Through thy clear spaces. Lord, of old
Formless and void the dead earth rolled ;
Deaf to thy heaven's sweet music, blind
To tby great lights which round it shined;
No sound, no ray, no warmth, no breath
A dumb despair, a waudering death!
To that dark weltering horror cams
Thy spirit like a subtle flame
A breath of life electrical.
Awakening and transforming all.
Till beat and thrilled in every part
The pulses of a throbbing heart.
Then knew their bounds the land and sea,
Then smiled the bloom of uiead and tree.
From dust to flower, from motb to man,
The quick creative impulse ran.
And earth with life of thine endued
Wai in thy holy eyesight good.
As lost and dark, as dead and cold
And formless as that earth of old.
And wandering waste of storm and night
Mid spheres of song and rea ms of Itghl,
A blot upon thy holy sky,
Untouched, unwanned of thee, am I !
O.Thou who movest on the deep
Of spirits, wake my own from sleep ;
Its darkness light, its coldness warm,
The lost redeem, the ill transform.
That flower and fruit henceforth may be
Its grateful offering most for thee!
Thb North Side of Sebastoi'ol At
the latest a J vices the Allies were Dot in
possession of the North side of Scbastopol,
where the fort ideations are of great at rcngt h
and command, on account of their eleva
ted position, the opposite shore. An Amer
ican, who is serving as an officer of the
medical staff in the Russian army, gives
the following description cf the forts on
the f jrth side of the Bay :
On the North side of the bay is also
succession of hills, some of which are
very high, and running in every direction.
These bastions and redoubts extend up the
bay for a mile or so from the city, and
some of them are very effective, pouriDg
nearly a continual stream of balls across
the bay into the enemy's battery which is
nearest the bay. I think it very doubtful
whether the French would be able to hold
this city for any length of time if they
could get possession cf it, from the fact
that the hills on the north side are taller
than those on the south, and the city and
the batteries on them, I think, would force
them to leave it. In the main, thev have
been attempting this from the land on the
south side. I will finish this by saying
that it is the best fortified place I ever saw.
There is not hill or a mound where a
cannon could be placed with advantage
but yon can Cud them."
Mr. Purple, a member of the Nebraska
Legislature, informed a gentleman at Chi
cago, a short time since, something how
members are gotten up in Nebraska. He
said : " Cummingo, the Secretary, said to
me one morning, ' Purple, we want a mem
ber from Durt county. So I harnessed
np and took nino fellows with me, and we
started for the woods, and when we tho't
we bad got about far enough fur Durt
county, we unpacked our ballot box and
bcld an election, canvassed the vote, and
it was astonishing to observe how great
was the unanimity at the first election
ever held in Durt couuty. Purple had
every tote! So Purple was declared duly
elected, and here I am.' "
Notaries Public, s U. S. Commissi

Chap. 159, Sec. 2. Be it further enact
ed, that Notaries Public be and are hereby
authorit'd t j take depositions, and to do
such other acts in relation to evidence to
be osed in the Courts of the United States,
in the same manner and with the same
effect as commissioners to take acknow

There are ten Notaries Public to one

Silver Coin. A year or two ago, sil
ver commanded a high premium, and it
could scarcely be obtained at all fur pur
poses of change in retail business dealings.
Now however, there appears to be more in
the country than is wanted. In New York,
silver is in great super-abundance, new
issues as well as old. It can be furnished
in large amounts at par, but the New York
Banks will not receive it on deposit, and it
cannot be sold to a large' exteut better
than one and a half per cent, discount.
The Way of the Transgressor. A
young and well e Jucnted Kugliohtuan, nam
ed Win. II. Robinson, who succumbed to
the blandishments of a New York Cypri
an, has just been sentenced to a second
term at Sing Sing Prison, for forgery. To
support a vile woman, he forged three
notes. His wife and child abaudoned for
a lewd wicked companion, were in Court
to witness his condemnation.
A Legal Murder. A correspondent
. of the New Orleans (La.) Delta states that
on Friday 24th August, the boy Frank
was banged for the murder of the Rev. J.
J. WeetiH, at Alexandria, La. The day
before the execution, some gentleman went
to his cell to tell him he would be hanged
on the morrow and found him playing
marbles in his cell. He is said to have
been only ten years old.
We observe that an "organ" is to be
consecrated in Berks couuty. The Tremont
Temple church, Boston, praise Go! by
steam power. We .hall expect to hear
next of "baptizing" fiddlcstrings. All this
among Protestants, who profess great an
tipathy to scarlet women.
