Wednesday, another hickory, towering
up nearly 150 feet, with a streamer of 40
feet over a Fremont banner, was put up
by Maj. Frick, corner of 3d aud Market
streets. The first splicing (like that of

caused some delay ; but skill and perseve
rance and hard work triumphed at last, as
they must with Fremont ; and up went,
and proudly stands, we suspect a little the
tallest pole in Central Pennsylvania I
The boys have put a sightly Fremontcr i
on the hill at S. 2d St. ; and the number
oX smaller and shorter demonstrations of
the same kind through tewn, is too large
for our recital.
Three more graceful poles than those
on Market street will rarely be found. To
Lewis Palmer and the workmen at the j
Court House, many thanks are due for
their aid in elevating these heavy, green
structures. Although most or all Repub
licans, tbey cheerfully aided the Democ
rat ; and the retrard tbey received was to
find, when trying to erect the second Fre
mouter, that some of their ropes had been
eut ! thus not only causing a loss of prop
erty to an honorable aud generous man,
but endangering human life by using them
while ignorant of thetr risk. Such scouu
drclism can not be too much condemned.

The Pro-slavery men report a battle a

Missourians fled at the first charge.
Disastrous Fire.
The Mount Vernon Hotel, at Cupc
May, took Ere on Friday night of last
week, and was burned to the ground,with
all its coutcnts. It was occupied at the
time by Mr. Cain, oue of the proprietors,
and his family, consisting of himself, two
sons, two daughter" and a Iiou'ekeepcr.nll
of whom were burned to death. The
Mount Vernon is said to have been the
largest hotel in the world. It was valued
at $70,000 though it probably cost over
$100,000. The furniture in the building
was worth 8200,009.
