Editors: Passing through ihe Bnr ouch of Mifflinburg the other day, I was there Informed that on Saturday last (S2d inst.) tw c-rtain men (rom Lewisburg passed through t at place, and circulated a report that I had withdrawn from Ihe field, and was no more a candidate for the office or Associate Judge 5 and at the same time did banter, and oner to bet large sums of money on the result of the coming election, all fur the purpose of influ- encing voters aguinst me. I therefore hereby inform my friends, that said report is not true, as I have never authorized any person to re port any such thing ; and my intention has all along been, and is yet (if I am spared) to go iuto the election ; and I would yet say that I shall be thankful to all who can support mej and against al! those who cannot support me, I shall not harbor any animosity or ill feel ings in my breast. JOHN SCHRACK. East Buflaloe Sept. 26, 1655. Questioning Candidates. It is rather late in the canvass, and we doubt the propriety of mixing up the County Seat with all or any other question before the public. ''What is the besteitc for County Scat ?" is one question ; and "Which is the best man for Judge ?" or "for Sheriff Via another. Let each ques tion be decided upon its own merits "let every tub stand on its own bottom'' is our motto. As however, we have been re quested, we waive our own convictions of policy, and insert the following interroga tories, hoping the several candidates ad dressed will, if they feel inclined, transmit to us their answers rby Tuesday even Wig next.t To Mtsm. Darnel IK Guldm L. F. Albright. Gentlemen s As you are both candidates for the office of Sheriff of L'nion county, and as there appears to be a misunderstanding in the public mind as regards your tore and t'n Jlurna on the question of llie County Seat, we request you to make known thronch the Chronicle," how your votes and iulluence will co on this question. Sept. 34, 1855. MANY VOTERS. To John Schradt, Mn V. Barber, and Philip Hulil. Enquire. Ton being are all candidates for the office of Judge of our county, ana it is orgen ugainsi you in some quarters that you are advocating one place for the seat of justice, and others assert lhat you ate for the other place. We therefore ask you to come out over your own name, in the next papers, and state whether you will vote for Mirflinburg or for Lewisburg for county Seat, and much oblige. MANY. To John V. The example being thus set, we desire to ask you how much you paid a certain distil ler near Mililiiiburg for liquor used in gain inc voo votes in 1853 ! How many liqnor tellers received your money, from yourself or friends in that campaign ! Mow many inn keepers have you told, the present year, that if you were elected and any&orfy had a license thry shnuid have it 1 Is not the secret order to which ynu belong, zealously, engaged in promoting .your election 1 These things are changed against yon. If not true, please employ ihe columns of the CWt-'cc to deny ihem. Your refusal to re ply, will be taken as a confession of the char ge,, i HONESTY. John Schrack. Foiled in all attempts to coax, drive or abuse this geutlcuian from the field as a candidate for Associate Judge, bis oppo nents last week got up another candidate Philip Ruhl and now :omc with a long face to Mr. Schrack and tell him lie must make way for John Jiarber, or Col. Ruhl will get the Division law repealed, it fleeted, and disapprove any building Lewisburg might erect, with other alarms equally false or ridi culous. All this, however, is -Love's Labor Lost." Barber's backers knew before getting him on the course that he was not the people's choice at first, and is daily becoming less so. They find also that Schrack has the entire I confidence of the people of every party or sect. Anil their last, rtcsperale ellorl, inis weeir, to manage him off, has proved a failure. ( It is true Mr. . The citizens f that town, know well its pecuniary value. And whea in danger of losing it by Division, they would have offered if the profits were such that they could afford it 5,000 or eiO.OOOj to renew the County Buildings, that they might rclaiu that advantage. If thry had done so, no dunbt they wnald have kept tho Seat for sonic years to come. That they did not even rff-r such a bonus, shows their opinion of the profits of county busi ness. Now, the question for the Mifflinburgers is, Will Hiy ym to expend ? 15,000 to -0,000 for ouly half of tho patronage which New Berlin had? We ask the men of ordinary means who havo signed small or large sums, W ill it oy f Re member, there is no hope cf any more ter ritory being added to Union county if yon succeed. Will it pay to expend the money you propose for half a run of custom to retain which New Berlin would not offer a Dollar? Think of it! Rut, " Will it pay in Lewisburg ?" some one may ask. Well, we think it may, for then wc feci sure of a fine slice being add ed across the river, with a probable addi tion over White Deer mountain. In that case, we could ppare Union, Jackson and New Berlin to Snyder county, if they de sired to go, and there should be three good sized and well shaped counties left. Adu 10,000 to our population, and we could live. The subscriptions to Ihe Lewisburg bond are all comparatively small, and could be paid without any trouble or ta king any amount from ordinary business. Besides, Lewisburg has sonic pride and taste for building, and would pay that or a larger sum to beautify their town, and will be paid that way if not in money profits. The "Star" nnder a Cloud. The Editor of the Mifflinburg Star stat es that the bit against the Sprite Creek Road, noticed in our paper Eomo weeks ago, arose in consequence of his supposing not knowing intimately our internal po litics that that was the Road for which Bonds were desired ; and that, as soon as his error was pointed out to him, it was corrected. This is his reply, which we give from memory, and believe to be correct If he had suppressed the sheets containing the error, or explained it in his next paper, it would have looked much more consistent, but he did neither, and left the matter just as wc published it. But the thought arises, How did the Editor tupjnse the Spruce Creek was to be denounced and the people warned against it as a Lewisburg movement ? The infer ence plainly is, that he had heard it treat ed in the very manner he treated it, and, as children sometimes innocently reveal family secrets, so he in his simplicity on ly published what ho supposed to be Mif flinburg sentiment. The Editor also lakes in high dudgeon our charge that he gave no notice of the Whig meeting in Lewisburg, but noticed the Democratic meeting in New Berlin, lie does not deny the fact, tut gives the lame and awkward excuse that somebody had told him something about our meet ing which caused him to suppress a pre pared notice. The account scot liiin was every word true, and the reproach of some local or political enemy should not swerve a central journal. lie half denies that be had published a Democratic paper in York. Our inform ant slates that the JLinortr Gazelle at Hanover. York Co., 1'a., was a Demo- cratic paper, puUisbcd J Gutelius & Swarti, but a very few jears ago, and he undernlauos the Mr. Gutelius named 111 the Rev. Samuel Gutelius now of the the Kcv. Samuel Gutelius now of the Star, llocs the Editor deny that ? The inference 3f the Star, that vre wish to cut oflT Lis bread and butter, was alto gether unfounded. We wish him and his the beet of white bread, buttered on I both side, but we also wish him to serve I his old Whig patrons as well as his Dem ocratic patrons. We have the best of rea sons for desiring Printers and Preachers to lire on the fat of the land, and have good big lists of snberibers. Finally, the Shir won't notice the Chronicle any more. Well, several ef your predecessors came to the same con clusion ; but that never destroyed the Chnmide, nor the causes it has advocated. If after assailing ns two or three weeks before we replied if after charging upon us gross errors which have all been re turned upon ynu with interest if after all this you think it best to quit the field, we can ouly say we admire your discretion much more than your valor. We learn by an express jost arrived at Independence, that a battle took place on the 3d inst., near the North Fork of the Platte River, be tween Gen. Harney's command and a large party of Sioux Indians. The contest last ed several hours, the Indians fighting fu riously, but were finally completely rout ed, with a loss of eighty killed and fifty men and women taken prisoners. Gen. Harney lost six killed and six wounded. The Indians are the same party that mas sacred Major G rattan's command, and murdered the mail party. The way-bill of the mail was found in their possession. The U. S. troops numbered about 40 men. The infantry were commanded by Major Cady, and the dragoons, mounted infantry and artillery, by Col. Cook. The battle commenced early in tho morning, and after tho Indians were routed, a run ning fight of some ten miles followed, dur ing which the Indians made a stand, and fought with much gallantry. The Indian women fought furiously. No officer was killed. Baltimore, Sept. 26. The boat from Norfolk brings us the gratifying intelli gence of an improvement in the health of Norfolk and Portsmouth. Yesterday there were only two new cases and four deaths at Portsmouth. At Norfolk there wore thirty deaths and twelve now cases. Dr. Rizer is not dead but very ill.
