"A Ftw Days." This settus to be all
the rijre at present. The Louisville Times
thus takes it off, which suits this section
exceedingly well :

out a few days ; high fellows sing a few
days ; and we expect to give our readers
some interesting local ucas in a few days."

know they will, for some of them have
Ixen promising to "do that little thing"
every few days, for a year or two; we ex
pect, then, to be "in funds" iu a few days.

The following is the translation of an
advertisement ia Ilindoostance, ot idols
for sale of Birmingham manufaclure :

A German peasant, new enlisted in the
army, had scarcely arrived at the regiment
when he was sent with others upon a skir
mishing party; approaching a wood in
which a party of the enemy were posted,
who immediately fire 1 upon the Germans,
and while the musket balls were flying
very thick, the honest peasant stopped out
of the ranks, making a sign to the coming
enemy to desist, at the same time bawled
out "Why, what the d 1 are you firing
f r, don't you see there are people a corn-

Two rich young sprigs cf Cincinnati re
cently fought a duel. They fired three
times without effect, when one of the sec
onds stepped forward and declared be was
engaged to the yonng lady about whom
the principals wero fighting. This an
nouncement put a new fuce upon affairs.
All parties professed themselves satisfied,
and the belligerents retired from a blood
less field.
An Irishman and a Frenchman were to
Le hanged together. The latter was
strongly affected by his situation, whils
Taddy took it very easy, and told his com
panion to keep up his pluck, for it was
nothing at all to be hanged. "Ah," repli
ed the Frenchman, "zare be one grando
difference between you and mc, for ze

A printer down South offers to sell bis
whole establishment for a clean shirt and
a meal of victuals. He has lived on pro

ants and ethers in want of a secure means oi
preserving their books, papers Ac. from fire,
as the one we purchased from you about seven
months since has preserved our books, papers
and cash in as good a condition as ihey were
when put into it, before the great fire of this
morning, which destroyed the entire block of
buildings corner of Chestnut and r ifth streets.
The above safe was in use in our office, on
the second floor of our building, from which
place it fell into the cellar, and remained there
until the fire was out. The Safe was then re
moved and opened in the presence of at least
1000 persons, who witnessed the pood condi
tion of its contents. Will you please have
the Safe and Locks repaired, as we intend to
put it in use again, having perfect confidence
in its fire-proof qualities.

The University
IN this place will open its 17th Semi
Annual Session on the 4th of OCT. next.
The Faculty is full and experienced, the Dum
ber nf Students so large as to secure emulation
and mutual benefit, and of such an ace as to
render any pranks or violations of decorum
unpopular and distasteful. The number last
session was lli-t.
As the whole of the classes commence new
studies next term, it is eminently the best time
for new students to enter. In the College and
Academy together, not less than twenty-five
recitations occur daily, giving young men who"
contemplate but a brief stay ia the Institution
an extcntire choice of subjects and enabling
them to pnrsue branches suitable lo their pre
vious attainments.
