

recent agitation of the slavery question by
answering the calumnies in the President's
message, reminds us of the ease of an
Irishman who appeared with a bruised face
before a magistrate to awegr an assault
and battery against one of his ooantry men.
"Did you do nothing to provoke the as
sault?" inquired the magistrate. "Not
the least thing in Iife,"answered the Irish
man ; "I just gave him a blow on the head
with my shillaleb, bidding him be quiet
and peaceable, and the dirty spalpeen, in
stead of miuding me, knocked me into the

rection in Harrison county, Texas, found
