A Raflroail tLrongh the longest way of
the county, and its most populous portion,
would not only serve Court purpofjt admi
rably, but answer also all the business
wants of its two largest towns,(LewiLurg
and MiiSinburg,) aud be quite near the
next two largest towns (New lV.-rlin and
Hartleton.) Those towns and townships,
at the greatest distance from the rivers at
the two endi of the projected Lewisburg,
Centre & Spruce Creek Kailroa J, of course
are most in need of that connection. In
the middle of the line (Centre county,)
they have far more interest than at either
nd,(HaDtingdon or Union counties.) And
ttt the extreme p iint in our county, they
feel more deeply their want thau at the
junction itself.
Vfe say tlii, not to cxcuo any luie
varmncss or want of liberality anywhere,
bat to point out the obvious duty of those,
who are most interc!ted,n)aliiiig the great
est efforts and tho heaviest iuvestnieuts in
the work. Those who are to be most bene
fitted, in nst put forth the greatest efforts.
Thus Hartley township has really more ne
cessity for the KoaJ, and as a cuLsequcnce
hould take more stock in it, than liuffu
loo township with a higher valuation.
Limestone and West Buffaloe, with a less
valuation, would be nioro benefitted by the
P.oad than East Buffaloe- and Kelly. Mif
flicburg is at present much more in need
of the Road than Lewisburg, and espe
cially after having escaped tho Court
House tax should take more stock in
proportion to her ability.
Hartley, Limestone, MiEiulurg, and
West Buffaloe, have tlio means, and mani
festly should take the lead in this work ;
Buffaloe, Le.wisuu.rg, and Eait BuCalou
should follow close in their track; but all
parts of the county are more or less inter
ested Dry Valley aud Musscrs Valley are
interested and should lend a hand in this
propitious emergency. We should ull re
member that the prosperity of one portion
of the eonnty, benefits all portions at lust.
A railway all along our eastern bordor, and
another from the centre on that eastern
lino to the extreme Western point of the
trianglo, would leave our county better
served for Railways than any other in the
State. The former we have ; the latter
we way have, if we will it.
The Romance and the Reality.
These lovely, bracing, wouiug, moon
it evenings ah! but the girls do wish there
were sleighing wo kuuw they do, by a
dozen unmistakable signs. Last week,
seemed to promise that by this time, the
congealed prismatic rain-drops would fall
lo generously as to mantle our yet green
earth that tho keen, cold winds, from the
icy north, would set in rapid motion the
languid blood, and bring bloom to the pale
check, and brightness to the lustreless rye
and, as naturally as light follows dark
ness, that the jingling of sleigh-bells and
the free-gushing melody of joyous hearts
would be ringing out together on every
highway ; and the steady trca 1 of the
horses' feet, tho rustling, glancing, skim
ming of the rapid runners, and the sweet
est of all musie, happy human voices, would
combine in a trinity of harmony to make
hundreds forget all sorrow, and revel iu the
glories of sleigh-riding by moonlight.
Well, we have grand, clear sky, bestudded
with its myriads of jewels, among which
the calm moon smiles beuignantly down,
and a few floating clouds reflecting back
her light wo have the pure, cool air, a
luxury for the house-confined and business
pressed lungs to breathe we have tho la
dies, small and larger, willing to go ; and
lso manly youth, and mauhood not con
ventionally youthful, just as willing to ac
company them ; old sleighs, buffalo robes,
and "merry bells" could be improvised in
double quick particular meter all that's
wanting, is, the snow. They had the
article, a ' few days" at L'ellefontu ; they I

but hereabouts it is winter minus the

when he goes sleighing he wants good com

the child, tho subdued merriment of the
maiJen, the genial vivacity of the matron,
or the gentle and kindly words of the
aged mother we all want some of them
for company, or it's no sleigh-ride. And
then, there is a thousand of the details of
business,whkbaliUle snow makes smooth'

grain and other products of the earth to

to come back ta the starting point other
thousands of young people as well as old,
to whom a few hour release from the re

or sick-room cares, and participation in the
glories of an old-fashioned, cordial, ortho

would be a luxury and a treat, Eccond to

this or any other day. Let us all learn
to be patient "and to wait," and enjoy the

Ono would have supposed that the deci
sion of the location question, might Lave
put tho Star in better humor towards
maukiud in general and Lewisburg in
particular. A change of editors, would
be a good opportunity of avoiding such
big stories as that about the "5,000 qui
nine pills a day for fever patients in Lew
isburg." But it appears that is not the
case, and fur some ulterior purpose the
warfare is to be kept up. Last week's
Star, has this delectable paragraph :

We inquired at the Commission3rs office

Messrs. Kleckneu and We:demai;l
that he would be responsible for the ncc

the county a dollar, as several volunteered
to go or send, and other citizens of Lewis

pay the other expenses of tho "frolic,"
not that they fell obliged to do so, but to
show their good will in not burthcuiug

No ballots for Speaker were taken in
the HousCjSeveraof the Members -'taking
the opportunity" of "defining their posi
tions." WAsnixaTo.v, Dec.19.
Mr. Fuller, of Pennsylvania, explained
his position, opposing the further agitation
of the Slavery question. If he had been
here the last Congress, he would have op
posed all territorial legislations, but ho
would not vote for the restoration of the
Missouri line, and would admit Kansas
with cr without slavery. He would leave
that to the people.
Mr. Todd, of Pa., said, if he Lad be
fore known this, he would have suffered
his right hand to wither before voting fur
Mr. Fuller.
Sixty-sixth ballot. The lTouso pro
ceeded to ballot, which resulted as follows:

No election necessary to a choice,113.
Adjourned.
Reminiscence.
This is not the first long delay in organ
izing tho House. In December, 1349,
Congress met on the 3d of the month.
The caucus candidates for Speaker were
Robert C.Wiuthrop, Taylor Whig : How
ell Cobb, Democrat, and David Wilmot,
Free Soil. The Whig caucus refused to
swallow a rabid Pro-Slavery resolution of
fered by Robert Toombs, and that gentle
man, with Messrs Stephens of Geo., Hil.
liarl of Ala.,Cabell of Fla., and some oth
ers, backed out, and on 1st ballot voted
for Mr. Gentry of Tcnn., thus preventing
the election of Mr. Winthrop. The week
was voted away. Mr. Gentry arrived on
t o following Monday, and at once with
drew his name, and then Toombs aud
company wasted their spito ou Mr. Morc-h-ad
of Ky. Tho Democrats dropped
C jbb and took up William J. Rrown, run
ning his vote up to within two of a victory.
Rrown Lad succeeded in getting some Free
Soil votes, but the trick was cxpoecd and
he was dropped as bad timber. Subse
quently Messrs. Wintbrop aud Wilmot
withdrew their names, and a rambling
skirmish ensued, with no concentration by
any party. The next week the Whigs
and Democrats held caucuses and agreed
finally that a plurality of voles should be
deemed an election. The Toombs party
worked desperately to defeat this arrange
ment, and used up a whole day in talking
against time and niakiiig a disturbance
generally. They were at length put down,
and the members of both parties agreed
to ballot three times more, and if no choice
was made by a majority of the votes, the
person having the Lighast vote on the
fourth trial should be declared the Speak
er. The three trials were in vain, and then,
on tho sixty-fourth ballot, Howell Cobb
was chosen, having 102 votes, to 100 for
Winthrop, 8 for Wilmot, 4 for Morehcad
and 4 Coating. Rv this means the House
was organized on the 2d of December.
